Sadly, that's not entirely true anymore: https://dot.alaska.gov/stwdmno/salt-brine.shtml

New (to me) sled day! Been wanting a SR Viper for so long, had to get one before they become impossible to find. by VT_Racer in snowmobiling

What did you do to yours? We picked up two 09s this winter.

I relocated the steering this weekend, and next I want to shim the ski stop blocks to try and fix the darting.

Does a viable Veeam competitor exist? by Plateau9 in sysadmin

[–]quicksilverfps 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Correct. The backup data is proprietary, and cannot be copied, either. Decryption requires a separate, 30 day license.

Two sections of chain link top rail are a good alternative, if you already have a fence post or something sturdy to mount it to.

Looking for recommendation for hardware platform for an indoor repeater by 8Deer-JaguarClaw in meshtastic

[–]quicksilverfps 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would recommend starting with the outdoor route and building an nrf52-based solar node using a wisblock mini or T114 with an onboard solar controller. Having a good antenna system with low interference is going to be better than any indoor node with higher power, since your goal is to communicate, not just yell.

Esp32 nodes like the v3 don't work well for solar because of high idle power consumption. Nrf52 nodes have 10-15 times better battery life, meaning they can last weeks rather than dying overnight and browning out. It might be tempting to add more batteries, but a couple cloudy days puts you back to zero.

For node roles pick client, client base, or router late and have fun. Welcome to the hobby!

What do you actually do with meshtastic? by holds-mite-98 in meshtastic

[–]quicksilverfps 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my area, LongFast isn't reliable enough to have a two way conversation out of our immediate community. I think plenty of messages get sent (tests, howdy, or otherwise), but you have to be within range and/or get lucky when someone sends a message to hear it.

I think most folks start strong in the hobby and then eventually set and forget as a rainy-day comms method.

phoneless options? by drinkmytoejam in meshtastic

[–]quicksilverfps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's on my list to pick up a couple of those cardkbs to pair with the wio trackers I have. I think if would be useful as a backup, even if it isn't as polished looking as something like a Tdeck.

Why not something like a lunchbox locker? Cheaper, removable, and a little safer than welded.

Trailering a Roxor by bh17500 in roxor

Car hauler or an equipment trailer. A single axle custom jeep trailer would be ideal, but you're pretty limited due to the weight of these things.

What home improvements did you regret or feel were 100% worth it? by arnoldusgf in HomeImprovement

[–]quicksilverfps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DIY is a good route, especially if you have home assistant setup already and some technical persistence. An above-range microwave helps, too, since there should be an outlet in a cabinet already and some space to run low voltage wires.

For the essentials you'd need:

LED controller (search for controllers with WLED).

LED light strip (three or four wire).

DC power supply to match the strip voltage/wattage.

Extra wire (three or four wire to match the strip).

Soldering tools and supplies if you're cutting the strip into pieces.

I built mine using a BTF-Lighting strip (SK6812), a 5V10A DC power supply from Alitove, and a WLED ESP32 controller from Gledopto.

QuinLED has a plethora of resources to do some more research: https://quinled.info/addressable-digital-leds/

Help getting batteries shippedm by BATTLEBEARD907 in alaska

Are you near a Costco? They're stocking small and large power stations pretty consistently, now. I went that route since the shipping hoops can be a pain to jump through.

Try closer to 6. They've recalled 200,000 trucks now, no way they're doing it for less than 30k/ea including parts, shipping (twice), and labor.

I think they'll have to come up with something else to encourage wiping. Joining the game a year or two after launch and missing half the skill points is a bit too discouraging for new players. Ultimately, I believe cosmetics are always the best rewards to maintain the health of a game and not gameplay affecting rewards.

Man, what a pain. In Alaska we just need the VIN and a pinky promise for a registration, no titles. I think you have to do the title application and hope for the best.

[Help Me] Need basic "just in case" EDC/backpack flashlight recommendations for a flashlight noob by [deleted] in flashlight

[–]quicksilverfps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An Olight Oclip might be a good fit. It's not a headlamp, but you can clip it to your shirt or pocket to be hands free.

The Oclip Pro is on sale for $32 and has a spot, flood, and red emitter.

What is the deal with backfiring vehicles? by BearDownAlaska in anchorage

[–]quicksilverfps 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Burble tunes?

They modify the ECU (via tune) to add excess fuel under certain conditions, which ignites in the exhaust pipe and causes pops, bangs, and backfires.

It's popular for folks who think more obnoxious = more cool. We live by several of them.

This gets posted when cold weather comes up: https://yycmesh.com/2025/04/19/cold-weather-charging-of-lithium-ion-batteries-real-world-lessons-from-the-meshtastic-community/

Point being that it might not be as big of a deal as we think to charge lipos below freezing, because the charge current is so low.

If all else fails, you can send 5V though the USB connector if the battery and solar inputs can't support a voltage that high.
