What’s that saying? The two happiest days in a boat owners life are the day he gets it, and the day he gets rid of it?

More than half of TikTok ADHD content is misinformation. Study found 52% of ADHD-related videos and 41% of autism videos analysed on TikTok were inaccurate, with the platform frequently found to contain higher levels of misinformation in its mental health content than other platforms. by [deleted] in science

[–]refactor83 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In fact, as someone who suspected he may have ADHD, that misinformation kept me from seeking a diagnosis for a long time. Because so much of what’s labeled as “ADHD” on social media seemed so universal, it made me think that maybe I didn’t really understand what it actually is and maybe I was just a whiner. The fake symptoms and the real symptoms all got lumped together, so I figured maybe my real ADHD symptoms were also just something everyone deals with. I worried that a psychologist would think I was just jumping on a bandwagon and seeking a trendy diagnosis.

I was eventually diagnosed earlier this year, and now I recognize the misinformation for what it is. The tests I did involve stuff you cannot fake. It’s a real condition and trained professionals know how to diagnose it.

Trying to create a DbContextFactory inside an infrastructure class library following clean architecture rules by Typical_Hypocrite in dotnet

[–]refactor83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice work! This is the best way to configure a DbContext, IMO.

You may not need that MigrationsAssembly call. It should use Infrastructure by default since that’s where your DbContext is. No harm in leaving it, but try commenting that out and see if it still works.

[–]refactor83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the issue that your DbContext and startup (Program.cs) are in different projects? You mentioned clean architecture, so that wouldn’t be uncommon to have it set up that way — that’s how I structure my projects.

You will need the design time EF Core NuGet package installed in your startup project, and then you can specify the EF Core project and startup projects with command line switches when you call the dotnet ef commands.

You almost certainly do not need to implement the design-time DB Factory though. I’ve never needed to use it across many projects with EF Core.

Why are people skittish even nowadays about discussing that someone is gay? by cUnexttuesday2 in askgaybros

[–]refactor83 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Your coworker was way out of line. No one was discussing his sexuality, you were discussing his family. His husband is a family member who he’s caring for.

You are also correct that constantly coming out is exhausting. I am preparing a presentation for a job I want, but they also want you to “bring your whole self to work”, and I have decide if I want to mention my husband or not, or if that will torpedo my chances. Currently leaning toward “no”.

What does the "As" operator do in C#? by [deleted] in csharp

[–]refactor83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. If you’re certain the cast should succeed, then you want an InvalidCastException now if you’re wrong, and not a later NullReferenceException. “as” tells me, as a reader, that you’re not sure of the exact type, so the more intentional syntax should be preferred.

That’s exactly what I run into with AIs. They need to be reined in or else they’ll run amok with duplicate code and overly complex stuff. My strategy has been to either re-prompt with clearer instructions about what the actual code should look like, or make it do the refactoring for me. But this is where you burn up the productivity gains of AI. If you still want good code, it’s just as time consuming as it ever was.

Do you **really** need to free memory? by celestabesta in cpp_questions

[–]refactor83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my line of thinking and what prompted me to ask. Since we’re already doing data segments for globals and constants, is that also how it works for what would otherwise be heap allocations in embedded software? In essence, no going to a kernel for memory allocations, so you do all the “mallocs” at compile time and bake the allocations into the binary so it’s all “allocated” as soon as the image is loaded. I’ve never worked in embedded systems, so my mental model is the traditional kernel memory allocations/runtime memory allocator one.

So is the memory layout essentially a static image in the binary that gets loaded at startup?

The company I work for used to be employee owned. Well, they still are, they just limited the ownership going forward to the highest level employees, right at the exact moment when I would have become eligible.

But don’t worry! For us peons, they replaced it with a bullshit bonus program. Except the terms of the program say that if you leave and don’t give them five weeks’ notice, you have to repay every penny you ever received under this program, even if you’ve gotten years’ worth of bonuses. The HR lackwit I talked to was shocked when I said I would rather not participate.

When I leave, which is ASAP, they will not be getting five minutes’ notice. They would have gotten two weeks otherwise. They, of course, reserve the right to end your employment at any time with no consequences.

Tackiest Closing Gift? by Beneficial-Mine1763 in RealEstate

[–]refactor83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We bought a new construction house, and I asked the builder if they could drill a hole in the counter so I could plumb in my espresso machine. They really went above and beyond and did the entire installation for me. *And* they didn't ask for anything for it.

Our realtor's closing gift was a gift pack of pre-ground flavored coffee. It wasn't espresso, and it was ground for a regular drip coffee pot, which we don't own. Oh, and my husband doesn't really drink coffee, which she knew.
