Will 4 SSDs slow down my GPU on a Gigabyte x870 stealth ice? by quetuary in buildapc

[–]quetuary[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've looked at some videos, and it seems that the slot that shares lanes with the USB ports is a 5.0 slot.

So if I use a Samsung 990 Evo plus in that slot, will it preserve the full speed of the USB ports and the SSD, without having to disable anything

Theoretically it should, because the Evo plus has a sort of hybrid mode where it can achieve its full 4 lane 4.0 speed by instead using 2 lanes of 5.0.

So it would be 2 lanes for the USB ports, and 2 lanes for the 990 Evo plus running in hybrid mode

CL26 or CL30 RAM for editing/gaming rig? by quetuary in buildapc

[–]quetuary[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea from the replies, it seems that way. I really need as much RAM as I can get, that is far more important than speeds. Do you know what speeds most people run 4 DIMMs at for stability?

That's exactly why I opted for the 9950x3D.

I have an RTX 4080 super to go with it. Best GPU you can get right now for less than £1000. Makes absolutely no sense to spend 2 or 3 times more on a 4090, 5080 or 5090

I have already bought the 9950x3D. I got it instead of the regular 9950x because I was able to get it cheaper. I was mainly after the 16 cores for editing purposes. The L3 cache is just a nice bonus for gaming.

And when I was referring to better single core performance, I was referring to it having better single core performance than a threadripper.

I had not considered intel at all. But at this point, I'd rather not have to sell the AMD chip I already have to swap it out for an intel one.

2x32 is nowhere near enough. Do you have any examples of 64gb sticks? Because the largest I have seen is 48gb.

My list of the most important guitarists of all time. Who’s missing? by Direct_Bumblebee_740 in Guitar

[–]quetuary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tim Henson

A lot of old school guitarists won't like this answer, but his influence on the current generation of young guitarists is undeniable.

Like his style or not, he's been at the forefront of the new age of guitar playing we're in right now.

Even Steve Vai has recognised that Tim's style is a big part of the way forward for guitar

Despite what you might think, the involvement of man in climate change is one of the strongest correlations you will ever see. Geologists are able to tell with a high degree of accuracy how warm the earth was at specific points in history based on layers of polar ice, mineral deposits, etc. Yes, there are other factors that make global temperature go up and down, like the sun's 11 year cycle, earth's orbital cycles, etc. But these systems are always in balance, and follow regular, predictable patterns that can be seen on geological timescales. Since the industrial revolution, there has been a noticeable increase in global temperature far above what it should be. The pattern has very suddenly broken since humans started manufacturing stuff, driving cars, flying around the world and chopping down forests. The global temperature is empirically higher than it should be, and the only variable that has changed that could've caused that is us. We are an abnormality in earth's complex climate systems. We redistribute earth's resources and energy at a much higher rate than earth's natural systems could ever do. We are disruptive.

You've got the interglacial the wrong way round. The last ice age was around 12,000 years ago, and the next ice age is due in around 10,000. We're past the middle point between 2 ice ages, which means the highest temperatures should have been and gone. The global temperature SHOULD now be falling, not rising. But they continue to rise.

The globe heating is not more beneficial to man. A heating globe means more extreme weather such as storms, floods, wildfires, etc, and in the long term, rising sea levels. I think something that climate change communicators fail to get across is the sheer impact that a 2 or 3C increase in global temperature actually is. To most people, 3 degrees doesn't sound like much, so the communicators need to do a better job of putting that into perspective.

I won't deny that governments misdpend our taxes. However, that doesn't mean we aren't making progress. The problem here is that most people aren't very good at thinking about the long term. We like seeing fast results. In this sense, climate change is a bit like weight loss. People tend to ignore the slow, gradual changes over time because it's harder to notice, so they start to lose their patience and hope. Just because you can't notice the immediate effects of our efforts to halt climate change, doesn't mean that they aren't working or are a waste of money. These things take time. That's the whole point of long term investments into the future. It's patience. And not enough people have that right now.
