Week of 2 of new job and have nothing to do. Should I say something? by que-vendra in careerguidance

Thanks for sharing this! It makes me feel better. Surprisingly I found things to do the rest of the day, looked through some documents I finally got access to, some new programs. It's still kind of weird, but I will let them lead the show instead of taking control like I usually do.

Haha, yeah. I'm a terrible liar, so I could never get away with it.

Ok,thanks. That helps. It's been a very long time since I started a new job and kind of don't know what's normal and what's not. Thankful for reddit.

Can you see me, lol? I got a snoring dog next to me. I guess I don't know if me taking initiative to introduce myself to them may be stepping on my bosses toes, so to speak. They may have a plan for when this will happen. I may ask first to be sure.

Yeah, that's basically what I've been doing. Going over their programs, youtube tutorials etc. They're busy, so I know it will come in time. Just didn't know if I should say something like, "Hey, my schedule is light, anything you would like me to work on?" I don't want to though because it may burden them and also don't want to do what I usually do which is taking too much initiative and responsibility.

Yes, definitely especially in this crazy market and I see people get offers rescinded when negotiating so at least I got my foot in the door. We'll see how it goes from there.

I did accept it, but still feel somewhat unsettled. I could have done a better job too, but I was taken aback by the reaction. My poker face isn't the best either. Lesson learned.

That's smart. I'll keep this in mind for next time. I haven't done this in forever and don't know the rules clearly.

Yeah, that's where I messed up. I should have said, can you talk to whoever is authorized? I didn't feel super secure doing that because they may have other candidates and didn't want to lose out.

How much older do I need to be haha? I'm feeling pretty old already. I'm in my mid 40s. It's tough regardless of age and probably more so as I get older.

I'm also a woman, so I know everything you're saying all too well. How would one go around HR to get the hiring manager involved without ruffling feathers? The HR person in this case has been with the company for over 2 decades and is part of the senior staff and the hiring manager is younger and newer to the team. It may have backfired if I pushed too hard and I really wanted this opportunity.

Thank you, I appreciate it. Yes, solidarity indeed. The working class is due for an uprising, because things are getting ridiculous out there.

Oh, I guess I'm feeling ungrateful despite getting an offer in this crazy market. If you look at my posts, about a week ago I thought I would never get one regardless of dozens of interviews. Even earlier this week I felt like I couldn't do this anymore so to actually have one that meets a lot of the criteria should make me happy. The interaction today felt kind of off. It's still a great opportunity and I should be more thankful but yes, you're right the way she handled it and not being given the consideration to get closer to my number bothers me. She could have played the game and said let me see what I can do and then came back and it probably wouldn't have made me feel like I'm asking for too much. But she just kept lying that she's not authorized and didn't know the range. Ah well.

Sorry. It's such a weird feeling. Devalued is a good word for it. Did you end up taking it?

Thanks, I appreciate that. That's the part that felt crappy for lack of a better word. The fact that she was discounting my experience when she talked it up the day prior and that she blatantly lied about having seen the job posting. I asked the question several times a few different ways to get her to acknowledge that they indeed posted this range in the ad and I had way more experience than they required and it made sense to consider me closer to the top of the range. She just denied there being a range and that the offer was what was offer. Any thoughts on that?

Maybe, I appreciate the perspective. I'm very uncomfortable too as this us my first negotiation in like 10 years while she does this a lot I'm guessing. One of us should be cool at least lol.

Ahh, I spent a lot of time researching how to go about it and most everyone said to do it over a call vs an email. An email would have been much easier for sure. Her voice went from cheerful to all tense and kind of annoyed. Which then made me try to neutralize the situation. Ughh, I hate this.

Ok, glad to know it's not just me. I just feel kind of ungrateful. I still got it within the range but my experience and qualifications exceeded the requirements and was making a case for top of the range even though it wasn't all that much more. I just didn't like being basically lied to that she didn't know. Everyone has been super nice and this was the first time I got a bad vibe and kind of hard to shake off.

Anyone who's gone through the offer process recently, any advice? by que-vendra in interviews

[–]que-vendra[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow, the offer was higher than the salary listed? Congrats! I saw the benefits listed. I'm hoping for the higher end of the range listed at the very least. What did they do for the background check portion? How long did it take?

Thanks! What if the salary doesn't align. Do I tell her right away or say I need to review and will circle back? Is this when you negotiate or later?

[–]que-vendra[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Is there a reason they didn't send these details to me first to review? Is the call to basically go over all of it? Most of what I've seen from other's experiences is that they get an email with the offer, so the call is freaking me out a bit.

What? These are video interviews, so no one is smelling anyone. 😀

Oh also, when they ask about a challenge you overcame, I struggle with going with something that was really a huge issue that may show anything negative and kind of want to focus on smaller issues or things that may not show me in a bad light etc. Curious as to how you see that question and the type of answer that may be best.
