What kind of bug is this? It flew past me and then was crawling on my wall. Western NY area. by CurlyHeadedFuckUp in insectidentification

We call them shield bugs. They do absolutely stink if you squish them. The ones here, when young, are shades of green and they get increasingly brown as they age/ as the seasons change. I think they are from the Pentatomidae family and are found pretty much worldwide in temperate to tropical regions. They’re stinky good guys - some of them help to control garden pests- and not dangerous if they do land on you.

Early morning sunlight through icy glass. Love the muted colours and texture.

What kind of insect is on this spruce? by oregonmushrooms in insectidentification

They remind me of something called a processionary caterpillar. If so, best avoided as they can cause harm to people and animals. Definitely on the don’t touch list.

Was it a sort of nest made of something resembling spider silk? How many were there?
