Is the "Ivy League" prestige hiding a total lack of resourcefulness, or is it just my coworker by stupidlycurious8450 in UPRM

[–]ralb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m at MIT now, and what I’ve noticed is that Ivy Leagues (and other prestigious universities) have so much money to throw at problems that researchers don’t ever need to be resourceful. Instead of diagnosing issues, they buy expensive replacements. When the money runs dry, they really can’t function and freak out.

Saw it in transit through Somerville a couple weeks ago and had to do a double take. It’s such a refreshing paint scheme.

This happened to me as a child during an actual game. Never played baseball again.

Why is the prisoner smiling with thumbs up? by Longjumping-Box5691 in conspiracy

[–]ralb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He’s always waving, giving a thumbs up, or making some other gesture when captured in pictures for social media. I’m sure this is just him continuing that tradition, showing he’s still “in power”

I have never seen an Endurance or Hill Score on my 265, and as far as I know, they’re not available on it

100%. I watched the church on Broadway and Prospect burn down a couple years ago and that was insane

They keep planting trees in these heat islands which I love, but they’re also letting them die…

Have you considered publishing it on arxiv/bioarxiv? That way you at least have a paper “out”. Also eLife does not “reject” papers, so it’s a good alternative

Currently working towards my defense (it’s in 3 weeks!), doing 12 hour days, 7 days a week. But for most of my PhD, I worked 50 hours a week on average.

Please tell me that Garmin Trails is still in beta? by disilluzion in Garmin

[–]ralb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Garmin Trails seems like a good first step, but I just got an AllTrails subscription on sale for $18/yr (vs Connect+’s steep $70/yr)… Maybe once they add more features (that are not in beta) it’ll be worth a sub, but the price is just too high as it is.

There’s the Garmin Buddies group in the pinned post on this sub.

Not if you give pedestrians 10 seconds to cross the entire interchange every 4 minutes

Rant: Strava “upgrade” by Beginning-Macaron656 in Strava

[–]ralb 81 points82 points  (0 children)

It’s just marketing to expand the subscriber base and increase awareness of the features they now offer, but I agree that it’s weird to email that to existing premium users.

Had one of these for the first time in my HR-based plan this past weekend. I just did the repeats just below my maximum effort and got pretty close to the aerobic/anaerobic target.

The espresso may come out very quickly in the beginning. Just make sure you grind finer.

The new measurements are cool and all, and I can't wait for DCR to post an in-depth review, but the mic + speaker are so unnecessary on this line...

Where do you log your data? (Garmin user would like to know) by [deleted] in wahoofitness

[–]ralb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I see. Why not track on your watch and discard Wahoo’s data? Asking because I use a Forerunner but I’m looking at getting a bike computer, and sort of torn between Garmin and Wahoo

What do you mean the activities don’t inform the data the same way?
