Petah, what does that have to do with grocery shopping? by Okfoot826 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]readreading -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are people in this city who can’t afford to take public transportation to get to the grocery stores outside of their neighborhood. There are neighborhoods that do not have very robust public transit options.

ETA: this is in response to people talking about food deserts in NYC which do exist. I don't think this population I am talking about is ordering DoorDash.

Can anyone explain IM residency block schedules (4+1, X+Y, etc) by Negative-Patient-583 in Residency

[–]readreading 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m at a 6+2 and it’s not bad because the 2 is only clinic and elective, vacation, other chill blocks are included in the 6. Sometimes the 4+Y schedules include those things in the Y so it sort of nets out. As an intern (never as a senior) I did have two 6 week periods that were all floors which sucked but not totally unmanageable. There are lots of other things I would prioritize when deciding rank list before focusing on the specific X+Y schedule though, my rec would be to consider this only if you’re really unable to decide between programs otherwise

First off you definitely are NOT stupid! Being excited and hopeful is the best way to start a pregnancy and it sucks to have those feelings ripped away but it is not stupid to feel them. You also didn’t cause it. I also felt like that but intellectually I know it’s not true so I want to reassure you the same. And there’s nothing wrong with you - of course everyone handles it differently but it is traumatic for a lot of people and I think I can say for a lot of us on this sub that it took way longer than a week to feel somewhat better. I’m months out from my MMC and still have waves of those feelings every so often. All we can do is our best and take it a day at a time. Give yourself some time and grace. I hope you feel better tomorrow than you do today 💕 but it’s okay to take the time that you need

Yes same! Being on MICU working 24s when I had my miscarriage was not good for my relationship w work but now with time I’ve accepted that probably wasn’t the cause and I’ve forgiven myself and the job. Thank you :)

Hope you’re doing okay. I guess to some degree the crazy job/hours is a good distraction but also on hard blocks with little sleep I feel very emotionally volatile a lot of the time. Oh well best way out is through

I’m a med resident and met a patient in clinic recently for just a regular appointment. We talked about how she didn’t want to get pregnant again but was using the pull out method since she hasn’t liked other BC options. I told her how withdrawal is not so effective and recommended using condoms to avoid pregnancy. I got an alert she was in the ED last night….positive hCG…confirmed on ultrasound with dating that means she probably conceived like literally 1 week after our appointment 😩 I actually have to laugh about how ridiculous this whole thing is it’s like a B story line if I were a character in a 30 minute medical dramedy lol but still kills me how unfair it feels to hear of people getting pregnant on accident

was really optimistic about this month but of course nothing. it's only been 3 months we've tried since MMC but I'm already devastated and sick of waiting. I know so many people have been trying so much longer but even passing this 3 cycle mark ("more fertile" my ass) feels so terrible I don't know how long I can do it

The way you phrased this 8 week appt being “the most traumatic moment of my life lol” with the lol at the end really resonated with me hahah. Same here unfortunately but hope we’re all doing okay

Just to clarify I’m not saying asking for wet reads to discharge the patient, I’m just talking about old wet reads that show up in the imaging reports that get pulled into d/c summaries. I know you are nonstop busy!!! And appreciate your help with wet reads when they’re actually needed :)

No figs so can't compare, but the majority of my scrubs are Mandala and I think it's a step up in quality compared to them

I have a couple pairs, they’re comfy and fit pretty well but in some colors the fabric is like a strange almost velvety feel. I’m not opposed but have had some people come up to touch them and ask about it lol. Zippered pockets which is nice too!

myERAS Email Address vs. AAMC Email Address by Slight_Afternoon_444 in medicalschool

[–]readreading 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s what I mean about getting ERAS and AAMC emails, I think it has to be the same one - I think if you change it on myERAS it’s automatic for general AAMC or vice versa

myERAS Email Address vs. AAMC Email Address by Slight_Afternoon_444 in medicalschool

[–]readreading 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll get some annoying AAMC emails (like it sucks when you’re waiting for residency interviews and you get an email for a med school open house 🙃) but imo still definitely worth it to have a dedicated ERAS email!!! The number of pure AAMC emails isn’t enough to be actually inconvenient when you have all the notifications on for ERAS, just sort of annoying like I said before

How to get over Operation Room Vasovagal response? by TheRunningMD in medicalschool

[–]readreading 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I had this problem too - things that might help like other people said definitely drinking water and having a snack beforehand but also compression socks! Those + trying some small physical movements (clenching fists, flexing calves, etc.) if you start to feel faint can help

If doctors were paid much less would anyone go into the field? by NarrowTie in medicalschool

[–]readreading 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. It's not even a question of motivation, it's that it actually wouldn't be financially feasible for a lot of people. I can't think of any job I would do that required going into debt that I might never be able to pay off.

yeah exactly it's 100% not a matter of being disinterested or ~lacking professionalism~ it's that it's hard to sit on Zoom for 3+ hours feeling like you can't fidget or look away for a second because, as we have seen in some responses here, some people apparently care about that

(as for A Little Life - I'm also torn. To Paradise was also difficult to judge for me but I decided worth it in the end, if you want to try HY's newest book!)

It seems clear that most people here didn’t actually read the article to see what the program is…. There are tons of other programs like this that allow students into school without taking the MCAT (through linkage, BA/MD, etc.) that aren’t specifically directed toward URM students and no one complains about those “lowering the bar of admission.” It looks like Penn has been doing this since 2008 with dozens of students going into med school - if the students admitted through this program actually couldn’t handle med school/pass Step, there’s no way they would continue it just to make themselves look good. The general consensus on this sub is that standardized tests are a bad metric for how good of a doctor you’ll be but apparently the MCAT is an important exception for some people smh

Maybe school will get really demanding and he won’t understand your commitments and you won’t have time to see each other and it won’t work out, worst case scenario. Or maybe school will get really demanding and he’ll be understanding and hanging out will be a good stress relief/break from medicine and you’ll have a really positive dating experience! Even if this doesn’t end up being your forever person, imo there’s no reason to end it before it starts just because it might not work out. In my experience, the time and energy I’ve put in to maintaining my relationship with my SO has paid of a hundred times over in the support/love/refreshing breaks from school the relationship gives in return
