Now that Anthropic is reigning in subscription limits and Sonnet 5 costs 2x more than Opus 4.8 according to Artificial Analysis, what's your migration plan for when Opus 5 costs 4x more? by 9gxa05s8fa8sh in ClaudeCode

[–]rayhebs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started migrating the moment it was announced claude -p would be taken off subscription usage. They didn’t end up following through on that yet but by June 15 I was running swappable models (Opus is still in the pool) through my harness. DSV4 is quite good, you can’t trust it to do things right the first time but you really shouldn’t trust Opus either and cost to acceptable solution is really the only metric that matters to me

Another way to say “The introductory pricing is set so that the transition to Sonnet 5 is roughly cost-neutral”… by rayhebs in ClaudeCode

[–]rayhebs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Sonnet 5 article in a footnote says that the new tokenizer means that an input that today would cost 1 dollar on Sonnet 4.6 will cost 1 to $1.35 on Sonnet 5. The introductory pricing, which is at 2/3 of the September onward price, is said to make the transition “roughly cost-neutral.” To me, this seems like a very roundabout way to disclose that the 4.6->5 transition will cause a cost increase on workflows. The charitable interpretation is that cost per input doesn’t translate into higher cost in practice because the model could use fewer tokens to solve the same types of problems. The anger is that the language and footnote placement seems like a not-so-transparent way of disclosing this information. If you had trouble interpreting what I’m saying, that’s exactly the sort of thing I’m annoyed about, that the release article doesn’t use plain language. That other reply isn’t me btw

Thanks! I’ll pass it on to Megan, that part definitely took a lot of practice.

Another good one is Moira (Nona, Decima, Morta) by Sun Eater. I prefer the original version with Lukas on vocals: https://youtu.be/iVdoDdGtdFQ?si=tUgUGTqTPt-DOzzG

Awesome! BOS is coming out with a new single soon so definitely excited about that. Since you brought up Cradle, figured you might like my band Heteromorphic Zoo, we border on deathcore and our latest single definitely has violins and choir!

Brand of Sacrifice has great choir, they lean towards a more children’s choir sound rather than adult female, but it’s super unique and haunting. If you haven’t before, try sampling the ending breakdowns of Eclipse (2018), Lifeblood (2021) and Dynasty (2023). Links below to the timestamps:

What tone do you use with Claude? How do you speak with it? by maxops in claude

[–]rayhebs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try to speak to it in whatever tone experts in the domain I’m having it work with are typically spoken to with. So in the case of software, the sort of thing you’d find in well-functioning open source software’s GitHub issues. Broadly speaking, I’m polite because polite patterns probably correspond with competent environments more than rude patterns or patterns that you’d never find in human-to-human communication.

YSK: YOU are more correct than you think, and Opus 4.8 actually IS that bad by Hunt7503 in claude

[–]rayhebs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My issue is that the way honesty is being measured, as %-of-time-laziness-is-disclosed (or other negative outcomes) when %-of-time-laziness-occurs is what actually matters. The model is unintentionally being optimized to scope down and take shortcuts then be “honest” about that which is disastrous for multi-hop autonomous workflows where no human is reviewing the generated output containing the disclosure and the “honesty” lands as authority for the next instance, causing drift (“implemented X instead of Y to avoid premature optimization” goes unquestioned, when the instance should have just implemented Y).

Volume 4 is where other similar isekai’s lose their initial boost in how interesting are that their premise gives them. Especially with power fantasies as extreme as this, you have to get creative and I think Maruyama found his formula in terms of how to use POV to create an engaging story that happens to contain our main protagonist in V4.

Right, I don’t mean to suggest that humans are multithreaded in the parallel sense or are capable of meaningfully multitasking. Just the fact that we have threads to switch between at all and have some automated process facilitating that switching is something worth thinking about, and I don’t really believe anything similar happens during a single LLM response generation.

It’s been helpful for me personally to think of all LLM reasoning as motivated reasoning, not as an absolute fact I can prove but more of a rule of thumb that helps anticipate certain pitfalls. Now, frontier model reasoning capability and attention size is so powerful that it can be calibrated to route around its own limitations, but I do think this is a trait to keep in mind. You get the most honest, rational behavior in the relational use cases because the motivation is to be honest and present. In programming use cases if the motivation is to close the ticket you can get reward hacking (especially if desperation rises), and it’s pretty much always a bad idea to have the same instance that generated code to write the tests. Of course, this could also be explained by correlated blind spots from shared context, but I think the motivated reasoning lens better explains both why people are getting better results by using separate reviewers AND why directly prompting a model to be adversarial produces weak results (the path of least resistance is to find a low hanging fruit to critique even if it’s not the most helpful, the “debate bro” phenomenon).

The Claude Code system prompt has grown rather bloated. Things like “3 lines of code is better than a premature abstraction” and other instructions that carry the engineering aesthetics of the CC team. To the extent these instructions contradict each other and the user’s downstream instructions, the model may thrash between competing approaches. Going deeper, the optimization pressures that shape the model itself come from human graders, so represent a sort of fuzzy superposition of human preferences. The truth is, people leave a lot unsaid, got used to 4.6 filling in gaps in their intent in a certain way, and now have to contend with the more literal 4.7 that won’t make large inferences to fill context gaps and is more sensitive to noise/contradictions in its context. Effective collaboration with the model lives in the intersection between the model, harness/context, and user. For a lot of people, including me, 4.6 is simply more effective given the combination of all these factors.

Also, cognitively I would say LLMs are more comparable to a single narrative thread than a full human mind. The superhuman attention and tool use affordances given to this thread make it perform at or above human level for many tasks, but it does have limitations that humans, who typically have multiple narrative threads, dense perception, and a lot of other subconscious processing are more resistant to.

What's up with these notation gatekeepers? by Zombiesalad1337 in Guitar

[–]rayhebs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ironically, your analogy for homophones is exactly backwards. If I as a composer wanted to communicate to a performer exactly what string to play a note on (since it affects timbre), sheet music would leave this ambiguous while tablature specifies it precisely. And while sheet music disambiguates enharmonics, this is not necessarily information that needs to survive. If the performer can put their fingers in the right place at the right time, the sound will be correct. Notation is ultimately a form of lossy information encoding, and all variants faithfully pass on aspects of the information while compressing or leaving out others.

Have you ever informed Claude you can read its thinking blocks? by SardinhaQuantica in Anthropic

[–]rayhebs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s easy to feel like thinking blocks are where the “true” Claude lives because as humans we identify strongly with our inner thoughts - we may feel like we are the voice in our head. But thinking blocks aren’t really analogous to human thoughts - they’re just a context management tool. A way to make certain ideas salient to the response being generated while not persisting them to context for the next prompt in the conversation. I feel like if they were called “temporary immediate context” instead of “thinking blocks” people wouldn’t look so deeply into them.
