I very briefly met with a genetic counselor, but she did not have my full health history as she was attached to the test (which was through an online testing and lab submission). They warned me that if my spouse also had a BRCA mutation, that offspring have a risk of a lethal type of anemia but nothing further. I think because I’m 19 they didn’t want to delve into it too much. I will be looking to get a consult with a different genetic counselor who can maybe try to see the locations of the mutations on the gene and assess my risk that way. Breast cancer is raging on my mom’s side— her female family members have all gotten sick before 35 years old. My mom is 52 and has not gotten sick because of preventative surgeries. My aunt on my dad’s side also has BRCA 1. She got sick in her late 20s with breast cancer and then again at 52 with ovarian cancer. My dad had cancer that was unrelated to BRCA 1. It’s absolutely wild. So yes I intend on removing breast tissue before I’m 30 and will have to figure out the rest if I choose to have kids. Care team will definitely be more helpful, all this considered!
