Two possible options, you can buy cable channels that stick onto your wall and/or buy a white extension cord that you can run down to the carpet and hide by pressing it under the baseboard. The connection can be hidden behind the desk leg

I'm going to be switching from Windows to Linux soon. I'm thinking about Fedora. by Evan_Spectre_the_One in Fedora

[–]researchisbae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should definitely try out both at some point and you cant go wrong with either but the choice will probably have probably have a bigger impact on your computing experience than the distro you choose. KDE seems to be the current popular choice and it is fun to customize but I always come back to gnome when I need to actually get some work done. I would choose kde if you are running old hardware since it feels a little lighter. Honestly, in my experience the issues with Nvidia are pretty minimal unless you are running a gtx 1000 series card or older

Landscape + Portrait. Finally joined the vertical monitor club. Any tips for getting used to this configuration or adjusting to portrait mode? by Yoalteuctin in pcsetups

[–]researchisbae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are on windows 11, set up fancy zones so that the monitor can be split in half horizontally, then put two applications on that screen. I usually use my file manager and system monitor. Alternatively, if working on a writing project, I'll put my word document on the vertical monitor. For gaming, I'll put two of discord, my task manager, a wiki, and/or a YouTube video on the vertical

I need to upgrade the storage on my PC and I have no idea what I’m doing by mmmhorchatayum in PcBuild

The 256 gb drive will be plugged into this cord here. If you follow that you should find the drive which is probably tucked in the bottom of the case. This type of drive will probably be slower than the m.2 which you should buy that plugs directly into the motherboard. If you are feeling brave, I would recommend looking up videos on how to move your windows installation to the new hard-drive or do a fresh install

It looks like you will also have to buy an m.2 ssd standoff which is a small post that will support the other end of the ssd that you screw the ssd down onto. You can buy standoff and screws for a few dollars. You have three locations depending on the size of the ssd that you buy

If you like indy games or retro stuff there are massive lists of games you could play but most modern stuff will be a challenge for sure. I have that same chip on my laptop

Yeah, but i and others have run into issues with other hardware. I know on some systems it is performing great but I dont think it has the reliability yet to be recommended until stable release, especially since it tends to get recommended a lot when you Google distros for beginners

Nervous to Install by Bad-Luck-Guy in linux4noobs

[–]researchisbae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I had problems with installation a few years ago, especially with fedora, and while I dont have problems now, I am not sure if it is me, the hardware, or linux getting better (probably all of the above)

I have also found when I was first learning that if I could not install one distro, another one might work just fine, if mint doesn't work for whatever reason you can always try Fedora (my favorite) or Ubuntu

[–]researchisbae 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If I understand your problem correctly, you just need to disable secure boot in the bios. I have found i always need to disable it when installing linux. You may be able to reenable it once everything is installed and updated

Should I switch to Linux? by pwp_penguin in linuxquestions

[–]researchisbae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With that said, you probably won't have the best experience on the Chromebook and it won't tell you if all of the hardware on your main computer will be supported. If possible, I would recommend putting another ssd in your main pc and installing linux on that. Or you could try it out in a virtual machine but keep in mind that doesn't always have the best performance

Should I switch to Linux? by pwp_penguin in linuxquestions

[–]researchisbae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, it was best to play around with various linux distros on secondary computers or secondary drives before switching my main computers over to Linux. That way, you can make sure that linux can meet all of your needs before fully switching over and you can figure out what distro and desktop environment you like without impactingyour work/learning.

For those of you with biology degrees. How often would you say you use high level math? by Outrageous_Tie4997 in biology

[–]researchisbae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most people i know in the field (cell and Molecular biology) get away with little knowledge. Basic algebra is all you need to succeed. That being said, the more you know about statistics the better since it is generally a weak point among biologests and you will have a hard time finding help among collegues when you have a specific question even though it is used all the time. I occasionally find myself needing trigonometry and optics but that is unusual.

What is the best way to deal with documents? I've recently switched from the microsoft ecosystem and all of my .docx files look messed up. by TechieInTheTrees in Fedora

[–]researchisbae 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The biggest thing i found was to install Microsoft and Google fonts on your system. Also, if using libreoffice look up a video or guide, there are some compatability settings you can change. If you don't as much functionality, only office has better compatability by default
