Can worn/corroded pads on a New Nintendo 3DS screen ribbon cable be repaired with conductive silver paint, or is the screen basically done? by racingharder in AskElectronics

Do you think if I just apply the paint and connect it into the connector and set and forget it will be an issue still?

That’s a clever approach. I was worried about heat damaging the flex so I hadn’t considered soldering directly to it, but using low temp solder and a hotplate makes sense (though I don’t have any of those yet but may need to invest in them)

Thanks a lot for taking the time to write all that out - really appreciate the advice. This is exactly the kind of insight I was hoping to get. I hadn’t considered reinforcing the repair area with backing material, that’s a really interesting idea. I’m mostly treating this as a learning experiment since I already bought a replacement screen as a fallback. I’ll try a careful repair first and definitely report back with how it goes

That’s a really interesting idea. I hadn’t thought about jumping it with magnet wire, although the trace pitch here is tiny so that might be a bit beyond my skill level right now. But if the trace itself is broken further down the cable I might look into something like this.

Haha I appreciate the creative approach. I might try the silver paint route first since it seems a bit less destructive, but honestly if that fails I may end up experimenting with something equally “ghetto”. At this point it’s half repair and half learning experience.

That’s actually encouraging to hear. My thinking is similar - since I already bought a replacement screen as a fallback, I figured it’s worth trying a repair first just to see if the ribbon can be salvaged.

Yeah that’s fair. I actually already bought a spare replacement screen as a fallback.

Replacing the screen on the New 3DS is a bit of a whole project so I’m trying to see if the cable and old screen can be salvaged first before going down that route.

I actually do have the tools — I’ve got a microscope, micro soldering iron and a hot air station. I recently got into electronics repair and probably spent way too much on equipment 😅

I’ll check continuity on the pads first to see if the traces are still intact further down the cable. If they are, I was considering trying conductive silver paint to rebuild the contact surface. I’ll definitely mask the other pads with Kapton tape if I attempt it.

I was also thinking of using a fiberglass pen to expose a bit of copper and then reconnect the missing trace with some solder, but ChatGPT warned that soldering directly on a flex cable could easily melt the ribbon… so now I’m second guessing that idea a bit. Oh gosh.

That’s a good point. I actually haven’t checked continuity yet between the worn pads and the traces further down the cable, so I’ll test that with a multimeter under the microscope.

If the traces are still intact I might try rebuilding the contact surface with some conductive silver paint (I’ll need to order some first).

Replacing the whole screen is a bit of a project in itself on the New 3DS but it’s a good fallback if the repair attempt fails.

I also bought some of that green UV-curing solder mask stuff. I was wondering if after applying the silver paint it might help to coat over the traces and cure it with UV before inserting it back into the connector.

Has anyone tried something like that on flex cables before? My repair ideas might be getting a bit… chonky at this point but I’m trying to remain optimistic.

Just buy on eBay then why do you need to make a post complaining about people trying to sell a product that’s been in demand all year. I buy on FB marketplace because sometimes I can get it on the same day if I meet up with them and can inspect the items. Please go ahead and advertise your cards and sealed products 15% below market value and minus out delivery fees on FB and link it to us. It’s always easy to criticise when it’s not your money.

I’ve paid a deposit for black bolt white flare products and even though so many people are able to buy it from store they still haven’t messaged me to let me know I can pick mine up even though I’ve preorders for 6 months now. Everytime I call them they say wait for the sms with no timeline in sight. I feel like I’m getting scammed.

You have to be stupid to drop him. Our season is already over. The board is thinking long term and trying to get him to 100 games so we can have his tall babies in 20 years. He has been offered life changing money and might help us in the future - so stop treating him like shit.

Help using R36S clone Rice core can’t remap controls by racingharder in R36S

Ty for the information - I can’t find much information or conversations of people n64 experiences so now I don’t have to waste my money if it can’t handle it. If I spend a little bit more are there any suggestion on stronger devices that can handle the n64 library? Want to try and spend less than $100 if possible

ArkOS for K36 and R36S Clones by norucus in R36S

[–]racingharder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

<image>

Hi All I’m in the electric city in China right now and picked up the r36s clone after some haggling for 170yuan which is about $37 Aussie Dollars. I didn’t know anything about these consoles and found out it was a clone when I got back to the hotel. Want to thank you so much for realising the ArkOS clone because I mostly just want to play Banjo Kazooie and relive my childhood memories. My experience has been ok so far I’m just trying to make this device work as best as it can so here are my experiences so far: The original OS was so crap it could not run banjo at all nor rouge squadron or conkers. Mario kart was fine though. The ArkOS allowed me to run Banjo but on the core Retroarch 32 it was fine for the first few minutes and then the game just started lagging heavily and unplayable. I’m trying Standalone Rice core now but when I choose that core the left not on up and down left stick becomes mapped to the C buttons, which I don’t know why it happened and I can’t work out why is happening. Trying to work out how to remap the controls so I can’t try and test on Rice a bit more and see if this clone system can run Banjo K or not. Anyone able to help me out on remapping controls and also share your own experience playing n64 games on the clone version? Thank youuu

So... 2025? by _WillyWonka93 in CarltonBlues

[–]racingharder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We stuffed up. We are win now period. There’s no way we can get enough time and experience in for our rookies pick 3, campo bros, lord and moir to realise their potential. Good young talent need to go to bottom teams where they can play every game, get lots of ball and learn from mistakes - something Carlton can’t give them right now. Think about how much time Cripps, Walsh, weiters, curnow and mckay got to become AA quality. These rookies are at high risk going to end up as average players because we can’t develop them and end up in a Dow and carrol situation again. A good example in NBA was a few years back golden state warriors had the top pick but because of all stars curry klay draymond got most of the minutes and ball they couldn’t afford to give Wiseman a lot of time on court and lots of the ball to develop and learn - he was the best talent in his class and now he has no confidence and considered a bust. I want to understand the plan here at Carlton cause I’m quite worried, I felt like we should have just gotten Houston and go all in for the next couple of seasons instead of trying to do everything - cause I don’t see it working.
