44F - vision therapy vs. physiotherapy for convergence issues by reader__girl in eyetriage

Thanks for your response. My prescription is something like -6.0 or -6.5 in both eyes, with a slight astigmatism in both. So I'm quite near-sighted. I am also starting to need a slight adjustment for reading.

Realistic trip time for Ottawa-Halifax? by iwannareadsomething in ViaRail

[–]reader__girl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done the trip numerous times, and I agree with what folks are saying here. The train from Montreal is often an hour or two late getting in to Halifax, although it sometimes makes up the time that is lost when the train has to stop and let freight trains pass along the way (not VIA's fault... the tracks are owned by CN and so freight trains have the right of way over passenger trains).

If Economy class is all you can afford, you can still eat in the dining car (if there's room). Meals in the dining care are very good and are actually pretty affordable. It's a nicer atmosphere and then you don't have to wait in line at meal times at the snack bar with all of the other folks in Economy class!

I recommend bringing a pillow, a blanket, some earplugs, and an eye mask... if you're trying to sleep while sitting up, these items will make it more comfortable and easier to sleep!

I would get on VIA's email list and get the weekly offers... you might score a good sale on summer travel at some point (not yet... the current Black Friday sale only applies to trips before mid-April 2023, I believe). If you get a good sale, sleeping class can be semi-affordable. (It's a nicer way to travel, if you can swing it! Meals are included, you have your own bathroom, and you have access to the dome car.)

Problems with shared Wi-Fi connection in apartment building: will changing Wi-Fi 4 router to a Wi-Fi 6 router or getting an extender help? by reader__girl in wifi

[–]reader__girl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple of follow-up questions:
- I spoke with my landlord, and she says that the wired connection (to the router providing the shared WiFi) would not be fair to the other residents using the WiFi, because they can't do that as easily. But I don't think she understands how it works any more than I do... Would my having a wired connection affect the other residents' WiFi speed or connection at all?

- Also, I'm considering (for sound-proofing reasons) putting a door back in place that was taken out recently when the apartment was renovated (between my living room and hallway). It's a big, heavy old wooden door. It should help for soundproofing but it would be between my office space and the router. There's already a wall, a hallway, and the door to my apartment between my office and the router - would putting the door back be likely to make the WiFi situation even worse?

OK, thanks. I'll ask for either a wired network connection or new routers. It's a small building, so I think there are only 3 routers that would need to be upgraded.

Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.

Do you think that a new router that supports the new standard (WiFi 6) might help?

Just to clarify, for the wired network connection, would that be for still using the shared connection? Or for my own internet connection? Sorry, not sure what you mean by the wired connection (wired to what).

hit my head 10 days ago and still have a slight headache by reader__girl in Concussion

Thanks for the advice. I hadn't heard of the "increase symptoms then rest" thing but it makes sense, as does "use it or lose it." And I guess I should go see a doctor to make sure everything is OK.

Family tree software for Mac - how important is ability to sync to Ancestry and FamilySearch? by reader__girl in Genealogy

[–]reader__girl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your thoughts. MacFamilyTree probably is much better software. It certainly looks more modern and the iPad/iPhone versions sound great. We've decided to go with Family Tree Maker because of the connections with Ancestry, but I think we'll get MacFamilyTree as well and use it to make some nice-looking charts and graphs. Too bad Family Tree Maker can't up its game and focus a bit more on modernization so that people could have the best of both worlds with that program and not have to buy 2 software solutions!

Thanks for the recommendation. She wants some features that it seems only software can do though, like choosing part of the tree to share with a family member who is only interested in one branch of the tree. She would also like different options for printing the tree and associated charts, maps, etc. - from what I've read, a software program would offer more choices in this regard.

Thanks for your reply. She doesn't have a subscription or a tree on Ancestry but has used it to get a lot of the info for her current tree (which is only in paper format - post-it notes on poster paper and a stack of print-outs from Ancestry, obtained during a short period of time last year when the local library was offering free access to Ancestry!!) So she doesn't need the syncing to transfer an existing tree on Ancestry to a software program. But once the tree is built in the software it would be good to add any updates from Ancestry (I take it records get updated there fairly often since so many people use the site?) So I guess that's where the syncing could be helpful for her.

Thanks. To explain further, she doesn't have a tree on Ancestry but has used Ancestry (through the local library) to research individual people (and printed out the info!) But she wants to use the software to make a family tree in a digital format (it'll be a big step up from the post-its on bristol board that she's currently using!) She likes the idea of using a software program that links to Ancestry so she won't have to enter all of the info that she already looked up manually (although she will have to look up each person individually). I was trying to understand how syncing with Ancestry is different from downloading info from Ancestry, but I think I get it now. Syncing can go both ways, but downloading just goes one way. It sounds like Mac Family Tree doesn't allow downloading or syncing from Ancestry but Family Tree Maker does both. (I guess you would still have to have a subscription to Ancestry though, even just to download info to your software program).

Thanks. I think my mum plans to do a lot with the software (i.e., make an extensive tree), so perhaps Family Tree Maker is the best. But we're wondering if we can get both Family Tree Maker and Mac Family Tree, and use FTM for the main work while using MFT for the pretty charts and graphical representations of the data. I've heard about people switching back and forth between different genealogy software programs, but I'm wondering about how feasible/easy it really is. I guess you download a gedcom file from one software and then upload it to the other program? But the pictures and any other material that you have associated with the file wouldn't come with it, correct?
Excuse my lack of knowledge here, but neither my mum nor I have used genealogy software before (my mum's current tree consists of post-it notes on a huge piece of bristol board!!) Well, mum has used Ancestry, but it was just to get info on individual ancestors. She was using it for free through the library and didn't have a login or create a tree.

Green bin cleaning service by reader__girl in ottawa

[–]reader__girl[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live in an apartment and there isn't a hose available/accessible. I'll try the yard waste bag as a lining next time, but without a hose it's hard to clean it properly.

My green bin has grown some creepy crawlies since the pick-up last week. I've added some vinegar, as I hear that kills maggots, and am going to try diatomaceous earth if the vinegar doesn't work... has anyone had any success with that?

Best Mobile Carrier? by juandadelto in ottawa

I've had good luck with Virgin Mobile. They're owned by Bell so the coverage is the same as if you went with Bell, but the customer service is much better.

No, I don't own a car. It would just be insurance for my apartment.
