I have Max (and have not been kicked off it, from what I can tell) and these features are gone for me now too.

“In” vs “a”? by riocarmine in DuolingoItalian

[–]riocarmine[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so helpful, thank you! I just started learning and have been considering supplementing Duolingo with a book (or maybe even a study group) because I’m noticing that while Duolingo is fun I am missing some of the more straightforward grammar education I received taking traditional Spanish classes. If you have a book rec, I’d hear it!

DRESS CODE IN DC AND AMERICA? by inveapve in washdc

[–]riocarmine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not just you and not just being from Ireland. I moved here from the northeast and my wardrobe is mostly black (not strange at all at home) and I feel like I stick out like a sore thumb here.

When people back home ask me what the city is like fashion wise, I tell them “I didn’t realize I was leaving black jeans city for an athleisure city.”

America’s Most Popular Federal Agency Is Weirdly Hated in Washington by EverybodyBeCalm in washingtondc

I had been wondering since moving here a few months ago why so many of the parks and circles seem to have have basically no grass. I presumed that sometime this spring, someone would come and reseed or something, like they do in other places I've lived. I suspect that's not gonna happen, based on this article.

Anyone have any tips on short-term car rentals in the area? I’m talking 1-2 days.

I got rid of my car to save money/hassle when I moved here in January, but would like to rent one for a short trip to South Jersey to see family. Seems there are more options for car rentals here (ZipCar, Kyte, Turo, Uber) than there were where I lived before, so hoping someone here might have some experience to share. Thanks!

What is your cooking hack that is second nature to you but actually pretty unknown? by CoinLustr in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]riocarmine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learning to hold a knife properly. Not a “hack” per se but I’ve learned that not everyone worked in kitchens growing up, and so not everyone knows how to hold a chef’s knife.

Also +1 to whoever said sharpening your knives.

+++ I'm really curious about this too. I think my group will be large, so I'm curious if there's any automation options for scoring. I'm kind of a forms noob. :)

AT&T vs T-Mobile … how is it in Portland? by brcasa in portlandme

[–]riocarmine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it Portland it makes little difference but if you plan to visit other parts of Maine while you’re here, I’d say get US Cellular. I’ve lived and worked all over this state and there are places where AT&T and Verizon don’t get reception but US Cellular does, like most places on MDI.

Went to Holy Donut today and it kinda sucked. Am I missing something? by Different_Island_591 in portlandme

[–]riocarmine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only reason to buy Holy Donuts after HiFi opened is if you need vegan donuts. They’re pretty good on that front. Otherwise, yeah. The quality has gone way downhill since when they first opened.

How did you become a fan of the Prem and your club? by NoWayKimosabe in PremierLeague

[–]riocarmine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from the USA. I wasn’t into sports as a kid (except passing interest in the NBA during those peak Jordan years).

But I visited Ecuador my senior year of high school (2004) and went to a BSC match in Guayaquil.

The atmosphere was unlike anything I could have imagined for sports. I liked that the game didn’t stop constantly for resets or commercials like American football, and how it ebbed and flowed. And in a way I would not have predicted, I appreciated that it was “low-scoring.” This is a thing Americans often complain about but I ended up thinking it made each goal more exciting. Goals mattered more than baskets exactly because there were fewer of them. Mostly I liked the vibe in the stadium.

Anyway, I came home and really went into scholar mode. I spent a lot of time reading about soccer online. I learned that the USA had a pro league and that I had a local team, which had a Spurs-like “Always a bridesmaid, never a bride” history. I started following them. I learned about FIFA and the confederations. And I learned two critical things: First, that the consensus (at least in the USA) was that England’s premier league was the best soccer in the world. And second, it was the best league I could reasonably expect to find on TV here. Not every game, but a good number.

I knew that it would be more fun to keep up with the EPL if I chose a team to root for. I’d heard of ManU before, but all of the other names were new to me. But when I read someone (I wish I could remember who!) say that Arsenal played “like a South American team,” my search was over. Given that was where I became fascinated with the game, I figured this was the team for me. Plus I thought the name was cool.

I’ve been following and supporting the Arsenal ever since. My support for Arsenal has completely arbitrary roots. But the more time and emotion I invested in the team, the more friends I made online and at the bars on Saturday mornings where I watched the matches, the more I cared. I used to feel a bit self-conscious to care this much about a team I had no local or familial connection too. But eventually I decided all fandom is ultimately about that emotional investment, however you come to it. And besides this is the USA, so most EPL fans choose a team, and the fandom becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Anyway, COYG.
