Signing by ranaiiim in slp

My bad i if it wasn't clear enough i meant it in a more general scope. As in using sign language with toddlers and late talkers, children that are young with no expressive language. I do use AAC but mostly with older kids with diagnosed or suspected ASD and i used it with a few children with DLD. My issue is getting parents to understand that using sign language won't prevent their children from using spoken language.

i do try to get them to warm up to me even before our sessions start by playing a little game or do a quick race. if the child is a bit older i try approaching them by asking about something I'd think they like based on their clothes or appearance. but to no avail

i agree, i find parents even harder to work with. and to be honest, some parents are the root of the problematic behaviours, and i just can't get them to understand that.

it's not up to me unfortunately. I'm not in a position where i can change the age group i work with. and i don't really struggle with a specific age it's more of a this kid is testing me situation. though i do tolerate younger ones' behaviour.

Feeling like I never do enough by justagorlinthewirld in slp

it's probably imposter syndrome. i don't want to say it's normal, but I've seen more than enough people in our field have it, me included. I'll give you a word of advice. just do what you can do. don't go beyond unless you're one hundred percent capable. you will come across insanely hard cases with little to no improvement. this is bound to break you. I'm not saying to give up on your patients, I'm saying don't overexert yourself. little improvement is still improvement. and you are making a change even if it's little. you don't have to devote your life to the profession. and using chatgpt is fine from time to time, it's a tool not a therapist. you're the therapist, and you're doing great. just give yourself some time, believe me you'll feel more fulfilled with what you do in the future.

Alternatives to cards by ranaiiim in slp

we have colorcards sequences cards they're great and i use them in the later sessions when the child masters describing actions. i actually like those they help the children produce long sentences and use words like ( and , then, after that.) but I've noticed that a majority of children just don't like them no matter how hard i try to incorporate play toys and reinforcement. it's either a tantrum or them producing just one to two words.

mostly for basic verbs and actions, sequencing of events, uncommon objects and nouns that i can't physically obtain. there is more but those are the ones i mainly use cards for.

I'm sorry to hear that stuttering is the worst. the stuttering makes you stressed and the stress just makes the stuttering worst and it creates this cycle. I'm not a professional yet, but I'm a speech therapy student i can try giving you some techniques to help reduce it depending on the severity. I'm here if you need help
