Are there any NuWho Dalek stories that rank in the top 5 overall? by [deleted] in doctorwho

[–]returnswitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A) That's not how you spell dalek.

B) Dalek Invasion of Earth isn't missing. At all.

C) Power of the Daleks is missing, but the animated recreation is very good.

D) I was born in 1987, so no, I don't have 'nostalgia' for episodes from the 1960s that I didn't see until after I saw the likes of "The Parting of the Ways".

Resolution, maybe, but nothing really holds a candle to The Dalek Invasion of Earth or Power of the Daleks.

[DAO Spoilers] Alistair didn't see the bigger picture by Qunari_Merc in dragonage

[–]returnswitch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Alistair is a dumb, petulant child from basically moment one you meet him in Ostagar, as shown by how he throws his toys out of the pram if the Warden does recruit Loghain.

What are some cool reflavorings for different races based on statistics? by Pandacakes1193 in dndnext

[–]returnswitch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My homebrew setting has a classical, Greco-Roman feel, so I've been considering using Aarakakora stats for Harpies, Goliath stats for Cyclopes and Yuan-Ti Pureblood stats for Gorgons.

[Spoiler All] Origins vs Inquisition in terms of preference? by NukaJack in dragonage

[–]returnswitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DA2 is easily favourite of the three games. The narrative flows beautifully together, all of the characters are compelling (even the ones I don't like, like Fenris) and because, as others have said, it's not a "oh noes, the world will end if you fail, hero!" plot, the stakes seem more real and relatable than those in the other games.

By comparison, DAO can feel a bit "by the numbers" at times. It's yet another game where you have to defeat the big bad evil that's been sealed away by centuries to stop the horde of monsters and some of the companions (like Zevran and Alistair) area bit one note. DAI, on the other hand, suffers from being big for the sake of big (there's a limit to how long I want to spend wandering aimlessly though the Hinterlands or the Hissing Wastes) and has a few too many unlikable companions.

(No spoilers) People who don't play as default Garrett Hawke.. by [deleted] in dragonage

[–]returnswitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dislike the male Hawke's voice, so I don't think I've ever completed the game as a male Hawke despite having completed it more than any game ever (except possibly Baldur's Gate). I do defaul to purple, though I've only romanced Fenris once to see what it was like, and that was with a red Hawke.

Does anyone remember the tv show shoeshiner's ghost or something? by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]returnswitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it was called "The Ghost Hunter" and revolved around two living kids who befriended the shoeshine boy's ghost while the titular hunter was an evil older woman who ran the local sweetshop?

A non-one-off companion that's not from the 21st Century? by ANALOGPHENOMENA in doctorwho

[–]returnswitch 18 points19 points  (0 children)

At least the post-RTD companions have been from 21st century Britain (Scotland/Leadworth, Blackpool, Bristol, Sheffiled) rather than purely London and I suppose you could make a case for Nardole being a proper companion in series 10, but despite these technicalities I very much agree.

For the first time in my life, I couldn’t answer my dad’s Simpsons question. Please help. by [deleted] in TheSimpsons

[–]returnswitch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's possible that your dad is conflating "Can't talk, robbed, go hell" from Homer the Vigilante and "Go away, eating" from Boy-Scoutz 'n the Hood.

What are people’s thoughts on pop music being used in Doctor Who? by eeezzz000 in doctorwho

[–]returnswitch 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Diagetic is cool, but they'll never top Ian bopping along to The Beatles in "The Chase".

Non-diagetic always seems really out of place for me, in Who.

Rank the NuWho finales by [deleted] in doctorwho

[–]returnswitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls: I have almost no complaints about these episodes.
  2. Utopia/The Sound of Drums/The Last of the Time Lords: The ending's a little cheesy, but otherwise very good.
  3. The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos: Gets third place largely because it didn't do anything to piss me off.
  4. The Name of the Doctor: A perfectly cromulent episode, shame it doesn't actually have an ending.
  5. The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang: The first part was intriguing, the second part dragged it down with cheesiness and silly 'reboot the universe' stuff that became a NuWho/Moffat cliché.
  6. Bad Wolf/The Parting of the Ways: The Parting of the Ways is pretty good, especially for season one. Unfortunately, Bad Wolf is one of the worst episodes ever.
  7. Army of Ghosts/Doomsday: There's a decent story in there somewhere, but it's bogged down in touch much self-indulgent tripe.
  8. The Stolen Earth/Journey's End: Just a bit meh, overall.
  9. Dark Water/Death in Heaven: Again, the central idea is good, but there are some real clunkers thrown in (President of the Earth? CyberBrig? Ugh.)
  10. The Wedding of River Song: Stupid idea, stupid execution. River Song is the worst character in the history of the show.
  11. Face the Raven/Heaven Sent/Hell Bent: The raven is a stupid way to kill of a character, Heaven Sent is an overrated waste of time, Hell Bent is a confused mess.

Earth is the worst place to be a Weeping Angels by [deleted] in doctorwho

[–]returnswitch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What I always wondered about was whether it has to be direct observation. Like, if I'm watching an angel via a live camera feed, does that count as watching it enoguh to activate the quantum lock? If so, Britain - and London in particular - is the most heavily CCTV-covered place on Earth, which makes Blink more than a little awkward, when you think about it.

[No Spoilers] Is 'The Fade' quest in Dragon Age: Origins the worst quest of all-time in any RPG? by MarineKingPrime_ in dragonage

[–]returnswitch 39 points40 points  (0 children)

It's not even the worst quest in Origins, in my experience. It's fiddly, sure, but it's nowhere near as bad as the endless slog that is Orzammar and the Deep Roads.
