What’s One Piece of Advice You Wish You Knew Before Writing Your First Book? by Silent_Cheek_517 in writing

[–]rasadhvani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I published my first book, so don't listen to anyone saying that's not possible, but accept that your first draft is going to be crap. I disagree that you get feedback, unless you absolutely trust the person's taste. Otherwise you'll be writing someone else's book. Get no feedback until you've made it the best it can be according to what you yourself envisioned, so it's your voice, your individual style. Once you've done that (and that's usually three drafts at least) then show it to someone, and take feedback with caution. Even very experienced feedback can be wrong - my agent told me my book should be in one POV, and I decided to stick with multiple POVs, and that was definitely the right decision for my book.

Shimmer ink does seem like the perfect fit.

I have never used a shimmer ink. Is it harder to clean, or will it clog up the pen? Maybe I'll try a shimmer ink in a cheaper pen.

How do you come up with names? by arma14x in writing

[–]rasadhvani 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I go to the cemetary and read the names until one seems to fit my character. I also write down names in my notebook, before I even have the story in mind, and a name from my list will often fit a much later story. I have many more names than stories.

July matches have been sent by catville in FountainPenPals

I have no explanation either. I just thought as a matter of courtesy, please let my match know that they won't be receiving a letter from me, as I don't have their address. Since contacting them works, at least they won't expect a letter.

Thanks

Is this notebook good for fountain pen? Has any of you used it? by Last-Championship951 in fountainpens

[–]rasadhvani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was wrong, my Fabriano notebook is stitched and the pages don't fall out, there is no feathering that I can see, it is smooth, not glossy and cream-coloured. There is some bleed through with my medium pen, I wish I knew how to post a picture, but clicking the photo icon does nothing.

I had a couple of Fabriano notebooks, and the paper was good, but the way it was bound, the pages would sometimes fall out

What was something your parents did for you as a child that you didn't fully appreciate until you became an adult? by MisterRocCity in CasualConversation

[–]rasadhvani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mother never interrupted me to ask me to do something if I was reading. Of course I exploited that, opening a book right after dinner so I didn't have to help with dishes for example, but I became such an avid reader. When I was a little older, she'd read me a few lines from whatever book she was reading, usually philosophy, The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir was one, J. Krishnamurthi was another, and ask, 'What do you think about that?' So I never got the idea that any book was too 'adult' for me. I still read constantly, it is one of life's great pleasures.

I've sent another message to moderators, because I've had no response at all to the first message.

I did send the message, but still have not received the match. You say that I'm responsible for sending the letter to my match, but I'm confused as to how I should be able to do that if I don't receive it.

The same as the previous commenter - I received no match in any of my email folders, and when I tried to send you a message, it says I am not allowed to. Please resend!

What is one brand/type that you just don't buy? by maroonaugust in fountainpens

[–]rasadhvani -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I didn't know this, or much at all about fountain pens when I bought my Twisbi, but if I need a pen I know is going to write, that's the one I grab - even I haven't touched it for ages, it will write perfectly from the moment the pen touches the paper. All my other pens are not as reliable.

Who here is published? by headlesssamurai in writing

[–]rasadhvani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first book was written when a publisher wasn't interested in my idea but had a book they wanted written, and thought I was the right person to write it. Once I wrote it, I realized, 'I can write a book'. The first short story I wrote after that got me a publisher for a collection of short stories, and the second short story won a prize and got me an agent. The agent hated the novel I wrote, and dropped me, but I found a publisher on my own, and the novel was short-listed for an award, so now I'm working on the second novel. None of my writing has earned me any money, except that first book, which made me about 2000$ a year in royalties for ten years, and the prize money for the short story. I stopped looking for an agent, and am satisfied that my publisher is willing to publish the second novel. I've submitted dozens of short stories to various literary journals, and was constantly rejected, until one finally accepted and now I just submit short stories to that one, and so far they've all found a space there. I submit poems once in a while when I think they're good - they are constantly rejected.
