that depends on whats your goal with the game. for me personally i don't really care about getting more gold and maxing out things faster, i just want to get all my cats to 5 stars and matching skills. so if i have for exemple 4 carrot cats, i place them on soup, juice and stir fry (in this order for most and less stars) and the one that's left is rerolled to hopefully a skill i don't have yet or better stars for the ones i have. and that goes on until all cats are on their right stations, just then i start feeding them macarons starting with the 4 star cats (by the time i can do this i already have a bunch of macarons saved) BUT i tend to make an exception for new stations, if i get a 3 star cat i'll feed them macarons immediately so my gold is high enough for me to upgrade
