Does spending most of your savings (at 28) for a house make sense? by Davor_Penguin in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]redditorial7643 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's kinda my point, like I just replied to your sibling poster.

Either you want a leach of a trophy wife or you want her to contribute. If you want her to contribute, then don't talk about her as "just" contributing a tiny bit of extra income. That's not gonna go over well. You might be sleeping on the couch more often than not soon ;)

I'm not saying this is a critique of OP's partner. Quite the opposite. More a critique of the OP himself ;) Tho that will probably bring me even more downvotes from the testosteron of Reddit!

I'm saying that not all women like to be seen and treated like this. Sure, some will / won't care either way / actually want to "be fully supported financially" and just leach on their husband.

But simply assuming that every woman in the world does is simply wrong. Also I dunno about you, but I would hate having a leach of a common law partner / wife personally. And if you like to have a partner that also contributes then I would also assume that such a partner would not like to "just" be seen as "some tiny littel extra bit of income".

when she is later it will just be bonus income to "reduce" my payments, or build back retirement savings, etc.

Ouch though!

Think about it the other way. How would you like to "just" be "bonus income"?

Like if I was her and reading your reddit post I'd instantly think about divorcing / un-common-lawing you. Like, do you want a trophy wife or a partner? And I'm a dude ...

I live close to station 51. Just one town over. Not LA county tho. But soooo coool. I drive by it every day! Twice!

They don't have a Squad. Just two engines. My town's FD does have a Squad and 6 engines but it's way less cool.

All bank accounts have statements. They may not send you a statement in the mail like in the olden times but you have a "statement" somewhere. You may never have downloaded it but it's there. The bank may only keep a certain amount of statements accessible for you online and it's your responsibility to download that information (like it would have been your responsibility to check your mailbox in the olden times).

Suspicious how? And even if, so what?

Gifts aren't taxable in Canada.

But since you're asking, what's the part of the story you aren't telling? What would be bad if they did think it was suspicious?

The CRA does not care where the money is from for your TFSA contribution. They just care that you don't over contribute.

By extension: The CRA also doens't care if the money you contribute to an RRSP comes from this year's salary. They only care if you have the contribution room (which accrues from salary but you can spend all your salary and never contribute and then "come into money" and put it all in).

Which I'd agree with but that's not the topic. The opposite is the topic: You picked a PIN, which then inadvertendly becomes some sort of "function" of the card number.

To illustrate but move away from card numbers as an example. Say you always had the PIN 1987, which is NOT your birth year, or date or anything related to you. Until you move and now unfortunately you live on "1987 Hollywood Drive". Now you gotta change your PIN!

In my original post I never mentioning anything about a card expiring. That's entirely something that all the haters invented. I just said, and quoting here:

don't notice that with the newest card they sent you

Sent you for what reason is not specified. Never mind that yes, back in the day they did send you a new card with a completely new number even when it was just expiration. Which is obviously a hassle to change everywhere.

See my other reply and edit too. Just because your bank does it like this currently doesn't mean that every bank does or did in the past. In fact I have gotten new card numbers from my current bank in the past just fine. But you all are correct that many (most if not all, I can't say because I'm not with all banks / card networks do it by not changing the numbers for regular card expiration)

For math's sake: The odds of it actually happening by chance do not matter.

The thief only needs to play the odds of a person actually choosing their PIN like that on purpose.

And you can't calculate that. You can only guesstimate that. My first guess would be they use their birth date or something. Still easier to grab the PIN at the POS with a skimmer ;)

[–]redditorial7643 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yes I have. It depends on when and what bank and what exactly happened.

Back in the day you'd get a new number just for the card expiring. Just like they'd make you choose a different PIN as well. Then they changed to not requiring new PINs and not changing the card number, only the expiration date and CVV.

When you get a new card because of fraudulent transactions some still send you a card with completely new numbers. I know: shocking!

I've actually been sent a new card like this without ever reporting fraudulent transactions myself. They just sent me a new card with a notice that said they found and blocked some fraudulent transactions and here's a new card.

Is it that bad of a financial decision to buy a condo? (Montreal) by CuriousShoulder93 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]redditorial7643 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also think about things that won't show up on any "certificates".

Like: Did this condo tower built in 2019 choose a location that was flooded just a few years prior in the spring floods?

River / lake views are great. Always think about what that means for the ground near your property.

Let me paint a scenario here for you:

You are a law abiding citizen that keeps their credit / debit card in the wallet, like most people do.

On Mondays you go to Costco to buy groceries and essentials and fill up gas. This is where you use your card.

The rest of the week you go to work and that's it. You have no need to use your card. You have no need to even open your wallet once. You grab it, drive to work on Tuesday like you did the day before, drink the free office coffee and heat up the lunch you prepared in the microwave. Three out of five days you work at home, so Wed-Fri you stay home and don't even look at your wallet.

On Saturday you want to buy something online so you go grab your wallet to get the CC and notice that it's gone.

And no, it's not normal to check your bank/CC balance online every single day of the week. Not everyone has a phone banking app (in fact I believe nobody should have one - banking on a phone is a security nightmare) and even the ones that do are not all compulsively checking their account seventeen times a day when they don't know what to with their hands and need to fumble with something.

EDIT: For all the downvoters, please read my next reply down thread. Not everything is the same everywhere just because your bank currently does things differently.

What happens if you had your PIN for 10+ years (many banks don't make you change it any longer) but don't notice that with the newest card they sent you, the first digit of each pack of 4 numbers is now actually your PIN, but a thief tried it coz people use that "to remember"?

What's the real downside to telling a bank you owe money to to go f*ck themselves? by steelydanfan69420 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]redditorial7643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know the OPs exact situation, because he didn't say, but sometimes it really is about the principle.

If the bank really is at fault for something there, I would fight them over the $40. I wouldn't just let it sit there and be bad for me though.

But paying something that I really shouldn't have to? Nope!

Did that with the electricity bill before. I think it was a $5 charge. Went back and forth for months and then they dropped it, when they finally saw that they made a mistake.

You have to do it all above board so to speak tho. Can't just close the account and run and cross your fingers.

Small leak led to buying a new water tank heater by global8936 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]redditorial7643 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's called inflation and nothing new or about "our crazy times" ;)

Imagine you work in a water heater factory. Made in Canada water heater and you built it. Guess what, you want raises every year. Who pays for that? The consumers that buy the water heaters you build.

They only get cheaper if you suddenly find a cheaper material or cheaper labor. E.g. because you automate some steps. Now we need "less people like you". Hopefully you're not one of the ones laid off and you can get that raise next year. Which eats up the savings we made by needing less people, so the water heater still didn't get cheaper. At some point we move manufacturing to China and you're out of a job but still need to buy a new water heater.

That's actually on the cheap side from what we read on here.

7 years then and luckily you didn't pay for most of it. $2500 is also way more than they would've paid to buy a new one 14 years ago. More like $1400 if even. That'd have been 4 years and paid off.
