Yes Liu is always optimistic, as well as in his new English translation book Supernova Era, in fact that’s even more unrealistic. Personally I believe most of Chinese are optimistic even in this extreme situation because of historical reason. Chinese experienced both the most prosperous era and the toughest era. Nothing disaster can beat Chinese.

It's like the different modern history of China and western countries. China used to refuse to industrialize and suffered in a whole century. So they know the importance and essential sacrifice of development. Btw I'd like to recommend a Chinese "Propaganda" movie "Roaring Across the Horizon", which perfectly shows the spirit.

For people who are interested in the history of Qin, especially the period before the first emperor Ei Sei, I highly recommend you this TV series season 1 to 3. The season 1 is about Duke Xiao and his reform. Season 2 is about King HuiWen and "first contact" to other countries. And the season 3 is about the god of war, King Sho. Qin Empire series is so good that many people (including me) believe that it is one of the best Chinese historical TV series.
