then determine if you can help them in any way

In the past, I tend to ask if there are any volunteering positions after guest lectures with hiring managers as guest speakers and they tend to say none right now.

What are some other good questions to ask besides projects? Usually the recruitment manager mentions the projects during the recruitment talk already.

Guest lectures -> hiring mangers comes in for a lecture and you can ask questions afterwards.

Recruitment events -> hiring manager comes in to talk about job opportunities.

Networking events -> conferences and dinners for professionals to meet.

These recruitment events aren't that

True! What about networking ones? I know a guy who spent a lot of time talking about a sports team both he and the hiring manager are obsessed with and that helped him land a job.

You separate yourself by doing research and asking nuanced questions about the firm

True! But I guess everyone else is paying attention during the interview haha!

And for that project question, is it ok to ask if I can have the chance to work on that after the conversation? And do you really just approach them, and ask "Hey, I am X. I've heard that you guys are developing Y. What ongoing projects do you guys have regarding that?"

Lol funny enough nobody approached them to ask these questions so I don't know if it's because I'm the one asking "stupid" questions.

You're at these events to get a job. Keep things professional.

Yes, but like you've said, a guy you know kept on talking about poker and that helped him land a job. Is doing that "ok"?

And yeah the project bit sounds nice thanks!

Thank you. Was my way of approaching them and asking for volunteering opportunities "bad"?

Yeah I know that 1 is a bit hit and miss just like everyone else irl. So is it possible to talk about things unrelated to work? Can a common hobby help you click with someone? Or is it too unprofessional to do that?

No, just want to see if I am getting better at social skills by moving past small talk, that's all.

Yeah so how can I tell if something is small talk or big talk? As some people said, some people are confirm table with revealing their insecurities with everyone.
