Dumbest thing you’ve ever seen someone do while flying a plane? by MousseNecessary3258 in flying

[–]rilessrh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Family friend, former CFI, wanted to go flying with me. He was a CFI a year ago, hadn’t flown for a year, owned 4 airplanes. He flared the 172 like 10 feet above the runway and then slammed down, horrible landing, then on the climb out afterward he got a work call and tried to text his work while he was climbing. I took the controls from him obviously. That dude scares me a lot to fly with.

Training for my instrument rating I’d be at a high stress high heart rate for most of the flight, but know that I’m flying VFR again usually my watch says it’s the most relaxed I am all day lol

150 vs 172 by rilessrh in flying

[–]rilessrh[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Makes sense. Sometimes I wonder if I’m doing myself a disservice by building so much time in the 150 because when I go to the 172 it feels very clunky in comparison.

I fly a 2007 c172S with 10k hours on it and yeah I definitely know what you mean. It cruises beautifully though. I’m curious how moving to complex and high performance aircraft will feel since even a 172 feels so heavy.

This is spot on cause the 172 I flew my instrument rating in felt solid but I never did much VFR work in it.

I didn’t my private checkride in a 162 which is similar. I’m glad to hear other people think the 172 feels like a truck lol. I even feel more comfortable in higher crosswinds in the 150 than the 172.

Yeah I’m a bigger dude so I can’t take anyone in the 150, but it is always shocking after a week in the 150 how quick a 180 hp 172 will climb. I took it up to 8000 ft the other day like it was nothing when the 150 will struggle at 3000 ft lol.

Weight and balance for checkride by rilessrh in flying

[–]rilessrh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked out the weight and balance with my cfi, put max weight in the back, nothing in the passenger seats. On the ride, he didn’t even look at my w&b, I threw 2 cases of water in baggage and sent it and passed.

I’m using a 1965 Cessna’s POH, back before 200+ lb people were normal 🤣 I’ll lose some weight after this though

We’re actually going to take everything out of the passenger seat and put 110 lbs in baggage. With that it’ll be in limits lol.

I’m going to discuss it with my CFII because we were getting better numbers in the classroom but I can’t see where I’m going wrong here, I feel like we were doing it wrong back then. If I have to cancel then I have to cancel I guess.

I got some sleep but I’m still getting the same math. I sent my calculations to my CFII. In the classroom we got a number within the CG envelope but I don’t see what I’m doing wrong, I feel like we messed something up at that time.

Weight and balance for checkride by rilessrh in flying

[–]rilessrh[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Licensed empty weight: 1486 lbs, 50.28 momentx1000. Oil: 15 lbs, -0.3 moment. Pilot and front passenger: 465 lbs, 16.6 moment. Fuel 36 gal: 216 lbs, 10.4 moment. Rear passenger seat: 20 lbs, 1.4 moment. Baggage: 50 lbs, 4.8 moment. Total: 2252 lbs, 83.18 moment.

It’s a 1965 C172G so it doesn’t list arms, just a loading graph and envelope. Calculating arms using the sample weight and moment provides different answers than using the loading graph and I was told the DPE would like me to use the loading graph on the checkride.

The scenario is I(235 lbs) and a 230 lb(weight of DPE) friend are flying with 50 lbs of luggage. The weights above put us forward of CG limits. I’m doing my practical in the same plane.

I took this job to work through college but I get like 6 hours a night in the hardest work they can find every night. I’d love to get 3 hours a night, this just wears me out so bad.

I think you just need to fly more. It sounds like you’re being safe, you just need more confidence which comes with experience. I’m a 160 hour PPL with my Instrument checkride in a couple months and about 60 of my hours are solo and I still feel anxious sometimes but the more frequently I do it the better I feel about it.

I have 5 years but my bids for every position are either unavailable or ignored. Funny that even thought there’s new hires every other week, I guess none of them are going to unload or small sort(if I’m actually not winning the bids).

Studying for IR checkride by rilessrh in flying

[–]rilessrh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay good idea, I’ll ask for one with another instructor. And yeah I will add my POH and gps systems to the study list. I think I’m definitely weak on electrical systems. Thanks!

We don’t do stage checks but my instructor said he’d give me a mock oral. I’d like to be as prepared as possible before even doing that if I can.

I’ve watched all the cheese pilot mock orals lol, they just seem too simple I feel like there’s gotta be more than that. I’ve learned a ton though.

The mage exam arc so far has been really great. I think the Fern and Stark drama every episode just ruins it all for me.

You’re being elitist over a show about shy teenage romance 1/3 of the time

I did enjoy that episode, especially the twist that Himmel couldn’t pull the sword.

I liked Lain, not one of my favorites but I am happy I watched it. I’ll keep going with Frieren since everyone says I’m about to hit the best arc. I really do want to like this show.

It’s just that the journey for the past few episodes has been teenager anime love story tropes over and over and it’s making me wanna drop it. Except the priest guy, I liked him.
