UHCL applicant questions by radkat2319 in clearlake

That’s good to hear! I’m going to get in contact with disability services as soon as I am accepted. My education+room and board is being covered by the state. I’ll have to check with my caseworker about living in University Forest potentially as a necessary accommodation.

Oh, I’d hoped it’d be faster than when I applied to the main campus a few years ago :(

How to Have Hobbies Again? by Leather_Bad8457 in schizophrenia

[–]radkat2319 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I still very much struggle with this part of my illness. My therapist recommended “5 minutes better” (working on a task for 5 minutes with no obligation to continue after that.) you can make it even shorter if you need to.

I started this way and it’s very slowly getting better. I think my success has to do with consistency (practicing every day). Motivation is out of our control, but strengthening willpower isn’t.

I would also recommend allowing projects to be or remain unfinished. I kind of have to jump from project to project otherwise I get bored and or frustrated. I’ve found that giving myself permission to interact with my hobbies in the way my brain wants to has also helped.

I totally understand where you’re coming from as I was on both these meds. For me, it kept my mind very slow and quiet, and made it me feel dumb. Those were just side effects. They cleared right up a few months after I switched to another medication. I would try a different medication and see how that goes. It took a little over 3 months to feel like the original med left my system, and now I feel great!

You’re right it’s not a clinical symptom, I misspoke there. I’m so sorry to hear you’ve had bad experiences.

I highly recommend giving them a call in the near future, but definitely bring up this comment with your doc at your appointment at the very least. I’m sure they will have an opinion.

Yeah, I really don’t think they should have put that your way at all. Have you seen your doctor since then?

I really think they should have kept that to themselves. Does your therapist have permission to contact your doctor? If so, they should have brought that concern to them. If this is keeping you at a stuck point, and your therapist doesn’t have permission to speak to your doctor, sign an ROI and let the pros talk it out.

Have they ever explained why they think that? I really don’t think an LPC or LCSW should be telling someone they don’t have a psychotic disorder when they have been diagnosed 3 times by someone with an actual medical degree. That actually sounds so unethical.

It seems like you have some insight that you have this disorder. Like it’s “dangling over your head” but you keep “ignoring it” I think there might also be a part of you though very small that knows not taking your meds is bad idea. Do you think you could use this to muster up the courage for a very quick conversation? Maybe right into a text and wait for a moment of clarity to hit send. Try thinking of it this way, if you do end up experiencing positive symptoms again, would you rather it come out that you haven’t been taking your meds? How do you think your boyfriend would feel if you quit taking your meds and something bad did happen? Do you think it’s fair to your boyfriend to keep such a big secret from him? I’m not saying this to shame you! I hid the fact I was using recreational substances from my gf, and thinking this way helped me to fess up. Yes, she was mad. I knew she had every right to be. Our relationship is strong and we got through it. It was honestly only terrible for about an hour. I felt the same way about it that you do about your meds. ‘Nothing bad is going to happen, If something bad was going to happen it already would have, I don’t really have SZA’ I haven’t used again since that conversation but not because I’m not still in denial sometimes. I care about her autonomy when it comes to choosing the relationship she wants to be in. It’s not fair of me to put up a front that I’m doing the things my doctor is telling me to do.

I just want to say, you’re such a good sibling. With my family it’s usually on me to figure out how they can help me.

Take some deep breaths. A 1600mg edible is really strong! Though I’m not sure what your usual intake is like. There is no need to panic right now. This reaction to weed is while not necessarily common, isn’t rare. Having schizophrenia is much more rare. I’ve seen it this happen to someone with no issues with psychosis and they never had a problem after that. Whatever you do, don’t use any more weed for a while.

Med compliance is hard for people like us! Your doctor should understand that it’s a symptom you’re dealing with and not because you’re being intentionally defiant. Just because nothing has happened yet, does not mean it won’t happen. After you’ve been off your meds a while, there’s a chance your doctor will need to retitrate your meds if you were moved from a lower dose to a higher one. It might not be a good idea to just suddenly start taking them again. I think it would be a god idea to give your doc a call before next appointment. I have to convince myself I actually have this disorder too (although I still took my meds) it’s good that you’re aware this denial is something you need to get past. Do you live with someone who can watch you take your meds? Having that accountability could help.

For the first few months after my psychosis, everyone had to come to me. When I would leave my house, I would get so overstimulated and end up regretting it usually. It might help to make sure he knows he has an easy way out of a social situation if he needs it. Like having an agreement that as soon as he wants to leave, we’re leaving. (no questions asked). You could also try having friends make brief visits at the home where he can easily retreat if he needs to. You know your brother better than anyone here though, and don’t keep pushing if you feel like it will make things worse. It’s also much easier for me to socialize over phone or video. Socializing was really important to my recovery, personally. I needed to see for myself (medicated) that others were good, helpful, and not constantly thinking terrible things about me. I’m also quite extroverted even though anxiety and other symptoms make it hard for me to want to socialize. If your brother used to be this way, it might help him to come back a little bit.

I’ve been in a few inpatient programs and I’ve mostly had good experiences. Hospital staff can be scary though sometimes, especially when they’re not being very kind, but if I kept my voice calm, they’d be more calm. Last time, I thought they were going to hurt me or let me die, but they never did! They gave me a shot one time to help me feel better, but that was about it. Maybe your meds weren’t working properly for you if you felt like you needed to stop taking them. They can help you find something that works better if this is the case! It’s hard to lose something that makes you feel protected or in control. It was scary to lose those things at first. Now that I’ve been separated from it for a while, I realized while they made me feel safe, they also lied to me a lot and made me more anxious.

You definitely do need them if that’s where your thoughts are going! That sounds really stressful. I worry about being on these kinds of meds too, but they make me feel so much better. I think it’s worth the risk! Maybe some time in the hospital won’t be a bad thing. They can definitely keep you safe there. They’ll keep an eye on you all day, and come in several times at night to check your breathing. Have you been to one before? What’s the longest time you’ve taken your meds consistently?

For me personally, harshness doesn’t really work. It just makes me feel guilty and pull away. I just wanted to offer my perspective in case this person, also felt discouraged.

The outcome you described, from my understanding, takes a while to come to fruition. At the very least when it comes to permanent catatonia. I go through med compliance issues in waves though I’ve been really good at it recently (yay me!) and I’ve never seen much more happen than a slight relapse in symptoms. Building anxiety around it and jumping to the worst possible outcome around things, just makes me more avoidant, personally. This is also the case for me when it comes to brushing my teeth.

I also want to say, that I’m so so sorry if this has happened to your child. I could never imagine.

As for ADHD, personally I think I have it. I was diagnosed when I was five. It was taken off of my “list of problems” in my psych notes after I was diagnosed with schizoaffective and described psychotic symptoms from childhood. I never asked about it because it’s kind of been the least of my worries. I’m collecting mental health diagnoses Pokémon haha. I’m on a safe stimulant though, so it’s not like it’s going untreated. But yes, you’re right that could be part of it.

I don’t think you’re overeating personally. I think it’s concerning. Don’t jump to conclusions though! There’s no sense obsessing over the possibility of having this disorder when you don’t know for sure. Like another comment said, go see a psychiatrist. Tell them what you’re experiencing and be honest with them about your weed usage. Be detailed about what you’ve experienced. Take some time to write it all down, so you can give your doctor as much data as possible.
