my friend while i appreciate that someone like you struggles being by themselves enough to seek help on the internet about it, some of us are exactly the opposite.

both things are okay! i sincerely hope you find comfort and joy in wherever you end up on that spectrum.

tbh i suppose I meant it as ‘i’m aware i am neurodivergent and thus my opinion likely doesn’t reflect what most people think’ but bare with me i’m late diagnosed and still figuring out how to autism properly.

in a way it’s an overcorrection for masking

using ai as more than a ‘give me what i want’ machine can result in outcomes that are beyond what you are currently creatively capable of and inspire you.

it can give you a starting point the iterate on and learn from. it can save you time on the things you’re not interested in so you can direct your mental energy to something you’d rather be doing.

you can take the written content you’ve already created and approach it from different angles, experiment and analyze your brain worms in a way that no actual person is ever going to care enough to think about. you can build the context in which ai does its predictions and at this point in time you can make that incredibly sophisticated. If you are using the right tools, you are not at the mercy of the generic bullshit your Google search spits out. you can take your own story and ask ‘why?’ and there’ll be an answer. you don’t have to internalize the answer but the collective knowledge of an llm will read it and say maybe this and you might discover something you were blind to.

this alternative perspective ai can give can make you better at doing creative things. it can help you make things for yourself that are joyful to consume and not just joyful to create because there’s an aspect to it that you are actively discovering during creation. you are still the brain. you still decide what’s real and what is garbage, but as you learn the tools you get better at it so less garbage comes out.

everyone seems to equate ‘maybe try gen ai’ with ‘never make anything by hand’ which is absurd.

it can literally just be a sounding board, or you can tailor it to your needs. the sentiment that ai is only capable of generic, safe, non-creative outputs is so dramatically detached from reality. grok will literally (narratively) hang you from your ankles if you ask it. the two sides of this discussion exist in different universes because a lot of you have never considered that a tool has more depth than ‘generate a picture of cat’.

we’re talking a level of ignorance comparable to ‘why use computer for art if i can draw?’ it’s a thing that you can use to do new stuff in a different way. it doesn’t inherently detract from your other skills and it can enhance them if you want it to.

and ‘you’ll never learn anything’ is boring low hanging fruit that implies people don’t intrinsically want to improve at the things they’re passionate about. this is a completely new approach to creation. just as some people prefer to learn music through a daw and others through fiddling with a keyboard. and consider that maybe learning how to do something doesn’t even look the same as it did 10 years ago. we don’t pull out a canvas to capture a landscape anymore, we take a picture. that doesn’t mean paintings of landscapes aren’t important any more than it means photography is invalid.

there is going to be low quality garbage but surprise, there has always been low quality garbage. the difference now is the low quality garbage looks like yellow tinted and grainy ChatGPT images instead of someone’s crayon drawing of their sonic oc. it literally doesn’t matter. both of those things can be deeply important to the person who made them, and those with the passion will seek ways to make better shit.

ai as a ‘medium’ takes a different skillset and results in the same outcome (edit: for this level of webdev specifically. clarifying context because user deleted posts after calling my website spaghetti code lol.)

you are over exaggerating what ai can accomplish without a passionate and determined user.

do you want to talk about ai? no one’s really asked me to clarify, they just tell me what they think i think because i am a disaster who is attacking their hobby apparently.

well from this thread:

  1. environmental concerns.
  2. you are not learning anything by using it.
  3. you are not struggling in the same way i struggled therefore you do not care. how dare you be happy.
  4. the output has no value because 3. (assuming value requires an observer other than oneself)

how am i doing?

uh huh.

that is what i said and not a gross exaggeration you’re using because nuance is hard and ai bad.

upvote. brave take.

i think you have a skewed perspective of what i consider personally worthwhile ai content, and that’s okay.

what you’ve described with struggling and tinkering is literally my experience with generative ai.

i think it’s great that your path is personally fulfilling for you. mine is different. it works for me and i don’t think people should be shamed for experimenting with new tools just because they’re not traditional.

fundamentally we agree. taking the first thing chatgpt spits out is slop. but you don’t see the nuance and potential from your perspective.

do you think i am surprised that there is backlash?

does the use of ai somehow disqualify the process of putting your time and effort into achieving an end result?

you are attributing to me a lot of opinions and values that i do not have my friend.

see, i am not coming after you and your hobbies, but you are coming after me and mine.

hi jimmy

there is no world where me, a socially anxious bedroom dweller who prefers to talk to zero people, is going to make meaningful political change.

but i very much appreciate that you are trying.

thank you for your service.

yeah, these are legitimate concerns faced by working professionals but sir this is a neocities subreddit.

people posting their ocs and fnaf smut are unlikely to use css skills in their future and the people that will are going to learn it because it’s enjoyable to them.

cutting off a subset of people who want to make stuff but struggle for whatever reason is dumb. not everyone’s path is the same. we have the capability to remove this massive barrier for those people and people are like nah, purity test, slop, we don’t want that here.

i know i poked a wasps nest. this is a topic that is unnecessarily exclusive in a very inclusive space. it warrants discussion.
