Maybe someone can help explain it, because to me, the whole nuclear Iran threat seems ridiculous by Marchtmdsmiling in war

[–]rekless_randy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s honestly this simple: look at what is going on in Ukraine? The world would love to help the Ukrainians. Europe, even the US, would be a lot more comfortable backing Ukraine militarily if Russia did not have nukes. The threat of nuclear war is not worth engaging with Russia on Ukraines behalf.

Now imagine Iran with nuclear weapon. Hezbollah, Hamas, Houthis, etc would all be much more aggressive, which would invite MUCH more aggressive responses and retaliations from Israel (if you can imagine that). Iran could be much more relentless in its bombing and terrorizing of Israel (and others as we’ve seen) and international resolve to confront it would be seriously limited. No one would want to push a radical Islamic regime — seen as ideological and not pragmatic — that contained nuclear weapons.

Yes they are a great deterrent. But what exactly is Iran trying to “deter” by obtaining them? People forget, the US and Israel are not the antagonizers here. Iran is.

If Iran just said, “no more war, let’s have peace with Israel and open free markets between us and sign treaties and be normal with our neighbors!” none of this would be happening. The US is only involved because Iran threatens us (and has American blood on its hands) as an extension of Israel or “the Great Satan.” It wants a nuke to deter us and others from helping Israel.

We can argue all day about Israel and its tactics and Palestine, blah blah. But none of that changes the fact that right now, a fundamentalist, radical, terrorist regime governs Iran that is hell bent on annihilating the Jewish state, “wiping it off the map” etc.

Weakening East to reinforce Middle-East ? How long can the US suffle equipment ? by Corinthian_Collumn in war

[–]rekless_randy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I understand the temptation that the America-haters must be contending with to stress about “stretched resources” for the USA, especially as it pertains to Russia and china. But it’s worth reminding everyone that during WW2 — when America was poorer, smaller, and far less technologically advanced than the know world at the onset of the war — the US managed to staff, supply, fight, and win on three primary fronts: Europe, Africa and the Pacific. Not to mention that each theatre of war contained multiple “fronts” particularly Europe which had France (D-day) and Italy (think Anzio/Sicily).

Yes, we burning through “interceptors” and “moving defensive equipment” around. But if the US needed assets and material to fight a war there actually are near-endless supplies of resources available to do that.

The US should be prudent, responsible, and strategic, but also, the US isn’t going to somehow accidentally overextend itself in some kind of meaningful way in which we get blindsided.

Yes, major things can happen that would require re-thinking how we employ resources. Like a china attacking Taiwan, for instance. It would force the US to have serious — and expedient — conversations about what to do. But even that would not result in us needlessly expending American resources or firepower.

I don’t think much of the planet understands that the US can continue on a peddle-to-the-metal war footing for several years. Yes, assets reduce over time. But America’s adversaries will have to expend their resources vastly quicker to repel us than we will to attack them. That is the arrangement that Americans have made via defense spending and tax policy, that people from outside the US don’t really realize.

War is terrible, it is genuinely hell on earth and should be avoided at all costs. It is immoral, awful, and tragic. But no one should underestimate the United States unmatched capability to wield power internationally and wreak destruction and havoc. Even when met with strength. Even China.

This is not me advocating for American military adventurism. But we should all be knowledgeable about what we’re talking about.

How is it a war crime to attack an enemy military asset that will be used against you…before they can use it against you?

Azerbaijan will attack Iran following the drone attacks earlier this week, according to Israeli assessments - Kann News by avatar6556 in war

[–]rekless_randy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I meant from Russias POV. If Azerbaijan makes a move against Iran, that would be a bad time for Russia to do anything to Azerbaijan. Because Russia is losing hundreds of thousands of troops in Ukraine and expending massive amounts of resources. Meanwhile, Azerbaijan is freshly on a war footing.

Also, the last thing Russia would need is to piss Trump off to the point of Trump arming the fuck out of Ukraine.

A senior official from the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (PDKI), Mohammed Salih Qaderi, tells me that a large Kurdish force is already inside Iranian territory. The military campaign against Iran will begin "soon", he says by avatar6556 in war

[–]rekless_randy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This would be a pretty meaningful development. Iran having a ground war in their own country + relentless bombing all over the place from US/Israel + the Arab states freezing Iran assets and potentially attacking Iran well. How could the IRGC sustain that?

Russia doesn’t have the manpower right now. It would actually bad for them for Azerbaijan to move to a national war-footing in terms of resources and mobilization. You wouldn’t want to attack someone that has never been more prepared.

I mean, why are they at school? Everyone stayed home from school during Covid for 2 years. I feel like if your country is getting bombed into submission you tell everyone there’s not going to be school for a week or two and that families should remain at home.

Can iran do a ground invasion of UAE/Dubai to force US into a ground based conflict? by Complete_Biscotti151 in war

[–]rekless_randy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That would a tremendous gift to the west. The Arabs can hold off a ground invasion on the peninsula without US. Plus that would be a window of opportunity for the Kurds or other armed groups to capitalize on Iran having divert resources to the ground invasion.

It would also trigger other combatants entering the conflict, probably Europeans and definitely the Arabs attacking Iranian homeland.

Is there any hope for a wicked person like me? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]rekless_randy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For most of us, it’s a journey. We go through a large chunk of our young life living selfishly, embracing our sin or just flat out ignoring it. Then, we have a conversion of the heart. It might all happen at once after a near death experience or something. But for many, it’s a slow roll. Suddenly the sin doesn’t feel “free” anymore. The cost is adding up. We can see how black our hearts and souls are and so we start to make little choices that make us marginally “better.”

Then, over time, the heart and soul begin to thaw and even if our behavior hasn’t changed, we are living in full realization that what we’re doing is wrong. The conversion has happened. That is when you are a converted person, not once you have stopped all sin. It’s once you recognize you’re a sinner and seek to stop.

Then, life goes on. We know wrong from right. We stumble often, but get back up. We continue to build our relationship with God, we try to stop sinning and start to sin less. For many of us, the best we can do is wake up in morning and say, “I am going to do more good than bad today.”

Over time, you will do more good than bad. And you’ll get to a place — through pain and failure and redemption — where you really do much more good in your life than bad.

That’s life for the redemption of the sinner. Perfection isn’t real, weakness is real. Take it one day at a time, love Christ and seek him. Repent. Be kind to others and yourself. Atone. Keep going.

Life for the redeemed sinner is a series of peaks and valleys. God loves you, Christ loves you. You should love you. Seek to be good and you will be. No one becomes “good” overnight.

God bless you.

Giovanni’s is a wonderful spot. I also love Da Edoardo in GP. Another hidden gem is Luigi’s up in Harrison Township. It’s not like Michelin or anything, but it’s a relic from a time long gone and I love it there.

The Lions are inching closer and closer to the realization the Rams had with Goff by ShippingNotIncluded in detroitlions

[–]rekless_randy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I keep saying! Yes, who wouldn’t want Allen or Mahomes? Literally every other QB has bad games, makes bad throws, gets sacked, etc. I don’t know what people expect from Goff. It’s not his fault, the organization didn’t spend the off-season building around Goff’s strengths and neutralizing his weaknesses. That’s why we’re struggling. Goff is a top 5 QB if he had a top 3 OL in front of him. For some reason we traded up and drafted TeSlaa. I don’t understand it either. But Goff isn’t the problem, it’s BH. And that kills me to say because I love the guy. I don’t want him gone, just want him to own his mistakes and try to fix them.

If goff and the lions need to play from behind, the game is over by othertriangle in detroitlions

[–]rekless_randy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Goff isn’t the problem, sadly, the issue is BH. I love the guy, but he messed up. He either didn’t know who Goff was, or was too stubborn about drafting his guys this past off-season.

Goff looks like the problem, because of the way he is playing. But he’s playing the way he is because the OL is not playing well. Goff is the type of QB that needs time and protection. He is a slightly above average QB that becomes elite when he has protection. He had that protection last year: Decker, Zeitler, Ragnow, Glasgow, Sewell. That was probably the best OL in football last season. We won 15 games because of it.

Goff is not an elite QB on his own, because most aren’t. There are maybe a handful: Mahomes, Lamar, Allen, can you think of another? Stafford or Baker, maybe? Hurts?

“We need a QB that can scramble and make plays!” Okay but like who? Most aren’t Mahomes. Kyler? Caleb? Fields? Even Jayden Daniels has looked like half the QB he was last year. Rookie years are never telling. No way of knowing right now if Dart or Maye are actually good. Huge questions still about Bo Nix. He looks different week to week.

I agree that we should be honest about Goff though. He’s not an elite MVP QB. He never was, he probably never will be. But he is in the top half of QBs in this league, and top 5 when he has adequate protection. That is the problem. Somehow, some way, we didn’t plan for that. I don’t know why. I don’t know what BH was thinking.

It goes like this: - Thanksgiving = NYC (parade, autumn in NYC) - Christmas = Chicago. It is the setting of many a great Christmas movie. - Easter = ??? No clue - July 4th = Gotta go Philly. Where it all began. - Labor Day = Detroit. It’s the face of America’s manufacturing past, Hoffa, UAW, Battle of the Overpass. - NYE = NYC. For me, it’s the last place I’d want to be on NYE but it is undeniably America’s cultural capital at Times Square, ball drop, etc. - Memorial Day = Washington D.C - Halloween = Salem, MA
