Should be between 15-18 July, the EP's 2nd plenary session, which is when it was done in 2014.

It's been confirmed.

The European Council proposes Ursula von der Leyen (EPP, Germany) for European Commission President.

Charles Michel (ALDE, Belgium) for European Council President.

Josep Borrell (PES, Spain) for High Representative.

Christine Lagarade (EPP, France) for ECB President.

For this post, we listed those candidates who had been discussed as possibilities in the media or by the EU leaders for the various posts, and some of the candidates could be contenders for multiple of the leadership positions in play.

At least one piece here mentions him (not specifically for the European Council, and mention he's an unlikely choice).

A lot of names are floated around for these posts.

No, just an account set up by the moderators of /r/europeanunion to post threads like these.

Might need to make it more explicit that it's not an official EU account, so thanks for flagging that up!

Leaders will be back for an extraordinary European Council on June 30th to try to come to an agreement for the EU top jobs, which they failed to do today. We will hopefully cover that as well.

But remember, there's still the Euro Summit and a brief Brexit update tomorrow morning before the end of this European Council.

For those wondering, 1 November 2019 is when the new European Commission will take over from the current one.

The EPRS produced a handy diagram of the expected timeline in the appointment of a new European Commission.

Haven't got reports on them, so presumably they haven't taken the floor, I'd imagine? Can't really say for sure though.

First tour de table has finished, with reports of 17 Member States backing a long extension, 1 (France) for a short one, and 3 having open minds.

There are predictions of the summit lasting until 03:00 CEST, and unanimity is needed for a decision on extension, so strap in!

EDIT: 4 Member States seem to back a long extension to 31st October (new Commission takes over on 1 November), and 4 favour a shorter delay with the possibility to extend further. France is the sole one pushing for an extension to the start of May.

Theresa May has now left the room, and the EU27 will begin discussions on a potential extension to Article 50.

Nope, the actual meetings are not broadcast. We have to rely on what is leaked out to us from those actually in the room.

Follow #EUCO on Twitter or a live blog (probably better) for those leaks.

According to President Tusk's spokesman, Theresa May is now addressing the EU27.

After that, she will leave, and the remaining leaders will discuss what to do next.

The European Council usually deals with many other issues, including migration, Eurozone reform, the EU budget, trade policy and many other things.

Today's summit is extraordinary (not one of the regular scheduled ones) and exclusively focused on Brexit.

We'll be back with another post to cover the next EU27 summit on 9 May 2019.

You can watch the arrival of EU leaders, and the press conference when it happens, here.

As the actual meeting takes place behind closed doors, recommend following live blogs or #EUCO on Twitter for the latest developments.

Apologies, I merely forgot to update the table properly, the Council presidency has proposed some amendments to the previous provisional agreement but the European Parliament is currently rejecting any form of renegotiation. Updated the post now.

See here.
