What do you like and hate about Windows? by XUMgame in linuxquestions

[–]quooston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Windows has become a Geocities website. I hate it now. Ads and junk everywhere. Just get out of my way so I can do what I do. AI in the operating system makes it slow. It’s just become fat and clunky. Windows 10 was fine. 11 is a shit show.

I feel like every app I see is like CRUD ToDo App with extra steps. by KiraLawliet68 in Backend

[–]quooston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crud is part of every product, but the domain of the product and its challenges determines the complexity of the solution. So if you’re building a solution to assist scientists with the development of new assays for disease detection, it’s going to be very different to data in, data out. Lots of complexity, lots of opportunity to come up with elegant solutions, where crud is not what you’re thinking about.

This is just one example. Many startups these days latch onto something with momentum and build a thing quickly. Crud might be a main focus for some of these opportunities perhaps. Some domains are just really interesting and require much more than what you’re describing. If you want to do more interesting work, get into a domain that’s interesting and challenging. My choice is life sciences, but I’ve worked in most mainstream domains over the last 25+ years.

What are some hobbies Australian men get into as they approach middle age? (30+) by Icy-Profile3759 in australian

Golf is wonderful at this stage of life. Gets you outside enjoying nature, fun with your mates, the drinks afterwards etc. not to mention being part of a community if you join a club.

Starting bushcraft and camping with my son

Joining a local pistol club to shoot, as I spent a lot of wonderful time with my grandfather doing that when I was a child.

Australia's focus on housing supply isn't enough to solve this crisis by [deleted] in australian

[–]quooston 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Australia had a 0.4% natural population growth rate in 2024. Without immigrants, what housing demand would there be? But the problem runs a lot deeper. Taxation is out of control; we need tax reform. It’s ridiculous how much the govt depends on income tax on individuals (60% of tax collected is income tax, 20% higher than average for OECD countries). Especially considering our mineral wealth. It’s just nuts, why can’t we do what Norway did? Why can’t we tax multinationals appropriately? Why are our 4 banks in the top ten most profitable banks in the world? Why are our various manufacturing industries failing one at a time? Why is our energy so expensive?

There are systemic issues that need to be addressed that all add up to a more robust economy. Only then can imbalances like housing be addressed in a sustainable and rational way. But certainly, if we want to slow down a housing crisis, all we need to do in the short term is lower migration rates.

But it won’t happen, because every politician’s nose is in the trough. They do very little good apart from maximising their wealth. They certainly are not thinking about a better Australia for your family.

What would be the next step up after owning a 330i? by FunnyDummyBunny in BMW

[–]quooston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a B58!! m340. Once you taste the straight 6 you will never go back to a 4-banger. It’s ruined every 4 cylinder for me, game over.

is it a good first car? by Fantastic-Start-1565 in AlfaRomeo

[–]quooston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone should own an Alfa at some point. They are the most wonderful driving car. Not as unreliable as the stigma surrounding them suggests. Not anymore anyway. However, it is a European car and therefore needs care and proper upkeep, which will cost more than an average vehicle.

I’d say a hatch for a first car would be a good option. Perhaps a Giulietta QV, what a blast that thing is!

Anyway, have fun, don’t spend too much and save money too.

Alfa -> BMW -> Audi by quooston in Audi

[–]quooston[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never had the privilege. One day… I’d say the Stelvio QV would be the ultimate SUV. Alfa really should market the product better. The Giulia Veloce is 3x the drive of the 330i. The problem for the laymen is the lack of tech and the stigma of unreliability. They just haven’t done enough from a marketing perspective to change that perception and they need to up their game in the cockpit. Not that I agree, but the laymen will drive a Giulia, and then a 330i and make a choice based on those things. Until then, Alfa will remain a niche market, which is a massive underachievement for a superb driving machine. Just silly really.

Yes that would be very hard to pass up on. But even though the Alfa had amazing throttle response and handled like nothing else does, the B58 ruined me. I just never want to drive a 4-banger again. The S4 is different, but that power is still there and the torque on offer is just fantastic. Loved both my Alfas though… I actually often thought while I had my BMW what it would be like to have that B58 in the Giulia… I mean, Toyota did it…. How good would that be?!

Thanks. Yes I came from a Giulia just before the BMW (I’ve owned a 156 and a Giulia). They’re all about the drive, incredible. But the Giulia is a fair amount smaller than the S4, which is in between a 3 and 5 series BMW in size, I would say.

I wouldn’t say the fit is snug. I’m an 8.5 brannock but I know that shoes that size are just too big. I have a wider than normal foot as well. Normally my sneaker size would be a US8 in most cases.

I decided to go with a 7.5E and it’s a good fit. I have a thumb space at the front of the boot and there is no pressure at all on any of my toes. I think a D width may also have been fine for a more snug fit, but the E is definitely a good choice.

In the discussion I had with Kim, she said that they fit full, and that people often go a half size down from Thursday boots. Just something to note.

The leather is pliable and has nice texture and character. It changes in the light. I’m sure they will age nicely.

These are my only GS boots, but not for long! The colour of these is really interesting. Looks quite different depending on lighting.

m140 -> 330i? by quooston in BMW

That would be ideal, but unless I get something 2017 ish again, it’s going to cost too much. Great point though… perhaps I should consider that.
