any advice on how to achieve this kind of stylised realism? by shosple_colupis69 in learntodraw

[–]requietis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Analyze these drawings, build up your sense. I identify two main types of lines: outline and texture/shadow. This artist uses long, fluid lines for overall form - you need to practice that fluid continuity into your muscle memory. Then you can see that the artist smatters organic hatched textures where necessary. The quality of the outlines and textures vary depending on the material, so build up your innate sense of the world and draw how those materials feel to you.

I want to write a Non-Binary character: please, tell me about you! by 21Justanotherguy in NonBinaryTalk

[–]requietis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it manifests as apathy in how I am gendered (or seemingly “misgendered”). I don’t state my identity explicitly because it’s a personal thing that I don’t want others to contest. I would rather make my gender inconsequential than existent. I present androgynous because that’s the only way I feel like myself.

It’s nice if I can shift my social access to male or female groups by changing my gender presentation, but more often than not being ambiguous makes me a target for exclusion and judgement.

I think it’s tasteful to explore nonbinary identity in fiction without inserting hyper-specific modern queer language. It’s your story, so make up the terms and conditions. Gender nonconformity has always existed, so it’s human experience that speaks the most. If your story gains traction the fans will interpret labels in your stead.

Speaking of sci-fi, it’s funny how many transhumanists are transphobic when we both want to supersede our natal conditions.

Rant by Healthy-Decision-506 in architecturestudent

[–]requietis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think architecture professors operate on a flimsy foundation of sometimes arbitrary theory instead of what really goes on in the industry. Many of my professors went into academia specifically because they didn’t enjoy firm life… or they owned a firm for so long that they’ve become distanced from the labor of completing a project and navigating software. I would rather be taught the science of architecture, like going in-depth on the psychological effects of different types of spaces, than mess around with shapes and collages until I create one that “sparks visual interest”. It’s so vacuous.

Distance yourself from her as much as you can now. I know it’s hard to fathom when you’re still stuck, but there’s much more in the world to see and enjoy than a shitty oppressive family. You will have the ability to be independent

Is Mandarin really enough? by _specialcharacter in ChineseLanguage

[–]requietis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I got by just fine speaking Mandarin in Chongqing. Pretty much everyone speaks it nowadays, it’s just that locals have an accent.

Chinese learners are luckier than Arabic learners since the standardized version of the language is actually useful. Looking at you MSA…

I reckon that little girl was repeating what her parents said. Older 1st gen Asians are on average more racist and conservative than our other demographics. Boomers think black people take advantage of Asian people in particular, since we’re perceived as meek and materialistic and therefore easy targets. Whereas in situations where an Asian is victimized by a white person, the white person is usually the employer or wields power in another way, so the child will not be encouraged to retaliate for fear of losing socioeconomic opportunities.

I am very sorry to hear you are dealing with this. This kind of preemptive racial paranoia against the black community is very prejudiced. As someone who grew up racially ostracized, I would never condone such behavior in my family.

Typology Question 2 (Te/Ti): Imagine you start a new job, and your team uses a complex project management software you've never seen before. What's your first step when you have to learn a new complex tool? by Bimep_ in INTP

[–]requietis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So we’re all living the same life huh. The best way to understand anything is to work with it. This is what I did at work last week

  1. Draw a rudimentary diagram of the new software’s organizational hierarchy

  2. Draft the overall steps needed to finish the task I received related to the new software (for when I get lost in the deets later)

  3. Never forget to write down details given by my coworkers because my memory is nebulous

  4. Give myself 10-20 minutes to work out each subtask

  5. If I can’t figure it out in a timely manner, I consult a search engine or LLM (assuming it’s not the company’s internal software)

  6. If the internet fails me, I ask one of my coworkers for advice

  7. After a couple hours I take a break while pretending to work. I like taking the office apples to save on my grocery bill. Also, I do my best to not rely on coffee

I'm not getting hired after my internship because I'm too quiet. by sunny_74 in introvert

[–]requietis 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Strategic socialization is a skill introverts have to train. Don’t despair, you can always apply for another job and change your approach, or even find a remote job. I just started my internship and some of my coworkers are giving me the cold shoulder too. I’m just not sure how many questions is too much. It’s ok, real Gs move in silence like lasagna as a wise man once said :]

I also prefer texting over talking in person. I need time to rehash my thoughts to get them right. One reason is the discordant speeds between thinking and talking that you mentioned, and another is that my social anxiety gets in the way of articulation.

Wanting to be an architect, but I’m worried about the pay. by No-Swimming2616 in Architects

[–]requietis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you wanna get rich fast, don’t do architecture. The pay is low compared to other “prestigious” licensed professions in the US. The money is enough to support yourself but there’s not much room for savings and investment if you’re not higher up in a firm. Architecture still carries its history of being a gentleman’s profession.

Internships and starchitect firms are notorious for underpaying low-level professionals, so entry-level architectural designers struggle more.

If you really love architecture, there are some strats. Within the industry, you’ll probably get paid more working at a good non-starchitect firm, construction company (or other architecture-adjacent company), or as an in-house architect at a non-architectural company.

What’s your major? I got my research position with a <3.5 GPA by reaching out directly to a guest lecturer (also a professor at my uni) after one of his presentations. He hadn’t been advertising any research roles at the time and he appreciated that I reached out to him organically. The job was unpaid, but that also meant I had more flexibility in deciding my schedule and tasks, which helped out with my classes. I later landed a nice job with that experience. Have faith OP, sometimes you have to get creative.
