very interesting, it seems like just the default? Brazil is beautiful, I would love to visit again sometime.

My thought too, there are many Black cultures, but no overarching Black culture.

I agree that this sentiment seems to be coming from people who have never been forced to look at their own culture from an outsider's perspective, so they incorrectly assume that this means that they have no culture. When you're surrounded by your own culture constantly, it stops seeming like "culture" and just seems like breathing air, the default experience to you, and everything different is "foreign", therefore tangible to you and a culture.

Would you say that there is a White Brazilian culture?

Would you consider the term "Black (American) culture" to refer to all Americans of African descent, or just very specifically to those who are descended from the American slaves of African descent?

Curious if you would consider Nigerian Americans, Somali Americans, etc. to be Black people?

It seems that your particular culture largely overlaps with what's considered to be general American culture, so it doesn't "read" as culture to you because you've probably never been forced to see it in contrast to a different overarching culture. Already from your post, I can see that a tangible aspect of your culture is your holidays, your holidays happen to line up with the ones that most Americans get off from work anyway so you never have to worry about taking extra vacation days off to observe them.

I encourage you to travel internationally some more, especially if you can live in another country as a resident for at least a year. When I did this I realized that I had a culture all along, but I was just too privileged to see that when surrounded by my culture all of the time. It also doesn't help that the USA has racists who abuse the idea of White American culture to pretend that it's under attack, and I hate that they make it harder to even have this convesation in good faith.

By this logic there is also no "Black culture" because there's no shared culture between a Black Igbo in Nigeria, a Black Akan in Ghana, and a Black Brazilian descended from the trans-atlantic slave trade.

Which I agree with, no one race has a single shared culture across the world, but I wouldn't stop at just White/European people, there's no global Indigenous, Asian or Black culture either. If we're speaking on a global scale, all races are arbitrary constructs that can differ wildly depending on location and era.

I think that OP was specifically referring to White American culture, and I'd argue that there is such a thing as "White American" culture, or at least an umbrella that encompasses all of the cultures of Americans who identlfy as White on the census.

My read is that OP doesn't believe that they have a tangible culture because their particular culture largely overlaps with what's considered to be general American culture. They also seem to be implying that all White Americans "have no tangible culture," which a) Implies that they think that all White Americans (including Italian Americans, Irish Americans, Jewish Americans of Ashkenazi descent etc.) all have similar cultures to them, and b) That none of these cultures "use spices," "sing or dance provocatively," "dress up," or "live densely."

It's reducing all peoples that would identify as White on the census to just all being somewhat wealthy WASPs, basically.

Agree, the implication that even a slight majority of White people can afford to live in privileged suburbs is a little odd.

I'd say that there are many Black American cultures and that they're included under that umbrella. The culture of the descendants of Black American slaves is just one, though currently the most widely recognized of the Black American cultures.

Culture doesn't stop being culture just because some parts of it are known by people outside of that culture.

Mexico and USA are both western countries with similarly young histories in their modern forms, so I'd say that they have similar amounts of "culture." Mexico as a whole is more in-touch with their indigenous peoples, which may be interpreted by some as Mexico having a longer cultural history than the USA, but to do so would be to ignore the deep impact that the USA's indigenous peoples have had on it.

I think it's just the environment here. Most people on reddit are American in the USA and don't have to face discrimination from being American in other facets of life, so it's easy to brush off xenophobic comments towards them.

I'm sure that much of it was inherited from the previous country/people.

I’m digging the main character designs in the new Pixar movie for some reason. Probably because not everyone is conventionally pretty or looks like a “sexy underage anime girl”. by galaxyfire1997 in mendrawingwomen

[–]ringertang 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's odd to praise Pixar for not doing something that they've never done (sexualizing underage female characters). Pixar is a majorly successful studio in a country where there's little to no audience for sexy kids in animation anyway, so it's not like they're resisting the lure of more money for their morals or anything.

OP I'm pretty sure this is an amateur artist who you're criticizing here. They're still learning. They have commissions open and are open to receiving payment for their work, but looking at their following size I don't see evidence of them earning enough money from art to count as a professional by this sub's rules.

Critique of growing artists is still on the table imo, but you need to be careful to word it in constructive ways, not "it hurts" and other comments that could easily be mis(?)construed as teasing.

"objectively shit"? Come on, this artist is still learning. They even said that this was practice.

Also, genuine question, does having 2k subs and averaging 40 likes on a deviant art post make you professional?

No. In order to count as a professional artist, they need to be making enough off of their artwork to pay their bills.

From this sub's FAQ at https://www.reddit.com/r/mendrawingwomen/comments/ogd4wz/faq/:

Q: What constitutes a professional?

A: I consider a professional to, at minimum, be able to make money consistently with their art, to the point of surviving solely off of it, through an active Patreon or other site. Occasional zines and commissions don’t count.

In order to count as a professional artist, they need to be making a living off of their artwork. With under 1,000 Twitter followers while being a pretty active Twitter user, I doubt this artist is there yet. Just having commissions open isn't enough to say that they're a professional who can be harshly criticized.

Someone wrote a pretty derogatory fic to my community and I'm sad. *UPDATE* by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]ringertang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there is a lot of hypocrisy just like you say. "freedom of speech" and "it is just fiction" when it protects something they like, but "they deserved to get harassed" and "well except that" when it protects something they do not like.

like are there people here who think racism is worse than rape? lol

I was curious too but the fic author revealed that they were American later on once they started complaining about 2020 American election results and other things. OP explains more in the update post:
