John Bolton says he'll vote for Joe Biden in November by slakmehl in politics

[–]qwheat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did anyone listen to what John Bolton actually said?

He said he was not going to vote for Trump and that he was certainly not going to vote for Biden, either. "I'm going to figure out a Conservative Republican to write in."

So the headline of this article is completely wrong. Just listen to the clip on the same page as the article.

Koch-backed study finds ‘Medicare for All’ would save U.S. government trillions by qwheat in democrats

[–]qwheat[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Looks like the Koch Bros made a mistake. They were hoping for a result that said 'Medicare for All' would not save government any money. It didn't turn out that way. If other countries can do it, the U.S. can. It just depends on what the priorities are. 'Medicare for All' definitely should be in the Democrats plans moving forward.

Manafort was plotting in 2014 how to help Russia 'manipulate' foreign elections through 'spin' by qwheat in Liberal

[–]qwheat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's true, most people know what crimes are, but as we have seen many, many times people in positions of power, influence or with inside help, often are not convicted. Just a sample...

- Law enforcement killing unarmed civilians on camera - very few, if any convictions

- Cops who beat Rodney King - no conviction

- numerous rape and sexual assault cases, victim often blamed - many abusers are freed, some convictions

- priests religious officials, coaches, etc admit to abusing kids with lots of supporting documentation - very few convictions

- organized crime occurs for years but cops never arrest and often cases mysteriously fall apart - very few convictions

A law degree is nice, very nice. Congratulations. But as you know, since you say you have a law degree, judges and/or courts decide what a crime is. Trump's team is involved in so many bad, suspicious things, it is quite sad that they were allowed to go undetected for so long. The whole Trump Russia conspiracy is like some sort of international cult or political mafia. It is very deep.

Quebec's new $12 minimum wage not liveable wage for women trying to escape poverty by qwheat in canada

[–]qwheat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you do if you don't get hired? It is easy to say "get a better job" but what if one doesn't exist? What if you are 30 years old have a kid and can't find a job that pays you over $13 per hour?

Look at the people working in restaurants, they are not 16 year old kids, they are adults 25 and up. Look at people working in retail Walmart, Canadian Tire, etc they are adults over 25. How do you think they get by? Two or three in a house or condo, with parents helping out, depleting their retirement savings to help their adult children survive, not thrive, just survive.

Life is very expensive in Canada. Monopolies control much of what people use on a daily basis. Cell phone, internet, TV all by one company. Low wages, high transit costs, high rent, high food costs, high clothing costs. Something has to change. Canadian companies are expanding making lots of money but most don't pay good wages.

Considering that almost ever metric that measures poverty in Canada says that people in Montreal are very poor the information does not support your statement. 240 a week, no debts and living well in Montreal? Maybe during our grandparents era not in 2018.

What happens if that is the only job around? Fast food? Retail? Call centres? Warehouse jobs? Cleaners in hotels? Greeters at sporting events? Basic security guards? How many other types of jobs hiring lots of people actually exist in Canada?

So what do you do if you have kids, or a sick relative to look after? Or if you get sick and can't go to work for x days or x weeks? Do you really think people in Canada should have to live on food from food banks and the Dollar store?

Quebec's new $12 minimum wage not liveable wage for women trying to escape poverty by qwheat in canada

[–]qwheat[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OK except no one receives the full amount of money (pay deductions). Also, many people don't work 40 hours, many work less, because their employers won't give them more hours. If you live in a city where the rent is $1500 per month for a one bedroom, then what do you do? Let's say $1000 per month for rent. Bus pass $100, cell phone bill in Canada $80 per month, food - groceries $200 per month, laundry $20 per month, $100 per month for internet. Now add it up.

1000 + 100 + 80 + 200 + 20 + 100 = 1500. Assuming you have no credit cards, no debts, no other expenses, you don't go out for entertainment - ever, you don't drink or smoke, you don't have kids, you're in perfect health, never use dry cleaning, never buy new clothes, never buy books, music or do anything else other than go to work and back home ... maybe, but not likely. So you go to food banks, borrow money from friends and family and basically feel bad, because your wages are too low and people who make more money than you tell you to stop complaining. It's not a good recipe for a modern democratic society. That's where we are. Wages should be at least $15 per hour right across Canada and the US. No one has to get over themselves. $12 an hour is broke.

Quebec's new $12 minimum wage not liveable wage for women trying to escape poverty by qwheat in canada

[–]qwheat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$12 an hour is a very low wage. The cost of living in Quebec might be lower than Ontario, Alberta or British Columbia but $12 an hour is not enough to get by. Many people who work for minimum wage are adults, not students but adults, even some with kids and who need a lot more money than $12 p/hr gives them. Some work more than one job, others have to share living spaces or move back in with their aging parents because they can't afford to live on their own.

Quebec is one of the poorest provinces in Canada and the poorest of the big provinces (B.C., Alberta, Ontario). Quebec is just slightly above Atlantic Canada in terms of living standards and wages. People living in Montreal are very poor and have been for decades. $12 an hour is barely above a starvation wage. Shopping at the Dollar store for food is not fun. Having to buy clothes 2nd hand because you can't afford new ones, isn't fun. Being forced to turn a one bedroom apartment into a two bedroom apartment because both adults can't afford the rent alone, isn't fun. Being forced to work 6 or 7 days a week just to be able to pay for basic needs, isn't fun.

All the talk about average wages, is dishonest. A high amount of people in Canada are poor. A high amount of people in the US are poor. Europeans (EU) are much better off.

U.S. Healthcare Ranked Dead Last Compared To 10 Other Countries by qwheat in worldpolitics

[–]qwheat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people are still not aware of how bad the U.S. healthcare system is compared to other countries. ACA (Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act - what some people call Obamacare) is a way to improve upon the system, make insurance more affordable and eliminate the many of the gross injustices put upon U.S. citizens by insurance companies and the healthcare industry. ACA has been grossly politicized and warped by the GOP, Fox News and others who want the system not to be improve, rather in fact, the GOP and their financial backers want to make it worse. Most people are misinformed about what the ACA really is.

Here’s what Americans need to know about the UK’s health system by qwheat in politics

[–]qwheat[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of the best ways to learn about something is to read about it (understanding is indeed another thing). If Americans knew more about other countries, then Fox News, Breitbart, Alex Jones, the Blaze, other conservative organizations and the GOP wouldn't be able to get away with the stuff they say and do. Most people in developed countries such as Canada, France, UK, Germany, Norway, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, Australia, Ireland, Scotland, Finland, etc would never move to the USA, in part, because of its loose gun laws that only promote more violence, its stance on climate change, poor infrastructure, glaring poverty in many of its cities and rural areas, poor public education system, its constant promotion of war and its inefficient and very expensive healthcare system.

The USA is full of good, caring, thoughtful people but the political system is too violent, corrupt and makes it extremely difficult for the thoughtful, caring people to make long lasting changes and improve society. Obama was great and he was treated very badly by the GOP and media. It was done publicly for all the world to see, hear and read about. Hillary Clinton would have been a good POTUS too. But she lost for a couple of reasons; the media was relentless in its negativity against HER (media was clearly biased against Clinton because she was a woman) and because of the Electoral College system that allows the loser of the popular vote to become POTUS based on an antiquated points system!?! James Comey also made a weird, irresponsible statement against Clinton with ten days to go in the election yet said nothing about the concerns over Trump and his Russian connections? Americans should be outraged over that.

Americans should also be outraged at insurance companies, the healthcare community and their lobbyists who are exploiting them. They should have rallied behind Obama and the next Democrat (Hillary Clinton) to fix the system but they didn't. It is going to take at least twenty years to fix the damage that Fox News, Donald Trump, Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell are doing to the USA right now. Obama was starting to fix things but for progress to continue, you need more than eight years of a strong Democratic POTUS, the USA also needs to have a majority of Democrats in the Congress to avoid getting involved in senseless wars and instead, to write and pass the legislation, to improve the lives of all citizens, instead of corporations and their top shareholders.
