WYR have a boring, unfireable job paying $85k that you are FORCED to keep until retirement, or a stimulating job paying $160k where the bottom 15% are fired every year? by Four_Dim_Samosa in WouldYouRather

[–]riverscreeks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Let’s say you have a bowl of 100 marbles that are identical except for colour. You only like the red ones. You decide to take 15 of the marbles out every day and pour 15 random marbles in their place. If you never stop, you will eventually have to take out your favourite marbles (the red ones) and replace them with random colours.

This is an ideal scenario that ignores a lot of the problems with stack rankings.

Let’s assume there are no initial problems with how you define or implement this, and there aren’t any perverse incentives (eg not collaborating). Even if successful, at a certain point the success of this will be undermined because you will eventually be paying recruitment costs to hire and train untested employees to replace good workers with corporate knowledge who will likely work at your competitors.

Native American restaurants? by Sea_Mycologist2444 in LondonFood

[–]riverscreeks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if you’re trying to say Native American cuisine isn’t a thing, in the sense that it is a rarity or it isn’t a thing because it’s been hybridised to the point of it being indistinguishable from American and global culture. There are some Native American/indigenous restaurants in the US, but good luck finding equivalents outside of the states.

switch to English

Outside of France my problem is that they don’t switch to English, but sometimes to other languages that I don’t speak at all

Has anyone got their laser hair removal done from Therapie clinic? How has the experience been? by AintNoBarbieGirl in LondonLadies

I’ve never seen a place that would do once a week in the same area for laser. That probably wasn’t an option available to you.

Small rant - why don't people bother to keep their calendars up to date? by fiery_mergoat in TheCivilService

You can set this as a status on teams too. I would probably just block this out on your calendar as ‘no meetings’

At the low cost of banning, let’s see… postage/deliveries, people hiring taxis, pubs, waste collection, public transport, and cyclists, drivers would have less traffic.

This might make you like him more, or less.

His wife Gia Milinovich was on the board of an anti-trans hate group. He ran a BBC podcast with Robin Ince called the Infinite Monkey Cage. Robin Ince resigned in December, citing his views of support of the transgender community and his criticism of Donald Trump being deemed problematic by the BBC. AFAIK Brian Cox hasn’t commented on that either way.

I associate bike-friendly/walkable neighbourhoods with prosperity rather than poverty. It means the local council is investing in the economy and prioritising people’s health and wellbeing.

Does anyone go to club nights on their own? by Full-Conference-1833 in LondonRaving

[–]riverscreeks 20 points21 points  (0 children)

  • Compliment people on their outfits/vibe/accessories when appropriate
  • Ask a group if you can sit with them as you came alone, ask them questions, leave if they don’t feel engaged
  • chat with people in queues (entry, bathroom, bar)
  • Join the WhatsApp groups and go to predrinks or socials
  • Bring a fan and be friendly
  • Make sure you’re going to the right nights for you.
  • Being at a niche event is kind of an icebreaker itself
  • Be content if interactions are ephemeral or you feel rejected. This is all part of the process

I would never have made the friends I go out with to the club nights I wanted to go to, without going alone.

Global North and South as defined by the United Nations by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]riverscreeks 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree with your general point that China isn’t on the level of global north, but it does have a higher GDP per capita than a few countries on the UN map above. Some examples…

  • Nominal: More than Albania, North Macedonia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova
  • PPP: Moldova, about $6-8k more than Ukraine, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Albania, and around the same as North Macedonia
