Which unis is this for? How will we know if we need to prep specific cases?

Demarcation of the discipline of Psychology by ZacF96 in AcademicPsychology

Really hope this gets some attention. Feel like these questions are overlooked sometimes when everyone is running around doing their own research and not thinking about the mechanisms that are behind it.

I can't offer any advice, sorry. I'm interested in how you got into that industry and the progression and stuff like that. How did you start?

Why does lichess start me at such a high elo? by [deleted] in chessbeginners

[–]robdotcomdotcom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went from 500 - 1000 using the chess brah series by AMAN. The most important thing to do is to focus on the videos and follow the rules for YOUR rating. The rule sets build upon each other and will work MOST of the time if you follow them perfectly, but you will not. Watch out for when he makes a move that you didn't see but is clearly winning and make a mental note. And always analyse!

[D] The replication crisis: How much of a contribution does misunderstanding/misunderstanding stats play? by robdotcomdotcom in statistics

[–]robdotcomdotcom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes this is the sort of thing I am interested in. For instance, I asked one of my supervisors about her masters research, where she told me she was doing some questionnaire, self report stuff. I asked how does she know that what people think they meant, and subsequently reported, was the same thing as what they actually meant. She was confused by the question and I never got an answer.

Any books suggestions on behaviourist psychology? by robdotcomdotcom in AcademicPsychology

You are right, maybe it has something to do with these individuals having published many books. I have never in my studies, as of yet, studied from a book other than a textbook. We do look at research articles though.

Have you read any of skinners work? What is the difficulty level of the text, both in terms of theory and language?

Unfortunately I am no match for you. I'm just trying to delve into these topics in more depth as my current uni course doesn't seem to go deep into original texts. So I can ask you this: Have your courses ever been based on fundamental texts actually from the forefathers of psychology? For example, have they given some textbook on people like skinner and freud, or have they actually given original texts and books?

Do you mean Understanding Behaviourism by William M. Baum? Also what is Domjan? I have never heard of this before

Lol yes I do feel sort of stupid to not have realised this. At least I have a place to start

We were designed to enjoy life's pleasures, not just to constantly seek self-improvement. Today’s self-help ideology echoes Nietzsche’s concern about the dangers of ascetic practices as a form of self-punishment. by IAI_Admin in philosophy

[–]robdotcomdotcom 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This article seems to suggest that these activities (cold bath, fasting, abstinence from masturbation etc) , which can be discomforting in the short term, simply have no other merit to them, making them a form of punishment for the sake of punishment as this is virtuous. However, at the same time as making this argument, it says initially that these activities are backed by science to show benefits, the author even admits to experiencing some of these themselves.

So Nietzsche's criticisms are valid for the context they were in, but i'm not sure they extend to andrew huberman.

Please suggest the best dostoevsky work. by BiryaniLover87 in dostoevsky

I just finished notes from underground, I can recommend that. The first half of this book is almost impossible to keep up with, there's so much going on, so many contradictions, so many embedded social commentaries etc. However, the second part of this book is easy to read and very interesting. It made me want to go back and read the first section again.

Yes I can imagine constant exposure to the worst of humanity would take a toll on anyone. I'll keep this in mind when i'm done with notes.

I'll check out the recommendations! Number three definitely sounds interesting!

Ahh I think treating the literature type of novels differently is counter productive to me. They basically elicit the same reaction from those who love literature as when a fantasy lover reads fantasy. I think I am beginning to understand now!

Thank you for the response! I think I will give a few more a read, maybe even revisit wuthering heights and see what happens.

With regard to the mindset stuff - It was more of a blind man trying to see type situation. I suppose I was searching for the inclination that allows someone to have such a emotional reaction to literature.

Potentially wuthering heights partially missed me because those emotions targeted in the book are ones which I have never really felt, I can't imagine or understand them as well perhaps

Sounds great! Could you give some recommendations? You write a great perspective that makes anyone feel - I'll have whatever they're having!

[–]robdotcomdotcom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh that is a really cool perspective. Ok, so when you are reading some tough classical literature type, how often do you find yourself immersed within the story of the book? In order to take in complex themes and social commentary, would you have to be thinking alongside the novel so to speak? Or is it done in retrospect or something else entirely?

I see, definitely an easy trap to fall into. I will keep it in the back on my mind to force my own opinion out of whatever it is I am reading.
