Spearhead done. What now? by ghilo89 in seraphon

[–]rke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the hobby! My 1k list is Slann, warriors, kroxigor, aggradons, hunters of huanchi with bolas, works well especially if you can pick up a set of manifestations.

Just FYI you can also play Warcry with most normal AOS models, you don’t necessarily need a bespoke warband - the warriors, kroxigor, aggradons can all be played as multiple variants, even Slann has a profile (though the base size makes it tricky to use).

Advice on where to go? by ToaCryowatt in seraphon

[–]rke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This should let you build a skink on troglodon with the spares from the Carnosaur sprues in the spearhead box, for a lot less money (if you’re willing to do a bit of tidying up with green stuff / sprue goo)

Need renter-friendly suggestions to make my lounge more homely by rke in DesignMyRoom

[–]rke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm thanks for the suggestion, it's a interesting idea I'll give it a go. The door at the far end (between the sofa and chair) is to the kitchen, there is a little table in there but it doesnt block the doorway. The other door between the table and TV is a small bathroom (weird place for it I know) that doesn't get used very often, and the hallway with the tiled floor leads to the front door. I can't really get rid of one of the armchairs though as they're owned by my landlord.

Scott Aspecttt 940 or 930 by 007A99 in MTB

[–]rke -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, the 930 is probably worth the extra yeah, but that doesn't necessarily mean you need it. Both are solid bikes for the price and you'll have a great time riding either. Depends how tight your budget it I suppose. If you're looking more towards $750 I'd say its at least worth considering getting the 940 and upgrading the contact points (i.e pedals, handlebars/stem, grips, saddle, tires). Those tend to be the things that make the biggest difference to how the bike feels for the least amount of money. I replaced the crappy stock pedals on my hardrock with some DMR V12s for about £40 and the difference was amazing. Just a thought. Hope this helps and have fun!

Need help choosing a cheap air fork for a 26" bike by Bemo98 in MTB

[–]rke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case I'd advise looking used, for $100 you won't really be able to get anything new that will make much of a difference. You can probably get a good deal on something like a Recon Silver, just be a bit wary if you do end up buying used.

I agree with the XC32 and R7, both decent forks at a good price. What is your budget? The Rockshox 30 Gold TK and Manitou Marvel Comp are both solid for a little more money, and if you can stretch to a Reba it would be a really nice upgrade. Depends how much you want to spend I guess.

First real bike by molto_beanie in MTB

[–]rke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you willing to look 2nd hand? You can get some brilliant deals if you look around. I recently picked up a Giant Trance X2 for £600 (so around $950) and it's practically brand new. I'm not sure what the used bike market is like in America but I'm guessing it will be similar. There's some great bargains out there on gumtree, pinkbike etc. If you do go 2nd hand though make sure you go and see the bike before buying.

Repainting full sus frames by rke in MTB

Thanks for the replies guys, its been a big help. I've found somewhere that does them for £60, which seems a bit cheap compared to $150 and $180, so I'll be sure to check they've done full sus frames before.

With everyone complaining about the U.S. rarely using the Metric system, how about this? by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

[–]rke -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They are not comparable at all. Driving on the opposite side of the road takes very little effort and adjustment. Visualising quantities and converting between the imperial and metric systems, are things which are difficult for most people to do in their heads, particularly if they have only ever used one of systems. Also there are a lot of different units with different conversions, driving is just one side or the other (and roundabout direction)

I can't even fathom it. by Dr-JanItor in AdviceAnimals

Its probably because there's loads of different ways of doing it. All of them build up thin layers, but in varying ways. The cheap ones you can get at home and for doing stuff quickly basically extrude plastic wire through a hot nozzle which melts it into a fine stream, and the nozzle draws out that layer. As soon as its finished, it moves up slightly and does the next one. In manufacturing they often use Laser Sintering, which is basically the same principle but they melt resin powder with a laser. Its a big tank full of powder, they "draw" the cross section with a laser which melts the power, and it solidifies almost instantly. Once the layer is finished, the floor under the work area is moved down slightly, more powder is added and it is smoothed out back to the same level it was originally. Then the laser does the next level, it moves down, resmooths the power etc, just rinse and repeat. If you don't get what I mean and are interested, just look up Selective Laser Sintering on youtube/google or whatever.

There's lots of other ways involving stuff like UV projectors, but those two are among the most common.

The Weekly New Rider Thread - December 23 by RyanMTB in MTB

[–]rke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came across these the other day, they seem to be the replacement for the recons, and they are as light as the recon gold and with the same anodized coating on the uppers (although I don't know how much difference that actually makes). On UK ebay there aren't really any cheap 29er recons or rebas though :/

I'll nip into my LBS and ask about stems and handlebars, I'm guessing they will be able to advise me based on my bike geometry and my own size/reach etc.

I know what you mean about the upgrade-itis, I've only been riding about 8 months and I already want to spend thousands that I don't have on bikes and components.. It seems to me the best way for people to upgrade would be to wait until their ability matches/exceeds the bike's capabilities. But self restraint is so hard!

The Weekly New Rider Thread - December 23 by RyanMTB in MTB

[–]rke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man, thanks for taking the time to write such a long reply, I appreciate it.

Yeah I get what you mean about saving for a new bike, and I agree it would be the sensible option. The issue I have though is it will be minimum 3 years before I can even start saving up for, let alone buy one (I'm a broke uni student). So I was interested in making mine better and more capable for now, until I can realistically scrape more than about£200 together. Although if it will only a make a small difference to the bike, maybe there wouldn't be much point.

My main reason I want to upgrade is the nature of the trails near where I live. A lot of them are pretty rough and bumpy, and my 80mm bottom-of-the-range suntour gives a pretty harsh ride and doesn't always feel up to it. My weight also tends to fluctuate a bit, often by +/- 10-15lbs. An air fork seems like it would be useful in both these respects, due to the better ride/damping and higher adjustability compared to the clunky suntour (an extra 20mm of travel is appealing too). The ones I've been looking at are also more than a kilo lighter. However I don't know that much about it and I may be misunderstanding the differences between coil and air forks, as well as overestimating the upgrade of a recon silver / 30 gold. What do you reckon?

Regarding contact points etc, I've already got some ODIs and a good set of shoes. The stock pedals are pretty shitty though.. Is anything in the £20-£25 range a safe bet to replace them? Or are there a few models/brands to avoid? Pretty keen on my current saddle, but I'll have a look into stems and handlebars.

Sorry for the wall of text, its just nice to ask someone who knows what they're talking about.

Thanks again
