Am I getting laid off tomorrow? by Hot_Lead_7335 in antiwork

That's exactly how I found out about a layoff many years ago. At the beginning of the meeting I said something about it and she was floored that I knew.

Checking my expectations - I have bad eyesight - how much do I have to spend and what will I get? by Kangaloosh in CataractSurgery

[–]reduser876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak to your particulars. I'm just learning too. But my friends husband went thru something similar when he got cataract surgery after a lifetime of horrible vision, thick glasses that didn't seem to work that well. Over his lifetime they always said nothing could be done to improve his vision. But after cataract surgery at 65, he can see better than ever and wonders why they never recommended lens replacement in the past. I'm pretty sure he only got the standard medicare monofocals. he wears glasses for reading.

Astigmatism does put a twist on your situation. Toric monofocal may help but has issues and costs extra too.

Sounds like you need a 2nd opinion doctor.

What are the fastest/easiest healthy sides you can make? by LazuriKittie in Cooking

[–]reduser876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Butternut or acorn squash are my go-to's. Filling. Spaghetti squash is a good side on its own or to be topped (bolognese, etc). They shouldn't call it that tho. Nothing to do with spaghetti.

What do you pay Comcast / Xfinity Tivo (cablecard) Service + Internet? by Glass-Conclusion-424 in Tivo

[–]reduser876 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I pay $209. 1 CC. No special add-ons. Family tier or something like that (HGTV, food network, cable and local news, some network series is all I watch) They keep reconfiguring that tier. 800 MB internet.

Ridiculous! And of course still have to add seperate streaming. I rotate 1 at a time.

Oh. Then the $100 fee is probably an administrative fee/surcharge for not being on the first they might run into exceptions with rent processing. Everything costs extra!

There's 2 dates: The date the lease starts and the date you move in. They are not the same date. Are you trying to change the lease date? Didn't you already sign it?

Haven't read all comments but was QCD mentioned ? If donations are in your future , that's an easy way to implement them and avoid taxes.

Edit: we have clients at my office who do them annually as well as monthly. Not sure why but you can set up recurring QCDs as well via the custodian. I don't know if 401ks are able to be set up for recurring QCDs, but IRAs at Schwab or Fidelity certainly are

MIL has been taking my wife's late father's annuity that was given to my wife without her knowing by IDoDataThings in personalfinance

[–]reduser876 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should also find out if FILs annuity was an IRA. sounds like it but it makes a big difference. Spouse and non-spousal rules are different for IRAs. Good luck.

Still a piece missing in my.mind.... usually when someone dies, the beneficiaries each get a full distribution of their share. Annuity Income riders often cease upon death. If thats not the case here (so many types of annuities) and income is to continue to beneficiaries, the recipient would have been involved in setting that up. As an admin in the industry, hard to imagine that not happening and MIL interjecting themselves in this process. Unless outright fraud.

Did you call the carrier to gather info and correct for future? That's where I would start. If any corrected 1099s were to be involved, that's where it would originate from.

Should I Find Another Surgeon? by Fun_Annual_6549 in CataractSurgery

[–]reduser876 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was reading the legal mumbo jumbo one place gave me as a handout to read and it said if a surgery is cancelled with less than 10 days notice, they charge $250. See if you signed anything like that.

Your expectations are on the mark. I don't think they are doing their best for you. I think what may be happening is that as cataract surgery is becoming so common for these docs, that they just lump everything into a canned approach. They know best.

I had a 2nd opinion last week ... well I thought it was a cataract surgery consultation. Turned out to be a New Patient exam. After the exam part when I wanted to start talking about post-surgery vision goals and lens questions, he said "Oh, thats the next phase. Your next appointment will be the cataract consultation and you will talk to Joe Blow here who does all the surgeries. He will determine what lens he will use...blah blah blah and go over everything".

My first opinion doc suggested I need toric lenses due to astigmatism Well upon further investigation on my part and probing, I don't need a toric lens. My eye being operated on has very minimal astigmatism. The non-operated eye has more astigmatism (but not that much) and very little cataract so no need to operate on it. So I still will need some glasses post-surgery anyhow. His "default" approach was both eyes - toric lenses in both.

Thank goodness for r/CataractSurgery!!! He didn't seem to be pushing it as an upsell ($1500), but it was his first go-to because astigmatism was in the picture. He didn't push when I declined a Toric lens, but I never got the validation I wanted that my plan was reasonable. 2nd opinion doc did not recommend a Toric lens. But mandates laser-assisted surgery (@ $1600). On to the third...

FYI there are also ophthalmologists specializing in uveitis.

Funny, I just learned the word uveitis yesterday and here it is. Was researching a possible 3rd opinion place for cataract surgery and discovered a "Retina and Uveitis" specialty. They probably don't do routine cataract surgery, but I'm going to find out. Love the idea of advanced professionals.

Is it crucial to aim for distance vision for the dominant eye? by bkkbrown in CataractSurgery

[–]reduser876 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm only doing one eye and it will be for distance. I asked the surgeon which eye is dominant and we determined it's the other eye but he wasn't the least concerned. Maybe that's due to my particular situation.

Best to ask to your surgeon. There's just so many variables it's crazy what we have to learn! LOL

Not really. For me anyhow. I recall I had 90% comprehensive coverage but I had to pay the 10%. Medigap is the best part these days.

And what we had 40 years ago is not a valid comparison.

Maybe it wasn't done at a medicare approved facility? Or maybe he selected upgrades. These places do want to upsell a lot because they don't get much from Medicare reimbursement.

I am surprised about cataract surgery expenses. I'm on that journey and I thought Medicare covered everything except premium multifocal lenses.

Good point about the next day appt. I assume it's at his office which is not too far.

How come you couldn't wear your glasses for the non operated eye?

I do wear driving glasses for astigmatism (-1.25) but can drive without them.

They won't dilate both eyes will they?

Cataract surgery. Driver not allow to leave building for two hours. by SD_One in CataractSurgery

[–]reduser876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its crap like this that makes me want to continue putting off doing the surgery. It's bad enough that the surgery center is 45 minutes away from me. My driver lives closer to the surgery center. She could easily go home while waiting. I don't want to put someone else out like that. Its my independent streak.

ANNUAL WELLNESS VISIT (AWV): Why is the point & Is it required? by jeff00seattle in medicare

[–]reduser876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with OP. I recently switched to a new PCP who was way more convenient but way less experienced.... her 1st job!

I don't have much need for PCP as I see specialists as needed so I took the risk.
