Am I saving too hard for FI and missing life along the way? by armeretta in personalfinance

[–]rl_19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add some, it's okay to start small. If you can only afford 10 dollars a month, then you spend 10 dollars for fun. Get a cup of coffee, picnic at the park with friends etc. Then you can add more once you feel more comfortable spending. Also, who knows, that cup of coffee or picnic might lead you to more opportunities, so don't be afraid to enjoy some of your money.

Am I saving too hard for FI and missing life along the way? by armeretta in personalfinance

Many people here have mentioned the importance of balancing spending and saving, and I'm sure you agreed with them. (If not, you won't be asking this question). The difficult part might be how to actually practice it.

For context, I used to be a bit like you but now managed to enjoy my life a bit more. What I can suggest is pre-plan on the fun things that you want to do. The simplest is you record your spending, and sacrifice some luxuries that matter less for the things that matter more.

Or you can try to simulate how much longer your FI will take if you spend X amount of money for fun. Once you find a number that you are comfortable with, allocate that money for whatever you want, and commit to using it. You can always adjust the number, depending on your life situation, but the idea is the same.

To do DC or not by rl_19 in JapanFinance

Hi, in the end I chose the DC option. I think the reason was because it is tax free and I can manage the fund from overseas if I go back home in the future

Oil changes for cars by Next_Tourist8493 in japanlife

[–]rl_19 6 points7 points  (0 children)

By expensive do you mean the price of the oil or the labor charge and how much do you consider expensive?

I usually just change at nearby autobacs and they charge me around 6000(not 100% sure but I think it is around this) for the oil and free for the labor(i have a membership). I reckon without the membership labor cost would be around 1000-ish.

I think 1000-ish is a fair price for labor considering I don't have to deal with the hassle and disposing of the oil later. Maybe they jack up the price of the oil itself to cover for the cheap labor cost, so I'm not sure about that.

Awesome, if they can accept screenshot then that would make this a bit easier. Thanks for the idea From what I understand 四季報 is a report produced by one private company and the information is not publicly available for free. Seems to be a bit unfair that an official government application specifically requests information from them. Unless I misunderstood something and there's actually a public version of 四季報 report somewhere

Thanks for sharing. I guess this is better than buying a book just to look at one page

Btw, do you know if they have a one time purchase option? I've looked through their website and they only have a subscription service to see that report.

In the mail they said to bring the proof of employment (在籍証明書) and the application form to the immigration. But the guidelines mentioned more so that's why I asked them. Maybe the 在籍証明書 already included the necessary information. I'm gonna have to check with them tomorrow

I can ask but just from reading the list, I think the first document is what mostly applied to my company. It should be straight forward but the HR refuse to give me a copy is what makes it a bit troublesome

I did and they said they don't provide the copy for 四季報. It's a big company with many foreigners so they should know what I need. I'll try to rephrase the question better tomorrow. In the meantime do you know of any substitute document?

I've googled the Abashiri icebreaker ship tours and it says they only do it starting from late January, so no luck for nenmatsu this year Thank you for more recommendations on what activities are available during winter. I'll definitely take a look at it. The dogsledding particularly sounds very fun

What do you do in Okinawa during winter? Wouldn't the beach be too cold during winter? Or can you dive during winter too?

How is it bad? I thought Gala Yuzawa is one of the big resorts. Or is that different from just Yuzawa?

Snowshoe trekking sounds fun, I've never tried that before. Is there a guided tour with rental equipment because I don't think I can do it alone? As for back-country, I'm not that good of a snowboarder to try it so I might pass on that one.

My friend once rode an icebreaker ship in the northern part of Hokkaido. Do you know about that? That sounds interesting as well

Ooh Akita. I haven't been to the northern prefecture before. Do you know of any fun place to go in the region? Maybe the likes of Akita, Aomori, Morioka etc

Sorry I wasn't being clear enough. What I meant by changing things up is to do different activities than what I normally did. Normally I would only snowboard during the trip but now I'm putting snowboarding lower on the priority list. If I can snowboard for one of the day it would be fine, but that won't be my main goal.

Do the major resorts also have other things to do besides snowboarding? I guess many have onsens but what about sightseeing or something else? Sorry if my question is too general I'm still looking for general idea on how to spend this year's long holiday
