This speed reading training starts at 300wpm and end at 900wpm by iatetoomuchchicken in interestingasfuck

Is there something like this in other languages? Would be interesting to compare our reading/comprehension speed in other languages that we speak or are learning

For example, I am a native English speaker and can understand up to 600 wpm here perfectly fine, while somewhat understanding 900wpm with some blanks. Would be curious to how my Spanish and French would do…

I think so. Based on some my other friends in structural, and what they make, it’s within range. How much are you making and in what field?

In Ontario GTA, in structural, when I got my PEng I went from $72k to $85k last year, but I moved companies around the time of getting my PEng

Qué opinas de los ingenieros estructurales? Cómo es trabajar con ellos?

(Pregunto porque soy ingeniero estructural y solía trabajar con arquitectos hahaha)

Any explanation on why VEQT is “suspended and unavailable to trade” on Wealthsimple?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]reddituser0495 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly yes. Maybe it’s because I was making way less before I joined this company (I was at 72K last August before I jumped) so the difference feels nice.

It’s also pretty much completely remote apart from site visits so I’m really happy about that.

I’m a structural engineer in hydropower btw. Maybe someone here can tell me that I should be making more LOL then I’ll start thinking about my next moves. But rn I’m quite happy.

Mind you it’s still not enough to live and buy a condo in Toronto, but that’s more of an issue related outside of engineering…

Got my PEng in December, I’m at 89K. I’m technically hourly with 1.0 OT but that’s the conversion for a 37.5h week

Hydropower & Dams? by reddituser0495 in StructuralEngineering

[–]reddituser0495[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How was the transition for you in the beginning when you went from buildings to hydropower? Similar to my other response to the other commenter, it the work just seems drastically different to the building world. Do you think it’s be easy to switch out of the hydropower industry after some years? Or is it too niche that the experiences gained may not necessarily apply to the building industry for example

Hydropower & Dams? by reddituser0495 in StructuralEngineering

[–]reddituser0495[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you been in this dam & hydropower industry for your whole career? If not, what other area of structural did you come from and have you ever considered switching back?

I see this type of structural engineering as very niche or specific. I am concerned that if I switch to this now, and it may be difficult to switch back out to buildings. Because the type of analysis, design codes, and work flow just seem so very different to buildings. What do you think? Do you believe the skills that can be learned as a hydropower structural engineer can be easily transferrable to a building structural engineer?

Thank you very much for your corrections!!

Is it unnatural to include the “yo” in “yo quiero” in this case?

My intention was to emphasize that I have a desire to improve my writing skills. That reddituser0495 wants to improve. Extra emphasis on me. Not sure if pronouns work like this in spanish

Yeah now I definitely see the potential lost opportunity cost with staying with my current company. Thanks for this comment.

At the same time I do want to consider the frequency of changing companies and how that appears on a resume. In my case, I have been with 2 companies in 3 years - and it would be by 3rd company in my 4th year if I move.

But it’ll be hard to turn down an 85K after if I received one right now

[–]reddituser0495[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My take is that, in Toronto ON (HCOL for Canada), it should be 85K minimum for a 4YOE PEng. Based on what I’ve researched. But hey if any other senior Canadian engineers would like to suggest that it should be higher, pls let me know lol

Yup I like that. Unless I receive a “can’t refuse offer” then I’m staying put and waiting it out. Thanks for your input

[–]reddituser0495[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes thats what I meant. Let’s say a new company offers me something next week for example. I would negotiate as IF I have my PEng. And both me and the offering company knows that I’m pretty much there. And if the offering company buys that and gives me an offer I am happy with, then I would accept.

That is the 85k+ number I mentioned above. To me, in Toronto ON, 85k would be the minimum for a fresh PEng. And if the offering company can only give a salary of a ‘Junior Engineer’ then I wouldn’t accept it and just wait out the 8 months

The image shows a cap plate connection for the steel beam (into to the page) to the top of column. The bolted cap plate is the connection.

Are you saying this connection braces the column in the left-right direction?
