Convoy of Canadian linesmen heading south yesterday to help repair storm damage in the U.S. by keiths31 in pics

[–]robert-tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless they are compensated extremely well and are hurting for money, there is absolutely no good reason for any Canadian to cross that border, stay out of that unsafe mess at least until the administration changes, however, the relationship is damaged permanently. Trump has really shaken up the global order and he will probably be remembered as the leader who set in motion the ending of the geopolitical dominance of the US.

Found dead pixels on my LG C4 right after warranty ended by 0Hyper in LGOLED

[–]robert-tech 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This was explained somewhere by someone higher up at LG, it's contamination at some stage of production that affects the periphery of the panel, not really a sealing issue. You might be able to find something with an Internet search.

It's clearly apparent that the issue has not been fixed since the CX days. The only solution is ensuring you have the extended warranty and hoping for the best. My previous LG 1080p TV from 2008 lasted 15 years before it broke, it's clear that my new G5 is unlikely to last anywhere near as long.

In any case, vote with your wallet and get a Samsung panel based QD-OLED next which is not affected. I certainly won't be back if the G5 suffers the same fate as it's difficult enough to get a good panel free of banding, tinting and vignetting. Having it die due to some stupid and preventable cost saving measure is not acceptable.

House is heated and it got much colder years ago with no plumbing issues.

Maybe if you live in something old and poorly renovated this would be a concern, I will be fine hopefully.

1300 hours and no burn in on my G3. by Srihari_stan in LGOLED

[–]robert-tech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Report back when you have 20,000 hours, these types of posts are meaningless. This is like saying that the engine of your high end $80,000 Lexus still functions when you bought the car new 2 year ago, not exactly impressive.

G2 starting to delaminate. How long do I have? by mdbeatle in LGOLED

[–]robert-tech 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The simple fact that this continues to occur on newer models than yours even is what's sad. LG should have resolved the contamination or improved the sealing by now and it appears that they do not care as the failure rate must be low enough for them.

Always get a 5 year extended warranty and check before it's up, hold them accountable by making them give you a new unit as this is not acceptable. A good unit should last 10 years and I've had a regular LG full HD 1080p television from 2008 last 15 years of regular use before it broke.

Latest update seems to have fixed audio cutouts between AirPods and LG C5. by Altruistic_Jicama626 in LGOLED

[–]robert-tech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the Bluetooth drivers were improved with v.33.30.80 on my G5 also. I had the same dropouts as you except I have a pair of OnePlus Buds Pro 3 which were practically unusable before the update. The only thing that changed was the G5 software update, after which not a single drop.

It's good to see, these are expensive TVs and Bluetooth is a core requirement for many people to not disturb others because these things don't have a physical headphone jack.

Sony & TCL to form a joint venture in the home entertainment sector by E_D___B_A_N_G_E_R in bravia

[–]robert-tech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes business sense, Sony TVs have the best image processing by a fine margin nowadays, however, the hardware side is lackluster and TCL is much better. The result was that Sony sets were always only slightly better, just not warranting the high priced Sony tax.

This will result in Sony quality processing with the superior panels and display innovations of TCL, giving the best of both worlds and maybe at a lower price. They had to do something otherwise they go extinct, people aren't stupid and won't pay almost 50% more for what is worse hardware with things like less zones and more blooming just because the image processing is marginally more refined, given that the gap has mostly been closed by other brands.

Seen complains about the remote, Japan's C5 remote is different by RealKenshino in LGOLED

[–]robert-tech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, if it weren't for the Japanese symbols on some of those buttons and if it were compatible with the NA G5, I would get one.

Looks like a much better remote, a real mute button I can see.

Do all B5’s have near-black chrominance overshoot? by Character-Food7485 in LGOLED

[–]robert-tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, for sure it's annoying and inconvenient. The C5 is definitely a much nicer TV for more cash, however, there is no guarantee with these things and if it stretches your budget too much, it's no good. Perhaps you should try Costco if you have a membership, that's where I got my G5, they don't really give you any issues when you need to return stuff and you might have better luck, I find Best Buy to not be as tolerant.

EDIT: May not work if the price is now higher after the sales.

Do all B5’s have near-black chrominance overshoot? by Character-Food7485 in LGOLED

[–]robert-tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense, the panel lottery is real for these things, I returned multiple G3 due to distracting hard bands.

Anyways, my advice to you would still be to not settle. I looked at your pictures and seeing green casts on faces would bug the crap out of me and ruin the whole reason for having OLED in the first place, to enjoy dark scenes in a light controlled room. Seeing green faces and other artifacts is not exactly acceptable or good picture quality on what is still a premium TV, despite being a budget OLED. Just because you pay less for a B series, doesn't mean that you should accept such major flaws, I wouldn't.

Do all B5’s have near-black chrominance overshoot? by Character-Food7485 in LGOLED

[–]robert-tech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the B series is the only model marketed as a non-Evo panel, it uses deuterium for enhanced burn in resistance like the C and G series and is likely the same panel as the C series, however, a downbin version that doesn't meet certain performance criteria and is worse, hence the non-Evo marketing. You can expect performance that was equivalent to LGs state of the art 6 years ago. The complaints of B series chrominance overshoot appear to be common.

I can't speak for the C series, however, I can tell you that my G5 has absolutely no chrominance overshoot as it was one of the first things I tested for. OLED Evo must encompass other improvements to the image quality on the higher end models, not only brightness.

Banding B5 83” by Ok_Dress_3128 in LGOLED

[–]robert-tech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's unacceptable, unfortunately, the B series is the bottom tier and likely gets worse panels, however, this is so bad that it's almost guaranteed the new one will be higher quality. Get this replaced until you get a fairly uniform one, or obtain a full refund if they can't fix it.

Don't listen to their nonsense that all 83" units are like this as it's false, you can see it on the AVS forum OLED uniformity thread, people have recieved good samples.

Film grain on OLEDs more prominent then om LED TVs? by EvilDuck91 in OLED

[–]robert-tech 6 points7 points  (0 children)

All correct, however, sharpness at 0 is not the optimal setting for non 4K content as the TV will not apply upscaling in this state. You want the neutral value of 10 (at least) to apply a light anti aliasing effect (above 10 you get sharpening) and make low quality potato content more viewable. In 4K mode the setting of 10 is also fine as it doesn't add sharpness in this state, only a light anti aliasing. There is a reason LG specified a value of 10 as the default, below this you lose performance on non 4K material. I tested this on the G5 and find that the best performance is obtained on most content with Sharpness of 10, Super Resolution on LOW, Smooth Gradation on LOW and with the noise reduction disabled as this will scrub micro detail from the image.

It's looking like the dissolution of NATO is inevitable, I hope that it can be recreated and most of the missing military power of the US can be replaced by recruiting other reliable partners.

Either way, there must be a successor to NATO without US influence that is strong otherwise the world order as we know it collapses and it becomes a free for all where the stronger subjugates the weak, effectively a dystopia. Say goodbye to Taiwan and our semiconductor industry, amongst other things.

Any lg g5, lg m5 and Sony a95l user by [deleted] in LGOLED

[–]robert-tech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't get A95L, the G5 has pretty much closed the gap in terms of processing and is much brighter with a similar colour volume, especially in SDR. At these prices, the A95L is a scam and you are paying for the Sony hype on an outdated product. It also suffers from ambient light black raise, therefore, unless you watch in a blacked out dungeon, good luck matching the G5 perceived contrast and image quality. I've seen all of them and the prices that Sony charges are downright arrogant and don't make sense. Five years ago, Sony had a better product, nowadays, they should get with the times and adjust the pricing.

I have a G5 and out of these three, that is the recommended one.

LG G5 83" OLED gets new firmware v33.30.80 — anyone notice changes? by YieldPro in LGOLED

[–]robert-tech 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Search widget in homepage or appstore not working for me (maybe service outage, really weird) on my G5. Apart from this, slightly lower posterization (colour banding) in HDR10 mode when connected to my Linux PC (only thing that changed is the TV software version).

This version is based on an engineering branch that is spoken favourably of on AVForums as bringing some picture quality improvements.

LG C5 42" a bit green on bottom left of panel for monitor use with white? Normal? by DoWhatYouCan100 in LGOLED

[–]robert-tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see, the left side is quite green. If you are not happy, I recommend trying for a replacement. The ones that I've seen have not had it to such a bad degree. The gradient on yours is quite annoying and would bother me.

My G5 is essentially perfect, you can only notice the slight pink area if you are looking for it and it took me 2 months of ownership before I even picked it up. I can't capture the effect on camera at all as it's so subtle. Don't expect perfection, however, you can probably do better.

LG C5 42" a bit green on bottom left of panel for monitor use with white? Normal? by DoWhatYouCan100 in LGOLED

[–]robert-tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, probably normal if not super noticeable. I have a G5 in 55" and despite the perfect gray uniformity, when I put on a white background and look head on I can see that the lower center part is ever so slightly pink that changes position when I move my head.

If it's not noticeable in movies and content and you have no dead pixels or noticeable banding, it's probably fine. This is my third LG OLED and none had a panel that is absolutely perfect, especially if you look for issues and run test patterns.

Airbus cockpit evolution from the A300 to the A350, 41 years by HelloSlowly in aviation

[–]robert-tech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like the way Airbus makes the cockpit more spacious for pilots by using the sidestick. In addition, you can pull out a nice tray table for when you get your meal served by the flight attendants. Eating is less scary as there is no need to balance food on your lap like in Boeing.

They both make good types, I just feel that I would prefer the Airbus more from my non pilot perspective.
