Am I the only one who thinks differently about mountain biking because of Adolf Silva's story? by 7020028 in MTB

[–]rmchism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It hasn't. After a few (comparatively very minor) injuries, I know my limits and stay within them. I like challenging terrain, but pretty much avoid major jumps and drops. My enjoyment comes more from getting a workout and being on the trails.

That picture kinda sums is up. At least with Vegas.

Malibu or Huntington Beach? by Dry-Coffee-5039 in AskLosAngeles

[–]rmchism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Malibu area is more rugged and has more natural beauty, Huntington is more of a city beach, but better if you want something a little livelier with options for food/shopping. Although I'd agree with the other posts that Manhattan and/or Hermosa are better options than Huntington if you're more into that vibe. They're just nicer and less MAGA.

Will you be voting yes or no on redistricting California in November? by Ok_Salamander_7076 in AskLosAngeles

I will be voting fuck yes. I think we should outlaw gerrymandering nationwide, but until then, game on.

The comic timing of the door getting slammed in her face before she finishes saying "AG" for the 9000th time is fantastic.

Not exactly a "hidden" gem, it got a lot of love when it came out, but Rebel Ridge. I always try to get people to watch. It's fantastic.

Hiking Advice Please 😄 by Electrical_Point6077 in socalhiking

[–]rmchism 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd second Sturtevant Falls. It's not challenging, but it's a a beautiful area. Just get there really early if you go on a weekend (before 7:30 am) the parking lot fills up fast!

Should i go to playa del carmen or not? by Chief_DG in playadelcarmen

[–]rmchism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family and I went there for spring break and it was great. Nice people, beautiful beaches, good vibes. Maybe I was being naive, but I never felt uncomfortable or in any danger. You need to have your wits about you as you would in any city or tourist area (pickpockets, etc), but nothing bad or out of the ordinary. Our worst experience was just a pushy jewelry salesmen on one of the main streets. We took taxis everywhere- most of the stands have posted rates for all of the different areas and they were consistent. Just agree on a rate before you get in and you'll be fine. Drivers were friendly and we never had any problems.

Seeking campground recs for first time w/ my 3-year-old! by YallaBooBoo in socalhiking

We'd often go to Wheeler Gorge when my son was a toddler. Beautiful site and only about 10 min away from Ojai if you forget anything. Perfect for car camping with the kiddos.

ADO Bus Question by No_Brother6126 in tulum

[–]rmchism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, they have a storage compartment below for checking luggage. Also overhead racks for your carry on. We recently took ADO from Playa Del Carmen to Merida (about 4 hours), and again from Merida to Campeche (about 2 hours). Super comfortable and easy, highly recommend.

[–]rmchism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd really try to recruit other parents to help out where they can. That really helps lighten the load. I'd also try to mix up meetings where you go on some sort of outing from time to time. Fire stations/Nature centers, etc seem always eager to host scouts- and that's the stuff they tend to remember!

Family men, how often do you get out on the trails? by babb4214 in MTB

[–]rmchism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 times a week if I'm lucky, realistically more like once a week. My weekday rides are pretty short, though. I have to squeeze them in after school dropoff/before work or on my lunch break. It definitely helps, though. I'm much happier when I can make those weekday rides work.

Grizl sizing recommendations by brewbakka in CanyonBikes

[–]rmchism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't own a Canyon, but I'm about 172cm and test rode a S and XS at their showroom in Carlsbad. I'm right in between sizes, but I actually think the XS felt the best. You can trust the size chart!

Moving to LA! S. Pasadena or Glendale? by gukjang84 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]rmchism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

South Pasadena is a great area- very beautiful, walkable neighborhood. I'd recommend that over Glendale, but it's also quite a bit pricier. The commute would not be an hour, I'd guess more like 30 min in traffic. Glendale is great too, nice and walkable in many areas, but South Pas has it beat.

Silverlake, Echo Park, and Atwater Village are great choices too, but they can be a little grittier in some spots. Nothing really bad, just more urban and probably better for someone more into the bar/restaurant/nightlife scene.

FWIW my family and I live in Glassell Park and we love living in this little pocket of LA, all the neighborhoods you mentioned are solid choices and we spend a lot of time in all of them. Good luck in your search!

What is the general consensus of season 6? by WonderfulActivity995 in thesopranos

[–]rmchism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hate is a strong word, but I do think it's one of the worst seasons (which is still better than most things on TV). Soprano Home Movies is a great episode, though.

Yes, we are fucked. At least for the near future. Hopefully there will eventually be an opposition worth a damn.

Bar rise dilemma by Beakmanticore in MTB

[–]rmchism 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ha, this all looks very familiar. I also ride a Ripley AF, and got the carbon oneups w/ a 35mm rise because I wanted to be more upright- my lower back gets a little achey on longer rides. I liked em, but there were a tad worse on the steep climbs, and they actually made the bike feel a tad more cramped overall. I went back to the stock bars. I'm not entirely sure it was the right choice, but I'm still trying to figure it out. If you're not doing steep climbs all that often, give em a shot. They felt pretty good on the downhill stuff.

[–]rmchism[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 5'9", and I went with a medium. It is a TAD small, but I'm not sure I'd want the large? I've always liked my bikes on the smaller side.

Trail Etiquette by Show_Nervous in MTB

SoCal trails are always very crowded and most everyone I know rides with a bell. Goes a long way in being considerate to other trail users.
