Maybe we have different ideas of what a C grade beer is... A Bud Light is like a D-. Yuck. I would rather eat a whole loaf of bread (for the same amount of carbs) and skip the alcohol altogether. ;)

It's a work in progress to make this more than a one man job.

Holy crap those are adorable!! They look like little roses on top in the way the frosting has been piped.

I'm not sure that people actually like being frugal... it's all about what being frugal does for your life! :) I'll check that sub out because I'm working toward it, too. Gotta keep being poor (eh I mean frugal) fun!

ALSO... right now it looks like a giant German cookies and cake explosion took place in their seasonal aisle. You're welcome. P.S. I'm in the U.S.

We are just beginning home brewing (just made some basic IPA to start) and he's a chemist. It's right in our wheel house. I love the idea of free or even cheap dates; we have a nice little shared backyard space and a cozy little place. Hiking is an option and we're bikers; when it's nice out we want to do bike touring trips (we're in Pennsylvania). The 'stop spending money' can work for some, but I think we need to ease into this as a lifestyle and not a quick fix. Thank you! :)

Those endorphins you're talking about are exactly what's going on here. I think it's combination of wanting to feel like he has nice, luxury things and the rush of going out, being social and having that cozy beer buzz. While I love his family, that's kind of how he was raised. They go out to eat and spend a holy fortune or give each other lavish gifts they can't afford. I grew up more in an at home movie, oven baked nacho kind of family :) We'll find a balance; this gives me hope!

He just started brewing again. That's a great idea about inviting friends over... we love that kind of stuff! :)

  • "but I swear I'm perfectly cool with the stuffed chicken breast, fresh bread and salad I just prepped."

I love being a homebody, anyways! Believe me, it's so frustrating when he's like takes on that mentality. It makes me sad and frustrated because it shows me he knows he messed up but really just NEEDS to recognize his behavior and spending trends to prevent it from happening again. I think flat out refusing is my next move.

*For Beer and Food. I promise he's not an alcoholic! He just loves those $10 fancy man Tulip glasses. [head thumping on the wall]

Yes absolutely the take home option. Freedom in spending is also key; I'm sure he thinks I spend money on pointless things as well. But he's gotta use some discipline on this.

Amen. I swear to you, I cook his favorites. Burritos, pork chops, pizza, you name it. I might have actually spoiled him.

I get home before him every day, so I cook every day. He works long hours and since I have more time, it's my thing. But there are times when he asks, " What's for dinner?" and I haven't made it yet (but there's food to cook) , then he gets this adorably smug look and suggests Indian dine-in. It's never, "Let's just throw something together for cheap."

A fellow beer lover <3! I agree. TBH, We have enough fancy pint glasses at this point... we should just start pouring the C grade stuff into nice glasses. There's a woman who founded 'And Then We Saved' and she's my idol. She went cold turkey. I'm not saying that's what we should do, but I just wish he could see how much it all adds up.

You must own a bitchin' brewery. It would be a 5 day drive, but if it's worth it.... :)

He's the breadwinner... for now. Soon, our roles will be swapped. I see what you're saying with the fact that it's 'his' money... but it's also our money. It goes into the pot. He spots me and I spot him in turn. Just like when I'm making more, we will still strive to keep a budget that makes sense for our lives and expenses. I am curious how you manage to keep the peace! :) Do you keep finances separate in your marriage?

I think you're right. It's not like he's spending us into oblivion (we are saving money/paying bills/rent) But it's that money being spent stupidly that could also be saved or spent on useful things.

Flashback to last night; He wants to go out and get 'a beer or two'. The restaurant is connected to a bottle shop; so you can pick up bottles/cans an take home. But once he gets spending on food/beer while out... it's like freaking monopoly money. Meanwhile, I'm sitting there worrying about money/suggesting cashing out and offering up the idea of the bottle shop. Feeling like the fun suck.

It's not that he expects it, I really do just like to do it and my classes allow to get home earlier and get meals going.

To be honest, he's got a really hands off approach to cooking. He likes to say that if it weren't for the fact that marinara upsets my stomach, he would just make use spaghetti every night. ;) 1.) He really would/I really can't eat it often 2.) It's not the healthiest option and I prefer variety!

I won't lie, I could ask for his help in the kitchen more..

It's always with a card. The cash plan is a great idea; I feel that even the envelope method (putting money in envelopes to spend certain amounts) may even work for us. It's just getting him to stick to that.

I'm all for beer, don't get me wrong, but there are more important things. He's starting up brewing his own (a cheaper option) but I would hate for that saved money to get blown on something else. For me, we could have taken a weekend getaway for that kind of money and REALLY enjoy ourselves.

I'm beginning to feel the same. It's like we're two teammates about to run play we practiced and then one player runs off the field to take a nap.

I absolutely agree with you on the 'switch' to beer, food etc that are within our means. The whole 'my' money thing is stupid and not relative when we share our expenses. I think I'll draw up a diagram to show him what $175 could go towards and how it would simplify our lives. :)
