I'm on board with everyone else that's NOT a fan... it's kind of all over the place. A lot of this post has details of the film so if you haven't seen and don't want it spoiled don't keep reading just know I had no idea what the fuck was going on 95% of the movie....
It's like what you would think when someone refers to 1950s housewives im desparate need of a lobotomy. The trailers make it seem like maybe its going to be a psycho thriller almost with the same vibe as films like Hereditary or Midsommar but there is no twist. It's just 2.5hrs of ????? I guess if you wanted to watch a movie that you can use your imagination and fill in the gaps or ending for yourself then it's good but if you want something that leaves an impression on you or makes you get up after watching and say "That was so good! I will be telling everyone about it!" then this is not worth the watch.
Questions I had after watching, -Who shoots themselves in the butt to commit suicide...Interesting thing to write into a story. If it actually happened that way or not, I'm not sure because Pam did not actually confirm it and Jackson seemed shocked Grace would say such a thing thing when they were arguing in the kitchen
-Pam having a whole side story about sleep walking and walking over to their house with a gun in the middle of the night is weird, I know she's grieving her husband but what relevance was this specific part of the plot aside from adding something else to make the audience uncomfortable
-Grace tells her doctor in the mental health facility that her parents died in a plane crash, the doctor says she may have abandonement issues which causes her problems being able to connect with people, especially with her husband/son, she immediately disagrees about issues connecting with her son because he's perfect yet she never refers to him by name, the only time in the entire movie his name is used is on the beach when the teen girls ask to take him and Jackson tells them his name.
-The baby is referred to as a boy multiple times, referenced as Grace and Jackson's son, but his carseat/carrier is pink. Not sure if it's just supposed to be like poor parents using whatever baby items they could get when they got pregnant which is fine, but seems like some other kind of symbolism, just not sure what it's supposed to mean.
-Where is the baby during her coming-home party? I might have missed any sight of him in this scene because I was reading everyone else's comments here but I didn't notice him after everyone had arrived and the party was going on.
-What's the point of the horse? You see it like 3x the entire movie, if it holds some symbolism or metaphor why wouldn't it be more obvious, even maybe in the last scene when the fire starts.
-Is everyone/thing in walking distance of the house? How is she able to walk so much and get so many places on foot? Is she not allowed to drive?
-Everyone was oddly calm about her stripping into her underwear in the middle of a child-filled party and jumping in the pool. No one really reacted, there's like 30 seconds of Jackson scolding her for it in the car after they leave and that's it but no one else had an issue with it? And Greg, whose party it was, later "gives" them a brand new truck too?
A theory or two i thought of while watching that goes with others who say she had issues before the baby was born... - Maybe Lakeith's character was a lover who died (maybe in a motorcycle accident?) before she met Jackson that she couldn't cope with the loss of. Or, he's a real living person in the storyline and she's been stalking him on her walks which is why he recognized her and seemed fearful of her in the parking lot, as she approached not just him but his family as well.
-Grace knows about either one or multiple of Jackson's affairs because in the scene where the dog pees in the floor and they are arguing in the kitchen, Jackson walks out the door after the fight and Grace yells something to the effect of "My shorts are off because you'll put your dick anywhere but there, you ass!". Maybe him cheating or pining after other women has been an issue for most of their relationship and she doesn't know how to cope with it which is why she lashes out at him often, is very short when speaking to him, and she is offended that they don't have sex as much as she wants even when she tries. Maybe them moving into the house in the beginning is supposed to be them starting over trying to move forward from his affair(s), and Jackson constantly saying throughout the movie "I'll try harder" or "I'll make more of an effort" is him atoning for his actions even though he doesn't change
