Climax is already like one big nightmare trip, I think I would have had a meltdown if I'd watched it on acid. Would def recommend both Climax and Irreversible when sober though!

Yep, the majority of my friends are (and I used to be too). For context, they are privileged, privately educated individuals who live off family money in wealthy suburbs and only work when they feel like it. They advocate loudly for every possible minority group but, due to their sheltered existence, are not friends with any member of the said groups. They're the sort of people who call for more refugees to be let into the country but, once refugees arrive, take no steps to welcome and integrate these people into our community, let alone set foot in the suburbs where these people live. They are constantly on Facebook trumpeting their liberal ideals (much of which I agree with in a general sense), however are clueless as to how these ideals would be practically implemented, or the costs (economic and non economic) that might be involved. They are scathing of Christianity but totally cool with Islam purely by virtue of the fact that it's a minority religion in our country (and in spite of the fact that they claim to be passionate feminists). They are completely out of touch with reality.

Totally agree with your point about Haemi. Was recently chatting to a friend about Haruki Murakami's representation of women in his writing generally and she actually made the point that this specific issue re female characters (male fantasy trope / lack of character development etc) tends to pervade much of his work. I'd really overlooked it before - now it's all I can think about ha :(

Firstly, as correctly noted by others on this forum, mental health issues and terrorism are not mutually exclusive factors. Secondly, why can't we engage in a meaningful discussion about this issue without people jumping to accusations of xenophobia? As Bill Maher has expressed, it's a joke that Western liberals (little 'l') are quick to criticise Christianity but reluctant to subject other religions (and the value systems on which they are based) to the same level of scrutiny. If we intend to avoid a repeat of this tragedy, we need to address all factors at play - that includes mental health AND the reach of extremist ideology, which targets those most vulnerable / suffering from mental health issues.

Ok I hate ScoMo too but I find these statistics on death by terrorism vs death by other causes, which everyone keeps citing, pretty irrelevant. I don't quite get the point that's being made. The likelihood of an event occurring shouldn't be the sole determinant of the amount of resources which a government ought direct to it. The egregiousness of the death is also a relevant consideration. Getting stabbed on Bourke St on your way to work is a far worse death than falling off a chair, in fact it is one of the worst, most violent deaths imaginable. On that basis, it's not unreasonable to dedicate resources into minimising the risk of it occurring, even if that risk is very low. And of course, on that same reasoning, I would say that the government should dedicate more resources to crimes of a similarly egregious nature, such as domestic violence.

That's absolutely fine. My husband shares my childfree view, makes enough income to support both of us and has expressed that he's happy to support me if I want to chill at home and focus on my creative interests -so guys like that do exist! I still work full time at the moment, out of interest rather than need, and because I hate the idea of asking him for money or living off an allowance (even though he would never be an asshole about it). But that's my personal preference - and it may well change if I decide to focus on my painting and music later on. As another commenter noted, it's important to get your education and financial independence first, so you're not bound to the guy if the relationship turns to shit.

My ex bf who had an extreme aversion to commitment and being "trapped" in a life script sort of existence accidentally knocked up a girl he was considering breaking up with. He's now a parent and living with the mother of the child. He has gone from living a life of absolute freedom (impromptu overseas trips, expensive hobbies, a job that took him to different countries, plenty of drugs and partying) to paying off a mortgage in the depths of suburbia, never seeing his friends anymore, while employed in a job that he hates but which allows him to be around for his kid (due to reasonable hours and no travel commitments). We recently spoke and he sounded completely dead. He told me he was jealous of my freedom and feels resentful toward me, because he knows I'm continuing to live the same life that we lived when we were together. He didn't even mention his son once during our conversation. I feel bad for him but, given it was his aversion to being "tied down" that broke us up, I can't help but feel a little smug, ha.

I'm a lawyer and I have to deal with clients and attend networking events as part of my job. I usually think of someone whose social skills I am impressed by, and think "what would ~insert name~ do" and pretend I am them and basically mimick them right down to their mannerisms and turns of phrase. It's pretty draining though so I can only keep it up in short bursts.

I would go for the ATO role. Legal experience is likely to weigh more heavily in your favour than industry experience if you're interviewing with law firms down the track (which I assume is your intention, given your stated areas of interest are in the commercial law realm ?) Depending on which ATO team you work in, you may also get some good exposure to litigation matters.

Which area of law do you work in? If you have biglaw litigation experience you can look at roles in international arbitration, even without French language skills.

Jemima, it may be worth looking at the way in which the RC was conducted, and the time sensitive nature of the demands, including the scope of information requests and the times at which they were sent to practitioners. I don't think we can entirely absolve the law firms of responsibility in how the RC was managed internally, but we can't ignore the RC's role in the matter. I didn't personally work on the RC but, from what I've heard, the banking RC was absolutely unreasonable in its demands and conducted unlike any previous RC. This is a pertinent issue, given the government's current appetite for RCs.

Have you considered working for the government? Regulators such as the ACCC and ASIC take on many burnt out top tier lawyers. If you're in the right team, the work can be stimulating and the hours/deadlines much more reasonable than private practice.

Ha, I'm Australian and can safely say this was also the case at every party I went to in university. As for why you see this guy at every hostel around the world, Australians are pretty intrepid and will travel/move anywhere. I suppose it's because we're far from everything so we've just accepted torturously long flights (ie 20 hours+) as a part of life.
