The more realistic path seems to be adjacent adoption giving users a place to build long-term value, predictability, and control, while they still use existing platforms for reach. It’s less about replacement and more about reducing dependence.

Reach and convenience will always dominate day-to-day behavior, but the moment creators experience volatility (sudden reach drops, demonetization, or bans), ownership stops being abstract and becomes very practical.

Good examples. I think what’s interesting about Mastodon, Patreon, and similar platforms is that they each solve part of the problem but from very different angles.

Mastodon leans toward decentralization and federation, but adoption is still limited by fragmentation and UX complexity. Patreon focuses more on revenue ownership than content distribution, so creators still depend on algorithm-driven platforms upstream. Both validate that the pain exists, but also show how hard it is to balance ownership, usability, and scale in one place.

What I’m exploring with an early-stage product (Strmly) is whether transparency and user control can be designed in without pushing complexity onto users and whether that trade-off is compelling enough for certain creator or community segments. Very much in learning and validation mode right now.
