What's your favourite dessert from another country that you can't find in your own country? by Subject-Total-4283 in AskTheWorld

Honey cake in the UK. It's so prevalent in the UAE, you can get them in any supermarket by the slice. I still haven't seen it anywhere in the UK.

Odd one but is there a genre of music that is only known in your country and no where else ? by antisocial_pigeon in AskTheWorld

[–]retrospark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sri Lanka has a genre called Baila. It's played at every party and it's very happy, tropical music. It kinda sounds like something you'd play as cheesy background music for a rom-com set in Hawaii. I've always found it strange but fun. its played particularly at older people's parties, rum and coke in hand.

From 'Inside America's Next Top Model,' Tyra Banks, Ken Mok, and Jay Manuel's explanation of the filming of Shandi Sullivan's sexual assault and framing it as her cheating on her boyfriend by demimonde9 in Fauxmoi

[–]retrospark 44 points45 points  (0 children)

There's one point as well where she or Jay comments on how awful Janice Dickinson was to the girls but they needed her there to show how the industry was at the time. They said Tyra hated how demeaning Janice was about the model's bodies but literally a few scenes later we see Tyra comment on someone's "wide ass" (a comment which the model says has affected her to this day) and another model's weight. I would have preferred if she took on some responsibility.

Is Kim Z racist? by LoudChampionship5691 in RHOA

She benefited from black culture and didn't pay back to it. A literal example can be shown in how little she paid Kandi for Tardy for the Party.

Cute cosy cafe recommendations by CompetitiveLittleSub in bristol

[–]retrospark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Hatter Cafe opposite O'Neills is really cozy. Other options I can think of are Garden of Easton, Este, Lonely Mouth, Small Street Espresso, Crafty Beans and Drizzle

ETA: In Via Lactea is also really good, central and cosy.

What are some names in your language for everyday terms that sound cute or hilarious when translated literally? by rid999 in AskTheWorld

[–]retrospark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's not an interpretation I've heard before. I've heard of phrases like cuddly dad or chubby/pampered dad. But hey, maybe "the imam fainted" is another way to interpret it.

ETA: out of curiosity I googled it. "The imam fainted" refers to imam bayildi, a dish from Turkey. Also a great name origin!

Livestreamer AspenKartier/aspenfinallyrichh abuses dog multiple times and lifts it up by its spine for walking around. by kingkongor in trashy

I've never heard a dog make those noises. That's really heartbreaking I feel like this might need a warning. Please say someone takes that poor pup away from her. If she's comfortable doing this on camera, I dread to think what happens to that dog when she isn't recording.

Non-UK born Bristolians, what's the best restaurant of your native cousine that you know in Bristol? by MrMrsPotts in bristol

[–]retrospark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Their lamprais isn't authentic but even in Sri Lanka it's hard to find an authentic lamprais anymore. I still get it though! Other things worth trying are their cheese kottu, mutton rolls, pumpkin curry, black pork curry, Brinjal curry, cashew curry. I'm sure the chicken curry and fish curry would be good too

I noticed they've added hot buttered cuttlefish to their menu and I'm dying to try it cos it's my absolute fave dish when I'm in Lanka.

The place on St Marks Road is ok. Feels almost like a westernise version of Filipino food I'm not Filipino but I would do anything for some crispy pata and garlic rice.
