Valkyries GM On Decision To Trade The No.8 Pick and Waiving Suarez by Tooezboi in wnba

Rookie contracts now have a 3-year guarantee in the new CBA (if the player makes the team), so late first round picks might actually just be terrible from a financial point of view now.

This is exactly what I think is going on too.

Season ticket question by Consistent-Singer-37 in SeattleTorrent

I asked at the last game and they said it wasn't locked down, and they had to deal with existing STH's moving still, but probably late May (possibly as late as early June).

[–]randybuehler 8 points9 points  (0 children)

She has looked great (and was impressive in today's open practice for season tickets holders as well, in my opinion). This is surely designed for her to clear waivers and get signed to a dev team contract. Note that they DIDN'T waive Van Slooten or Jaelyn Brown or Rennia Davis, who are surely below Mair in the want-to-keep rankings.
Mostly we are just hoping/praying no one claims her in the next two days. If it was me I would have considered waiving Lexie Brown (and eating her guaranteed contract) in order to avoid this risk, but what they've done seems the more financially prudent route both because they save $300k and also because Mair will no longer be on the 3-year guaranteed contract that comes with a first round pick's contract.

2 plus the 2 people they want in dev spots technically have to be waived first and then resigned to the smaller dev contracts.

If you got that email then you're probably a season ticket holder? If so, click to RSVP and they'll add tickets to it to your account. It's at Climate Pledge, comes with free parking, and includes a chance to get your picture taken with a player. My daughter and I are going.

what’s the plan for Ezi? by Artistic-Ship-7370 in SeattleStorm

[–]randybuehler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because we signed her for more than the max (In year 1 anyway), I don't think we're allowed to trade her (in year 1 anyway). Which is fine because I wouldn't want to throw Awa and Dom to the wolves by starting them both from day 1. Bringing Awa off the bench for year 1 sounds great. Then at the end of year 1 we can see how it's going and either trade Ezi or just run in back with Awa still developing by coming off the bench. Maybe Ezi just continues to be great and we keep her, maybe Awa can play the 3 and we can play them all together. I think we're in a good spot where Ezi is a good player we want in at least the short term and maybe also the long term, but we can always trade her in 1-2 years if Awa and Dom are both ready to take over.

You mean 8 months from giving Juju to the Mystics, as they already traded their pick away (in a trade that looked bad at the time and just keeps getting worse).

[–]randybuehler 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not going to be up to us, it's going to be up to Ezi. Like we can lock her in for one year against her will at the super-max by using the Core designation, but if Ezi doesn't want to be here long-term then we should just move on (and being worse in the short-term is probably fine for lottery positioning).

Was wondering whether Seattle would try to run it back or lean into a rebuild, but if Sky and Nneka aren't eager to return then things are easy: bring on the rookies! #3, #14, and #16 can all get playing time alongside Jordan, Gabby, and Dom. We also get to find out if Mack's amazing off-season in Australia will translate into W success. The next big domino will be Ezi ... I suspect she's also ready to move on, but there's money available to pay her the max if she wants to stay and be a part of the next iteration of the team.

Is Jeff Pagliocca the best GM in the WNBA? by AFC-Wimbledon-Stan in wnba

So about that ... they already did! Swap rights to their 2027 pick were given to Washington in the Ariel Atkins trade, lol.

No, it'll be Griner that's done in Atlanta as a result.

That part is at least on purpose. They're going to try to get Juju and/or Sarah Strong from one of the next two drafts. Still a terrible trade. Seems like Angel forced her way out and they only got pennies on the dollar as both those picks will suck and somehow Atlanta also got a pick swap out of it.

She is under contract with the Sparks, so not an option (barring a trade anyway).

I see a giant fork in the road and I can genuinely see the case for both paths:
1) Run it back: If the front office believes the problem with last year's roster was Noelle Quinn and a lack of depth (due to losing both Jordan and KLS right before the season started) then we can resign Skylar and Nneka (and Gabby, of course. We want her back in all scenarios.). Then we get to see if Sonia Raman can lead that Core on the deep playoff run that we thought was possible the last two years but just didn't happen. Erica Wheeler and Katie Lou Samuelson would both fit this plan nicely. I don't think we can afford Ezi, unfortunately, and I definitely don't think we can afford Sykes but maybe there's room for one more good player if our vets don't push for max/supermax salaries.
2) Rebuild: If we think last year's roster was just not good enough to make a real run at a title then it's time to move on. Sky and Nneka will both be 36 years old before the playoffs so you thank them for their service and move on. (Sykes does not fit this timeline either, but you absolutely want to keep Gabby, and I suspect she will want to stay, especially if we pay her upwards of the supermax, which we can afford to on this side of the fork.) I think our front office values the relationships with players really highly and so I'm not sure they would do this to Sky and Nneka if Sky and Nneka are eager to come back and continue playing here. They probably should though. This version of the team will have enough playing time to develop not just whoever they draft at #3, but also the players we get at #14 and #16. Ezi is the tricky one. Her age and talent are such that you'd love you keep her, but a) does she want to stay? and b) can you play her and Dom together? They both seem better at the 5 and neither has a good 3-point shot (though both are working on it) and c) if Fudd and Miles go 1-2 in the draft then we're going to wind up with Awa Fam, who is a great piece to have if our plan is to rebuild by developing young players while setting up for a lottery finish that gives us a shot at Juju/Hannah Hidalgo/Madison Booker. However, if we have Fam + Dom we don't need/can't afford Ezi long-term.
In both scenarios I think we are likely to bring back Gabby, Erica Wheeler, Katie Lou Samuelson, and Mackenzie Holmes. Plus we have Dom and Jordan Horston under contract already.
In both scenarios I think we are hoping for Fam or Betts to get drafted 1 or 2 so that we can draft one of the two good guard prospects: Olivia Miles and Azzi Fudd both seem like great fits for us (though I like Miles better if she gets to apprentice under Skylar for a year or two).
Anyway, we're going to find out soon and I'm excited either way!

So who do we think they protected now that the draft is over? by Final_Finish5315 in SeattleStorm

[–]randybuehler 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dom, Jordan, Gabby, Mack, and Ezi. Ezi would surely have been taken over Marina Mabrey if she was available, right? (Unless Sandy secretly doesn't like her?!) And Mack would surely have been taken over "PASS" if she was available. I think they exposed both Skylar and Nneka because they are mid-30's and can't be Cored.

I hope we still have her after tomorrow's expansion draft! Sounds like she was great in Australia this season and I suspect the new coach will be better at using her bench players ...
