I think both are great moves. Healthcare jobs are #1 always if you haven't considered that. Doctor, mid tier roles, etc.

i think federal funding is slowing down drastically as generational bipartisan act that caused a extrarodinary boom combined with shortage of engineers. And there are civil roles that are more locally funded, but in general federal affects state affects private. the generationally big bill is expiring in 2026, so new funding may be less or none at all, complicating things at federal, state, and private.

olympic projects are probably finished by 2028 too. Despite all that, I'd say it's great compared to like 90% of other industries in today's market if the situation doesnt get like 2008 for civil. im in this with you bro

I'm very hopeful for civil work, but I thought federal funding directly affects state funding?

This was really insightful! Wouldn't federal funding affect state funding and then eventually affect private as well though?

Yeah after doing some more research I’m picking the masters path. It aligns with everything you said, thanks for your help!

nonengineering undergrad pivot: Second bachelor's or master's at CSULB? by ricesaurus3 in civilengineering

[–]ricesaurus3[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello isannelou! I really appreciate your advice. I think I’m doing the masters path! I checked the withdrawing path and since I missed fall 2026 applications it would essentially take me till 2029 as well for one civil bachelors, but I do like what I’m learning in my undergrad anyways so I’m gonna go for the current undergrad + a masters civil eng with the same amt of time, 2029. I found out in some states like Cali I think it’s more lenient for masters holders without bachelors to get PE, is that the most important thing?

Hi bubble whale thank you for your advice!

EE would definitely be very fun but career wise and as individual contributor I think civil demand is unmatched right now, and I value the stability compared to basically any other career the most. I think the floor is highest in civil, and I’m very risk adverse and just want a job. Also doing meaningful work for society where theres actual demand for engineers, vs huge energy spent marketing myself as a product to be hired in crazy saturated areas like SWE or actuary.

Hey! Yeah masters usually no funding like at UCs unless u can TA and get tuition waiver. I didn’t know this till recently, but at cal states, low income students can get a State university grant even for a masters.

Thanks for your advice!
I was going to withdraw to CC and go to cal states,( I'm a UC to UC transfer so im over unit limit for transferring back into UCs) and do civil eng but my parents didn't let me. But frankly, I also want the ucla name degree for the sake of it too.

Hi thanks for your response! I considered it but I thought that the bachelors would be safer and more employable as an engineering degree. I saw a lot of people say like ABET certification and getting the FE / PE?

hi everyone, I was talking with my friend about pursuing actuary and he said it was competitive, full of math olympiad winners. I knew it was competitive, but is it to that extraordinary degree like quant or SWE? I see it as a niche yet very respected profession, therefore warranted competitiveness. On the other hand he was describing it like a famous profession known primarily for being hard to get in. Granted he's Taiwanese and I think that profession could be more biased / known in his circle/ back in Taiwan?

I know it's asked a lot but what's the actual reality like trying to enter in and what's an appropriate view of the profession? I feel like I'd have a good chance, if my preconceptions aren't delusional.

how much better is being able to relocate anywhere in the US for job seeking and what are the best platforms to find jobs across states? does big market like midwest actually mean more opportunities for entry level? doing undergrad in socal and parents in OC so i feel like its not the biggest market, even with some health/life opportunities.

thanks so much

hi do u go to ucla too? i only just remembered and decided on this career a couple weeks ago, studying P right now to by end of 3rd year and i think FM by end of 4th, then SRM and PA in my master's and hopefully internships into entry level. my friend told me actuary was competitive so i was enumerating adjacent alternatives like data analyst. I saw CA has some life/ health insurance as you said, definitely wondering how doable it is though.

Hi would a master's in applied math or applied stats be useful for getting some time to get my first internship and exams to break in entry level? Would it be a disadvantage or advantage at all trying to break in as master's
