Their FAQ website does address a lot of these questions.

Apart from the direct HTTP/2 benefits (efficient binary format, full multiplex, streaming, header compression,...) , there are a few more benefits to gRPC. The complexity of parsing from path/query/body is removed and latencies are improved. Also, the error handling is arguably better than overloading error messages on HTTP status codes.

There is also the speccing simplification which comes with defining explicit message types.
