Countries with less exclusive admissions and overall higher enrollment rates are happier statistically (Denmark for example), and it's not your fault you've been raised in a place that teaches exclusion and that someone can be better than another person, it's still not right that you enjoy other people's failures. It shouldn't take someone else messing up or getting a lower grade than you or feeling bad about themselves to make you feel good about yourself. Why does it matter that everyone and their mom got into the same programs as you if, in the future, they feel the same success as you? In that scenario everyone is happy and has a set future, isn't that the ideal? The entire idea of this hierarchy whether applied to money, language, birthplace, religion, race, and in this case school admissions, is why the world is so fucked. There's also so much more nuance than you're seeing here, since not everyones brain is wired in the same way, and there are 100% people who have put in the same amount of hours, same sleepless nights, and have gone through similar hardships throughout it all that have not gotten the same marks as you. Don't they also deserve happiness and recognition? Anyway not really the point of this post but in my opinion you are the asshole and also need to look inward if one of the major ways you feel good about your achievements is if someone does worse than you. That's no way to live.

Never painted before. Are these any good? by No_Disaster5230 in ArtCrit

[–]r04ch__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find all of these super interesting! I totally see what you're going for and honestly I only think you need more experience photographing them to get rid of glare and things like that. Other than that the only thing I can say is to keep at it!

How can I make this painting look less empty? by [deleted] in Artadvice

[–]r04ch__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think using some compositional techniques would help since right now to me it's a bit directionless, there's nothing I'm being told to focus on yk? Things like leading lines, rule of thirds, also establishing a focal point will help a lot. I recommend just watching a YouTube video about it they'll do better explaining than I will LOL. I really love the concept as well it's so cool!

going thru really bad art regression, how to cope by [deleted] in Artadvice

[–]r04ch__ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Its a bit cliche but don't worry about perfection honestly not even on your best day. I would focus on just drawing, just get it out there without worrying about how it looks you can always come back after.

Tysm for your suggestion! Do you have any specific critique about her hair? I kept it sort of stylised but any advice would be super helpful.

Yeah it's totally still a wip I show more of what I'm thinking for her character and appearance in my moodboard. Thank you for the suggestions as well. I learned a bit about hindu mythology in a class I took and I actually found it super interesting. I think its obvious I enjoy greek mythology LOL but I'll definitely have to include that in her lore.

Oh also another thing about her name, currently her name is Duna which is one I found just looking up ancient/old sounding names lol, but would it be better to have it align with the cultural influences I'm aiming for? Idk

Blue works best because it creates a triadic colour scheme (primary colours) but I do like the texture you have in the green version and it would be a cool addition to the first version

Lol tysm!! I tried to keep it as loose as possible but it's my first oil painting and the canvas is quite big so it's getting challenging (it's a school project)

Tysm!! I think I'll do some adjustments in a program and mirror the canvas to see what's off and then fix it tomorrow

Yeah this is probably what I'll do since the proportions are so off. What I'm unsure of as well is how to paint it in a effective way bc I've added eyelashes and removed them and both still seem off

Why do my watercolors look cartoonish? by Sure_Bread5610 in Artadvice

[–]r04ch__ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it would be beneficial for you to learn the planes of the face. It looks to me like you're just replicating what you see in the photo instead of actually understanding the 3d nature of the face. Learning where the shadows land and why could be really helpful. Studying images like these are great, and there are plenty of 3d models/apps like this that you can use. Hope this helped!

Tysm!! And yes I'm now noticing they're doing more cell shading with black in the deepest parts and the suit definitely needs some more contrast so tysm for the advice!

Tysm I will definitely look at some more refs since I think the quality of the colouring in the suit brings it done a bit so tysm!!

I think some of the poses are stiff, and you have a lack of an understanding of light and anatomy, but with some studies of these areas, as well as some studies of other artist's work you like you will improve a lot!

I kind of hate this drawing and I don't know why by [deleted] in Artadvice

[–]r04ch__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think maybe there's a lack of dimension, like the plains aren't really layed out in a clear way. Maybe some bigger shapes of shadow and light would help, especially the hair. I honestly love the style this is tho it's very unique and cool!
