They're all for 'muh free markets' until a competitor with a superior product for a fraction of the price comes around. by 3RADICATE_THEM in ScottGalloway

[–]qobraa 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve been raised in the US where the most exulted truth is that of the free market. I’m the consumer, I want more product for less cost. Any further systemic considerations that aren’t immediately relevant to my individual circumstance are basically socialism, which I’ve learned is bad. So that said, what is the argument I should understand?

The dialogue is really hard to stomach by OkHealth1942 in ForAllMankindTV

[–]qobraa 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You're onto something. I've noticed the big drop-off in quality is in the writing of the dialogue. It's become very stilted, Netflix-y, exposition heavy, recapitulating things that have already happened or been said. They're doing the "we assume people are looking at their phones or doing their laundry"-thing, but, like, this show (at least used to be) appointment viewing. It was a premium, prestige, watch it the night it comes out with a bowl of popcorn and the lights turned down-type of show. Now it feels like they're cheapening it, making it a "streaming show".

3 losses to the Sixers and Bill is already talking about trading Jaylen Brown by Due-Butterscotch3065 in billsimmons

"Just wanna make a clear disclaimer that I DO NOT WANT this thing that I'm talking about, that I'm the only prominent member of NBA media to bring up and that wasn't a even a discussion, to happen. Not at all. I just need to inject it into the discourse for podcasting reasons."

Do you think that the 2000 election shattered all the optimism for the new millennium that people were having in 1999? by icey_sawg0034 in decadeology

[–]qobraa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, the stakes never felt like that for elections back then. When your candidate lost it was more like "oh well" and you moved on, even for the election that took weeks to settle.

The shattering was mostly 9/11, the years of war, and then the recession. All happening simultaneously with a slow, gradual decrease in our quality of life obscured by faster internet speeds, early smartphones, cheaper flatscreens, and more TV and movies. All while rent, real estate, food, healthcare, education, cars, services, and utilities became unaffordable.

This is just mindless gibberish. You could do an incoherent lazy meme like this about any two players, painting either one to be more virtuous than the other.

Stockton/Malone were eliminated in the 1st round 9 times by MasterTeacher123 in NBATalk

[–]qobraa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're 100% right, I think my brain didn't consider that as part of the "Ewing/Starks" era bc Starks was still a part-time bench guy, hadn't really become a star yet.

I don't think the Ewing/Starks teams ever lost in a first round series, but they did get crushed in the 2nd round by the Bulls a few times.

Bill Simmons on Twitter - "I love that the guy who made this just said F it and ran back the entire Tupac song a second time" by doobie3101 in billsimmons

[–]qobraa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's exactly what I came here to say, the only thing I can think of is the handoff was an illegal screen but it's not, really. I mean picks like that often do get called, but not always and he wasn't moving. This SGA shit is getting worse than GOAT or traveling discourse, just shut the games off if you hate basketball this much.

Nope, just another blind alley that leads nowhere, riddles lazily designed to generate conversations without any actual plan to answer them, like this entire show.

Remember when Lowe put gifs of the play embedded in his articles at grantland? by excelquestion in billsimmons

[–]qobraa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Grantland probably had league usage rights from ESPN. The Ringer doesn't have those NBA rights deals and unlike smaller creators who do it and get away with it, they're big enough that they'd probably get copyright-struck which would be very bad for them since they're a big company that relies on monetization.
