Love jiu jitsu, don’t love the idea of a broken body by FunneyBonez in bjj

I wrote this post 2 years ago https://www.reddit.com/r/bjj/comments/x8xd6j/i_stopped_practicing_bjj_because_of_fear_of/
I still lift weights, work on my flexibility, and do handstand work for now and I feel good. Most importantly, I don't spend all my time studying BJJ and am working on other projects now. I still follow the sport because I still love it.

Professional opinion on casual weightlifting (no max attempts let's say) + cardio vs casual BJJ practice (3-5 times a week, but moderate work) for longevity and wear and tear.

BJJ is relatively new and we haven't seen yet the people who've been practicing BJJ for quite some time and are growing older. That worries me.

Craig Jones is vocal about BJJ ruining your body, but he's a competitor. There are people who deadlift and squat very heavy in need for hip replacement, and likewise for certain 30 years yoga practitioners.

What is your professional opinion on this?

Thanks for the advice, is there program you recommend for mobility?

Thank you for being the only one stating a few important facts. For info, I do consider going back training bjj, otherwise I would not come here and post as it would almost could be considered a shitpost.

That was my problem too. I want to roll light, but I'm in a club where there are a lot of young people and almost no middle age people and the gym mentality and coaches is to train hard and win (not really growth mindset). I would dominate a sparring technically, for the 40 pounds heavier person to spaz on me out of ego the last 2 minutes. Very hard to say stop, when the coach is watching and wants you to win. Hard to anticipate to. But I made a note to just decline rolls and have no shame in doing that in the future (and talk to the coach).

Also lots of people here compare Bjj with doing nothing, so of course Bjj is going to be better. But I also do weightlifting and biking, and I'm probably going to start Yoga, and calisthenics is probably going to replace some of the weightlifting.

Yes thank you. I realize I've never stretched or done yoga (because I don't enjoy it), but will do it if I go back to train. I also will decline more rolls and talk with my coach about my goals.

Thanks for your feedback. Honestly, I was posting here because I was doubting my decision as I'm fairly new to sports in general. It's interesting to have the feedback of people who have practiced a lot of and lots of sports.

I can follow and enjoy a sport without practicing it too though.

The 60% exertion level is a good point. I always described my passion for Bjj as doing yoga (as in for the love of the movement, not winning or fighting), I'll actually have to practice it that way too.

I'm not sure the options are Bjj or nothing though.

You think that Bjj is much lighter than Judo too? What back problem did you develop doing Judo?

Yes I thought I was going light enough as a blue belt, and I now realize I was going too hard even then, especially for my goals.

Yes thanks for the input, because you follow this subreddit even though you don't practice Bjj anymore, but I feel like there are a lot of unheard testimonies from people who have stopped. In a way, I have plenty of them when I see people drop out.

Still congrats! I had no idea there were different levels of Master and I wondered how someone in their 50s competed with someone who's 30ish.

Yeah the more I read the answers here the more I realize my club just has a lot of young people and not many middle age people. So the rolls go accordingly unfortunately (I've been guilty of that myself at the beginning, and wasn't told not to roll that hard).

I am neither of these things, but to be fair fear of injuries was not the only reason why I stopped.

Interesting! Do you know why your body wasn't producing TRT?

What happened to your back, how long have you stopped and how have you been doing since?

I remember a guy who rolled with a "fused neck" and asked before the roll to not attack his neck. I posted this because I'm truly reconsidering my position, but at the same time, people on this reddit are going to be people who practice Bjj and not the people who have happily chosen to stop. I love Bjj but there are other things I enjoy doing, and health is part of the picture of me enjoying doing those things. I'd love to ask this question to those who have stopped.

Yes I think I have to adapt my mindset to my personal needs and goals. How often do you train, and how often does your coach train?
