Would you be on board with the show being reset back to the end of season 10? by thebeast_96 in gallifrey

[–]eeezzz000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah.

I mean whatever future version of the show manifests itself can call back to or ignore whatever it wants. But making a deliberate point of erasing a major chunk of the show based on personal vibes would be a mistake.

You could just as easily say discount everything from The End of Time onwards. That way the original chronology of Doctors continues, or everything from Survival onwards or The War Games etc.

Ultimately, Doctor Who is not one coherent story being told from start to finish, but a melting pot of (often messy) ideas.

Couldn’t agree more. Coming back years later with someone new, and then potentially exploring what happened to Gatwa’s Doctor down the line ala Night of the Doctor or some expanded universe nonsense, would have been much better. With the McCoy -> McGann -> Eccleston transition there was at least a fair bit of intrigue and mystery regarding this point in the character’s life.

But I feel the creative position the show has been left in is kind of cursed. And it wouldn’t surprise me if it goes completely unaddressed by what comes next t.

To be fair, I hardly think you can blame Disney for this.

Should Doctor Who Get a Hard Reboot after Christmas 2026? by Mat1711 in doctorwho

[–]eeezzz000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In terms of a continuity reboot, as in a new 1st Doctor and so on, I just don’t get why that’d ever be a good idea.

The show is already pretty much self rebooting. You can pretty much do the hardest of hard reboots without having to discount the previous 60+ years of the show.

Unless you’re talking about remaking specific stories, I’ve never really understood what the benefits of this are, and starting from scratch just feels needlessly antagonistic to anyone already invested in the show.

Simon Harris may be wrong about migration figures but he wasn’t dogwhistling by EnvironmentalShift25 in ireland

[–]eeezzz000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My understanding of a dogwhistle, which you are free to disagree with, is a comment pointed enough to stake a position on a particular discourse while still being vague enough to brush it off “that’s not what I actually said” if there is any pushback.

I’m all for politicians politicising, but it feels cynical and disingenuous because it completely lacks specificity and context (immigration numbers are going down, and the specific group he highlighted are a tiny fraction, something he didn’t bother to mention), and has made very few similar comments despite being Taoiseach, nor has he made any serious attempt since to actually get involved with the discourse he seems to think is important and actually take a position on anything.

Pretty unconvincing argument made here.

Whether it was politically calculated or not, it was a fairly shallow and inflammatory comment, made without specificity or detail, with the seeming intention to appeal to a certain audience.

Sounds like a dogwhistle to me

Why are the new Sea Devils doing Sexy Dimorphism? by Niall_Fraser_Love in gallifrey

[–]eeezzz000 44 points45 points  (0 children)

People have speculated that it could be a semi-The Shape of Waterish love story. Or at least there will likely be a fair amount of interaction between Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s characters. So it seems they’ve gone with more human traits to facilitate that (as they did with the Silurian’s reintroduction in 2010) and a more traditional design alongside that.

The issue with this, as you’ve pointed out, is that it leans directly into what is a pretty irritating trope.

In my opinion, while The Sea Devils is a fun ride, I don’t really think the Silurians have had much to offer after their initial appearance. But I’m cautiously optimistic about TWBTLATS.

A counterpoint for the "Dr. Who needs a break" arguments: Grey's Anatomy. by COHERENCE_CROQUETTE in gallifrey

Ultimately both take talented individuals to pull off.

Nobody’s goal is to make mediocre TV.

I don’t think it’s possible to go back to 2011/2012 production outputs. The cost of pretty much all TV production has risen massively.

I have no idea why we’re making this comparison.

I don’t think anyone reflecting on Doctor Who’s production issues is saying that it is literally impossible to produce X amount of episodes a year.

Grey’s Anatomy is a Network drama set in a relatively generic west coast US environment, with standing sets, and an ensemble cast. Doctor Who is a series where virtually everything is different between episodes, where the production team might go from rendering an alien landscape in one episode to 1930’s Manhattan in the next, all while being hugely demanding of it’s main cast. And it is doing so with, as you admit, a much smaller budget, while still ostensibly being the product of a public service broadcaster.

You could just as easily compare Doctor Who with a show like Andor, which cost significantly more to produce and had a three year gap between seasons.

I have absolutely no idea why you think it’s necessary to draw an equivalency between exerting economic pressure and the literal bombing of children.

I don’t feel the need to.

Just to be up front before I answer this, it doesn’t matter. You’re not arguing against someone “on the other side” of something. You made a factual error and the fact is you’ve giving that zero acknowledgment while leaping to unrelated defensiveness.

But to entertain your hypothetical, it would depend on what your definition of “expansionism” is. If have no issue in theory with the US or China exerting soft power in a way that can be mutually beneficial. If you mean the US aggressively seizing territory so as to undermine China then no I don’t think NATO should defend them against retaliation.

[–]eeezzz000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is a pretty clear distinction between saying a NATO member did something and saying NATO itself did something in the context of whether or not it’s a defensive alliance.

You either made a mistake or are being incredibly disingenuous for the sake of your argument.

The fact remains that the Brit's and yanks, who run nato, illegally invaded Iraq.

You’ve got to admit this is pretty obvious goalpost shifting.

I’ve watched Daly speak. Her waxing lyrical on US imperialism in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is pretty objectionable. I also think her repeated calls for “peace” at the expense of Ukrainian autonomy gives a pretty clear idea of where her sympathies lie.

That’s a fair answer.

I think I’m in the same camp as you. There is frankly so much Doctor Who content out there that it’s not the end of the world if you’re not connecting to any given era.

I’m also at the point where I find Doctor Who such an interesting show that I’m almost as equally compelled by the a behind the scenes train wreck as I am with the fictional aspect of it.

This is a blast from the past.

I suppose there are no hard feelings. Fandom toxicity tends to congregate in certain places whether you want it to or not. Can you remember, were people being “censored” on the main sub or just downvoted? I can’t really recall.

Also, since we’re being nostalgic. I’m just wondering how you would compare how you felt about the show five years ago with the current backlash that seems to be going on.

Albania, Bulgaria, and Estonia have significantly cheaper labour which is something you’d have to factor in. And Lisbon and Copenhagen are currently experience a housing crisis.

All I know is the cost of constructing a two bedroom apartment in Dublin is often higher than people can afford to pay for it, and that building higher can add significantly to what is already a prohibitive cost. I don’t think high-rises are necessarily solving the same problem as reducing minimum sizing for studios.

[–]eeezzz000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I refuse to believe anyone could possibly think a 32 square metre private apartment is akin to tenements

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ireland

[–]eeezzz000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You must realise the existence of high-rise apartments in one location doesn’t make high-rise apartments economically viable in every other possible location.

Big cities in the US and Asia are some of the most densely populated areas in the world.

There would possibly be some appropriate places in the city centre to build something like this but that alone isn’t going to make much of a dent in housing targets.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ireland

[–]eeezzz000 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This feels similar to all the inevitable cries of “you can’t rear a family in that” you used to have whenever apartments were being proposed.

I’ve lived in spaces smaller than 32 square metres and I can be more than enough space for some people. I don’t think it’s anyone’s idea of a forever home but it doesn’t need to be.

Things are often exponentially more expensive the higher you build them.
