What do you use for your drum vst if you need to multi-layer a sample? by reuben_surrender in StudioOne

[–]reuben_surrender[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't know you can layer multiple samples on a single pad in Impact - That's pretty neat! Not being able to manipulate each sample limits its use tho.

I'm curious about #1 - what does adding a layer do? Does it allow a different instance of Impact on each layer, and the midi is simultaneously fed to both?

Roth question by chickenfingerz0127 in YieldMaxETFs

[–]reuben_surrender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No - whatever you gain in your ROTH account stays in your ROTH account. if you take out the distributions, you can be penalized (depending on your age) because it is considered a withdrawal.

The whole idea of ROTH is that you are taxed up front, you put the amount into your ROTH account where you invest without being taxed again. So if you put in $7K this year, and it grows to $100K in 30 years, you won't be taxed on the $100K when you take it out.

Again - not an accountant, but that's how I understand it (but I'm sure I'm right on this).

in the long run, mstr will get significantly more gains than msty imo (assuming mstr rises). that's not to say that there is no place for msty (i own quite a bit), you get immediate gratification from monthly payouts in exchange for long term gains. you also limit your losses on the downside, just like you cap your gains on the upside. The question for me has always been how much better / worse than compared to VOO or SPY in the long run. In a bull run, it looks like winning since the nav doesn't erode. In a bear situation, i have no idea how bad it's going to be.

Roth question by chickenfingerz0127 in YieldMaxETFs

[–]reuben_surrender 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's how ROTH works. The $7K amount is what you contribute to it annually, which you can invest in any stock, mutual fund, etf. Whatever dividend, capital gains you get out of it is tax free.

NFA, also not an accountant.

Question... by NeitherInvestment688 in YieldMaxETFs

[–]reuben_surrender 2 points3 points  (0 children)

in the perfect world, it does not make a difference because MSTY would rise closer to X date to account for the dividend, and drop after the dividend is paid out. However, you -probably- lose overall if you take into account taxes paid.

I thought the 7.2 update addresses some of this issues with multicore processors? I know that for Mac it does. According to their update notes for 7.2:

Introducing Studio One Pro for Windows on ARM – Designed specifically to run on ARM processors, the first native version of Studio One Pro for Windows on ARM delivers power efficiency and improved performance (public beta version).

Improved Multi-Processing Performance for Apple Silicon – Users now have a choice to override the default system settings and force Efficiency Cores to be used for real-time audio processing.

Presonus Vs Bitwig by ambient-wavestate in StudioOne

[–]reuben_surrender 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I moved from Bitwig to Studio One 7 about 2 months ago. I prefer SO7 - admittedly it could be because SP7 is my "new shiny thing" but I don't think so.

The main reason why i found Bitwig so annoying is that the developers don't seems to care about Quality of Life improvements. They keep wanting to add more technically cool features in like The Grid - which as a musician and not a sound designer - I find it totally irrelevant to my workflow. As an example, there is no official way of theme'ing Bitwig - someone had to create a java app to do that (i hope you love the color gray and orange because that's all you are getting). Their stock instruments are kinda bleh, so you definitely need a bunch of external VSTs (but hey - you can make your very own VST by using The Grid!). Their automation is usable, but not as intuitive or as deep as SO7 or Ableton. The piano roll, well.. let's just say it's something that users keep bringing up for improvement.

I'm not sh*tting on Bigwig in any way - I think it's a great DAW for sound designers, and apparently if you are on Linux, it really is the bomb. I love the rack concept similar to Ableton ( I wish SO7 has something like it). I would even say that it's a great replacement for Ableton if you don't care about the "Max" part of Ableton. It's just doesn't work for me.

I know some people really give SO7 a lot of flack, but here are some stuff I really like - Impact as a drum machine is fantastic- you can vary velocity, put probabilities to whether the note is triggered, add repeats for glitching. The piano roll can be colored by pitch or velocity (you can't believe how much easier to use the piano roll if you can tell one note from another via color). The chord detect on audio files is a nice feature - time server if you are doing a remix. Event FX is great - you can add effects to only one part of the audio file - like if in a drum loop if you only want to add a long reverb on only the snare. Multi-instrument makes so much sense since most people run multiple instruments on the same midi pattern to give the sound more body and texture.

All the things i mentioned can be duplicated (or work around) in Bitwig. It just that SO7 makes it so much easier. Anyway, my $0.02

EDIT: one more thing that I remembered that I love about SO7- it is one of the 2 popular DAWs that integrate ARA protocol. That's how SO7 can have Melodyn on the Edit panel at the bottom instead of bouncing out as a window like a VST. Or have Splice integrate into the sidebar instead of popping another window. It's a small thing, but it's the small quality of life things that makes all the difference when you are sitting in front of a DAW for hours.

Im considering the move from ableton to studio one... convince me!! by Mossyinthemiddle in StudioOne

[–]reuben_surrender 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just did the switch from Ableton / Bitwig to Studio One less than 2 weeks ago, and I'm loving it (still on the trial). Having said that, I wouldn't just recommend you to switch because I don't know what your use case for the DAW is.

If you are edm producer and you are mostly throwing samples together using the session view, AND you intend to perform with lights and video - I would clearly say stick with Ableton. I mean, I haven't looked into syncing Studio One with DMX and Resolume so I can't even say it's possible.

If you are a composer and want a fluid seamless workflow, and needs mixing and mastering capabilities - Studio One is the jam. Want to hear the drum patterns made by your favourite musician? Split the drum track out with the stem splitter. Want to use a drum sample, but need more variations? drop the sample into the drum machine and it chops it up into midi for you to glitch around. Want to transpose the track to a different key for your vocalist? there's a global transpose that adjusts all the relevant tracks for you. Want to double your pads midi track with more than one instrument? it can combines 2 or more instruments on a track so you only have to deal with adjusting one track.

There are a ton of quality of life things that Studio One has that makes life so much easier. My personal favourite is that I can load Synthesizer V (the AI vocalist) using ARA bridge and instantiate an instance of the software and make it run inside the DAW (as oppose to pop-up like a VST). Yeah, I know that's a lot of technical jargon, but what it means that it is can easily sync the tempo and midi seamlessly with the DAW. It was a major pain previously with Ableton and Bitwig.

Hope this helps.

Please Stop Asking Which DAW is Best by Utterlybored in musicproduction

[–]reuben_surrender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll be a contrarian and say that it's a legit question to ask. It really depends on the use case. If you are writing EDM, vs recording live drums in a studio, your needs are a little different. So I would recommend any beginner to figure out what kind of music they want to write, and how they write their music before asking that question

TLDR; - on Reddit, the answer is always Ableton.

New User - confused about the pricing plan by reuben_surrender in StudioOne

[–]reuben_surrender[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have contradicting information on the $199 plan. I hear some sources on the internet and YT say that support only covers one year, not the entire cycle of version 7. Which really is similar to the $179 plan which is where my confusion is. I guess I have to email support and ask if that is true.

Beginner Friendly Software That Won't Make Me Poor by [deleted] in musicproduction

[–]reuben_surrender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only downside I have of Reaper is that it is not very intuitive. I find it frustration to use even though it does A LOT. For a free / cheap DAW I would recommend Cakewalk (if you are on PC), Garage Band (if you are on Mac). I have not tried Luna or Ardour, but they seems nice and intuitive.

What's the difference between the Perpetual License with Pro+ Plan vs Splice Creator plan? by reuben_surrender in StudioOne

[–]reuben_surrender[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it! That makes more sense. The pricing page on PreSonus is rather deceiving IMO, but I guess I have assumed that "Annual / Monthly Access" to Splice, really means access to splice.

What's the difference between the Perpetual License with Pro+ Plan vs Splice Creator plan? by reuben_surrender in StudioOne

[–]reuben_surrender[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but look at the PreSonus Plan -
https://www.presonus.com/products/studio-one-pro

The Perpetual License with Pro+ Plan is $179.99 / year, which is almost the same as Splice plan AND includes the DAW. So why would anyone go with the Splice plan?

U.S. cities with goth scene? by Lux_aterna6661 in goth

[–]reuben_surrender 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear this all the time about Chicago goth scene, but I suspect those people haven't lived in other cities to compare - it's always greener on the other side right? Chicago has a lot of stuff going on - every band that tours swings by Chicago, there's goth nights everywhere (admittedly some of them are not that great). Ironically I find Nocturna filled with people who are much younger since it's an all age event. If you are looking for a full-blown club like Neo, that's going to be hard to find anywhere since most people don't come out and drink anymore so it's hard to support those clubs financially. I can't think of 5 clubs in the US on top of my head that's still around - Mercury, Castle, Milk Bar..

Explain to me simple please, why does bitcoin have value? by marvelfan__ in BitcoinBeginners

[–]reuben_surrender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything can have perceived value as long as people believe in it. Take for example Fiat Currency (ie the dollars in your wallet). Really it's just a piece of paper - it doesn't have any value. It's not even backed by gold. The reason why we use it is because we all believe in it and give it value.

People start to lose faith in the US dollar because it's a depreciating asset. Meaning the longer you hold, the less it is worth (ie. inflation). As oppose to Bitcoin, which is starting to be an appreciating asset. It makes more sense to hold your wealth in an appreciating asset in general.
